As we reported earlier today, CB Lito Sheppard (quad), CB Donald Strickland (ankle) and S Jim Leonhard (knee) did not practice this morning. Now it appears that both CB Darrelle Revis (hamstring) and S Kerry Rhodes (knee) were added to the injury report as well and limited in practice this morning. So, basically the entire Jets' secondary is now on the injury report (4 starters and the nickel back).

LB Jason Trusnik was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for games played the third week of the 2009 season (September 27-28). This is Trusnik’s first career Player of the Week Award. In the first quarter, he forced a fumble when he knocked the ball loose from Titans KR Ryan Mouton and recovered the ball at the Titans 19-yard line. The Jets scored five plays later to take a 14-0 lead. Through Week 3, Trusnik is tied for a team-high six tackles on special teams. The last Jet to win AFC Special Teams Player of the Week was RB/KR Leon Washington in 2008 (Week 11).

The undefeated New York Jets moved further up in power rankings this week, as two of three major sports websites now have them in the top 5. The Gang Green's position remained unchanged on FOX Sports where they are #5, just like last week. CBS Sports has them up to #5 from #6 a week ago. And only ESPN has the Jets outside of the top 5 - up to #6 from #8 a week ago.

For the third week in a row QB Mark Sanchez has been nominated for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week honors. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns in the Jets' 24-17 win over Tennessee, becoming the first rookie quarterback to start and win his team's first three games of a season in the past 40 years. The other finalists are QB Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions, WR Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings, RB Knowshon Moreno of the Denver Broncos and RB Donald Brown of the Indianapolis Colts.

The New York Jets defeated the Tennessee Titans, 24-17, and improved to 3-0, marking their best start since 2004 when the Gang Green began the season 5-0. Unlike in the previous two games, however, there were quite a few alarming signs that definitely should be addressed this week in preparation for the New Orleans Saints. While the Jets were clear winners against Houston and New England, let's be honest and admit that yesterday's game could have easily gone either way.
The New York Jets improved to 3-0 as they defeated the Tennessee Titans, 24-17, in what seemed like a roller coaster where the Gang Green made big plays when they needed them. The Jets are 3-0 for the first time since 2004 when they started the season 5-0 under head coach Herman Edwards.

The New York Jets will play their first AFL legacy game this season, as they take on the Tennessee Titans tomorrow in Giants Stadium. Both teams will be wearing their original AFL franchise uniforms of 1960. Tennessee leads regular season series between the teams, 21-16-1. Interestingly, the Titans of New York (the original name of the Jets) never beat the Houston Oilers (the original name of the Titans) - they lost all 6 games to the Oilers in 1960-1962.

For the second week in a row QB Mark Sanchez was named the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week. Sanchez completed 14 of 22 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown in the Jets' 16-9 win over the AFC East rival New England Patriots. He also won this award for his debut performance against the Houston Texans in Week 1.
The New York Jets injury report keeps filling up, as the team now has 14 players on the list. Both CB Lito Sheppard and CB Donald Strickland did not practice again this morning. Neither player has practiced this week at all. Strickland has been basically ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans, while it looks like the availability of Sheppard will be a game time decision. Even if Sheppard plays, it's doubtful that he'll be able to start and play on most downs. CB Dwight Lowery, who started 10 games in his rookie season last year, would start and CB Drew Coleman would play the nickel.

LB Keith Bulluck of the Tennessee Titans apparently took some lessons on trash talking from Jets players and guaranteed a victory against the Jets on Sunday. "We're definitely getting back after it," Bulluck told reporters. "We’re going against a rookie quarterback. We plan on showing him a bunch of different looks and to take what Kerry Rhodes said last week, we want to knock their quarterback around. We're not a team that’s desperate. We’re a team that knows how to win. And we’re a team that plans on going to New York this week and getting a win, our first win."

Last Sunday QB Mark Sanchez became only the fourth quarterback in the past 40 years to win his first two starts of a season, and the second in as many years (QB Joe Flacco of Baltimore did it last season). With a win on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, Sanchez would become the first rookie quarterback to start and win his team’s first three games of a season.

As a clear indication that availability of CB Lito Sheppard and CB Donald Strickland for Sunday's game against the Titans is a question mark, the New York Jets activated CB Marquice Cole from the practice squad and waived TE Matthew Mulligan from the 53-man roster. Both Sheppard and Strickland suffered inuries in the game against the Patriots. Lito Sheppard had a strained quad, while Strickland tweaked his right ankle. Their statuses for Sunday's game are uncertain at this time.

The first week of the 2009 NFL season is over and the early betting lines for Week 2 are out. The New England Patriots are favored over the New York Jets by 5 points in what is going to be the first real test of Rex Ryan's team. Both teams won in Week 1, which means the winner of this contest will take the lead in AFC East. NT Kris Jenkins has already stated that the Gang Green are "going to be playing this game like it's the Super Bowl." Head coach Rex Ryan, meanwhile, stated that the Pats have the advantage at quarterback and head coach, but it remains to be seen who has the better team. Rex also challenged Jets fans to show up at the Meadowlands and do their part.

MLB David Harris has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for games played on NFL Kickoff 2009 Weekend (September 10, 13-14). He registered a team-high 12 tackles, one sack and one pass defended in a 24-7 road win against the Houston Texans. Harris helped limit the Texans’ offense to 183 total yards (145 passing yards, 38 rushing yards), as the Jets' defense did not allow an offensive touchdown for the first time since November 9, 2008 against the St. Louis Rams. In his third year from Michigan, this is Harris’ first career Player of the Week Award. The last Jets linebacker to be named AFC Defensive Player of the Week was LB Eric Barton in 2004 (Week 15).

