Jets Player Release

Wilkerson fined 10K, Jets cut Gilyard

Admin - September 9, 2011

Rookie DE Muhammad Wilkerson was fined $10K for his fight with Giants RB Brandon Jacobs during the teams' preseason game last month. Jacobs was hit with a $20K fine, as this wasn't his first offense. Both players were ejected after shoving at each other in the second half of the Jets' 17-3 win on Aug. 29. Wilkerson, 21, will start for the Jets in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the Gang Green cut WR Mardy Gilyard whom they recently claimed off waivers. He will be replaced on the 53-man roster by CB Isaiah Trufant who's being elevated from the practice squad.

Also, it appears that the Jets were indeed interested in S Brandon Merriweather, who was released by the Patriots. The Gang Green offered him a 1-year deal worth $1.2M. Merriweather declined and signed with the Bears who offered $3.2M, which included a $1.2M signing bonus.
