WR Laveranues Coles was released by the Jets earlier today and it looks like his career is pretty much over. By not putting him on the opening-day roster, the Gang Green will avoid having to pay his entire base salary -- $855,000. They can re-sign him and pay him on a game-to-game basis -- $50,294. Coles, however, does not need the money and will most likely retire. From the day he re-signed with the Jets, a few days before training camp, Coles made it clear this was going to be his last stop. The Jets trimmed their roster to 75 players, and Coles, in his third stint with the team, was one of the victims.
Over 10,000 fans gathered at Hofstra University earlier today to watch the Jets in their only appearance at their former practice home. Although the Gang Green players did not have their pads on, the fans still got to see some tackling, as a seemingly drunken fan ran onto the field and got taken down by security guards.

All Pro C Nick Mangold has reportedly reached an agreement to sign a 7-year contract extension worth $55M. The amount of guaranteed money was still being negotiated but is expected to be more than the $20M Rams C Jason Brown received last year.
According to various sources, the New York Jets are close to extending the contract of C Nick Mangold, who is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, centers in the NFL. The new deal will likely will make Mangold the highest-paid center in the league.