"I think so. Who do we have to beat?" was Rex Ryan's answer on ESPN 1050 when asked if the New York Jets were an elite team. The Jets are 2-0 after beating the New England Patriots on Sunday and suddenly on the radar of all media "experts", most of whom predicted the Gang Green to finish last in AFC East. Ryan did not stop there, however, as he added that the Jets won the Super Bowl in his dad's first year as a coach in New York, and so maybe the Gang Green just needed a Ryan on their coaching staff to return to Super Bowl glory.

Rex Ryan's heralded defense and rookie QB Mark Sanchez both made their debuts yesterday against the Houston Texans and both passed the first test. The new aggressive defense was able to completely shut down the Texans' offense that was ranked 3rd in the league last season. Mark Sanchez, meanwhile, did not play like a rookie at all. The 22-year old kid from USC showed great pocket awareness and composure. He was especially effective on third downs, and his ability to buy time with his feet is another thing that we haven't seen from a Jets quarterback in quite some time.

This was truly a game of two totally different halves, as the New York Jets' offense came out with a vengeance in the second half and scored 13 unanswered points. This was a pretty rough half for rookie QB Mark Sanchez, as he was sacked and fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. The second possession wasn't any better - this time it was RB Leon Washington who fumbled the ball, giving the Patriots possession on the Jets' 17-yard line. Although replays showed that Washington was down before the ball came out, the officials ruled this a fumble.

The Rex Ryan/Mark Sanchez era has begun with a stunning display on both defense and offense, as the Gang Green dominated the Houston Texans, 24-7. QB Mark Sanchez, who finished the game 18 of 31, 272 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, became the first Jets' rookie quarterback to win a game since Richard Todd did it in 1976. The New York Jets will open their season tomorrow when they take on the Houston Texans, a team that hasn't had a winning season in their seven years in the NFL. The Texans, however, finished 8-8 in both of the last two seasons and are projected to finally have a breakthrough season with a possible playoff berth. The Jets go into the game as 5-point underdogs, as they will face a formidable opponent who has won their last 3 home games and is 12-4 in home games over the last two seasons. Last season the Texans were ranked 3rd in total offense (4th in passing, 4th in rushing).
With less than 48 hours left until the season opener, the Jets currently have 6 players on their injured list. DE Mike DeVito is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. He's been limited in practice the last two days. QB Kellen Clemens (elbow), RB Shonn Greene (ribs), LB Bryan Thomas (ankle), WR Wallace Wright (knee) are all listed as probable and have fully participated in practice sessions this week. TE Dustin Keller was added to the injury list with a toe problem, but practiced and should be ready to go on Sunday. Also, if you follow Keller's updates on twitter (or the feed we have on this website), he is going to the Yankee game tonight (if the rain stops) along with QB Mark Sanchez and S Kerry Rhodes. So, apparently his toe is not bothering him that much.

It now appears that former Jets' QB Brett Favre was advised to continue to play by the Jets despite a torn biceps in his throwing shoulder last season. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum confirmed this morning that the team knew about Favre's condition and did not put him on the injury report, which is a clear violation of the league rules. In the past, teams have been fined anywhere between $10K to $25K for not reporting all injuries, but the amount of the fine depends on the violation, and could exceed that range. No team has ever lost a draft pick for violating the injury report guidelines.

Mark Sanchez will become the first Jets rookie quarterback to start since Matt Robinson started on November 13, 1977 against the Seattle Seahawks. The New York Jets defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the final preseason game of the year, 38-27. The starters played only one series and while the offense impressed with a touchdown drive, the defense clearly struggled as they gave up six points. QB Mark Sanchez was a perfect 5 of 5 for 67 yards and a touchdown to WR Jerricho Cotchery. Keep in mind though that this was against a "vanilla" defense, which wasn't as aggressive as if this was a regular season game.
Tonight the New York Jets will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the final preseason game of the season. The starters are expected to play just one series, leaving plenty of time for the players battling for the remaining roster spots. As head coach Rex Ryan said the other day, there are still about half dozen roster spots up for grabs, and tonight's game is basically the final chance for backups to claim them.

The New York Jets filled an obvious void today, as they signed TE Ben Hartsock to back up TE Dustin Keller. Hartsock, 6'4", 264 lbs, is a 6-year veteran who has played for Indianapolis, Tennessee and Atlanta. He has started in 26 games in his career (56 games total) and caught 27 passes for 273 yards. Hartsock was released yesterday by the Falcons and the Jets were among at least 6 teams interested in his services. He signed a 1-year deal worth $1.275M and will be used primarily as a blocker. The Gang Green waived P Glenn Pakulak to fit Hartsock on their 75-man roster.
According to head coach Rex Ryan, there are about six spots still up for grabs on the projected 53-man roster that every NFL team must finalize by 4 PM EST this Saturday. The Jets currently have 75 players on their roster and will have to cut 20 of them to comply with the league's rules (the Jets will be allowed to carry two players over the limit due to the upcoming suspensions for LB Calvin Pace and DE Shaun Ellis). Once these cuts are finalized, the Gang Green will be able to put 8 players on their practice squad.
