Jets Stay Put In Power Rankings After Beating Buffalo

posted by: Site Admin | 0 comments | Power Rankings

The New York Jets remained exactly where they were a week ago in power rankings of all three major sports websites. ESPN kept the Gang Green at #15, while both FOX Sports and CBS Sports had them at #16. There's no surprise here as the last quarter win against the struggling Bills barely impressed anyone. Now the Jets will have to work really hard to make it back to the top 10, where they were just a few weeks ago.

According to various reports, the New York Jets released S Emanuel Cook earlier today. S Tracy Wilson will be elevated from practice squad to take Cook's place on the active roster. Cook was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and released before the start of the 2009 season. He was then briefly signed in 2010 and released again. Later that year Cook was re-signed by the Jets to a 3-year deal following the injury to safety S Jim Leonhard. Cook received no signing bonus, so his release won't cost the Jets anything in the future.

Jets Stay Alive In Playoff Race As Sanchez Throws 4 TDs

QB Mark Sanchez threw a career-high four touchdown passes, including the winning score to WR Santonio Holmes, as he overcame his second quarter interception and led the Gang Green to a 28-24 comeback win against the Buffalo Bills. Sanchez might have been erratic at times, throwing into double and triple coverage, but when the game was on the line, he pulled himself together and orchestrated a 12-play game-winning drive that went for 77 yards. This was surely a morale booster for the Jets' signal caller that hopefully will help the Gang Green turn this season around, as they pretty much have to win all of their remaining games.

The Playoffs Start Now For 5-5 Jets

After wins against the Dolphins, Chargers and Bills the Jets were on the verge of taking over the AFC East. However, instead of taking over the AFC East the Jets turned out two lackluster performances in a row bringing them to 5-5 and on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008. In order to avoid missing the playoffs this season the Jets will need to embark on an extraordinary run to close out the 2011 season.

Although Rex Ryan stated that he considered listing Tomlinson as "doubtful", as it looks rather unlikely that he will play tomorrow. Kerley will be a game-time decision. Tomlinson suffered his injury late in the Patriots game. He did not make the trip to Denver for last week's game.

All three top sports websites are pretty much in agreement this week - the New York Jets are a middle of the pack team whose playoff hopes are on life support. ESPN lowered the Jets' ranking by one spot, from #14 to #15. Fox Sports, who had them the highest #11 a week ago, now has the Gang Green at #16. CBS Sports also has the Jets at #16 (one spot down compared to a week ago).

Well, this game looked like a sure win on paper, but in a typical "same old Jets" fashion the Gang Green imploded losing for the second time in five days and putting their playoff hopes in serious doubt. Just five days ago everyone was talking about taking over the AFC East and having a home playoff game. Now, the question is whether this Jets team makes the playoffs at all or it's time to rebuild again.

ESPN lowered the Gang Green's ranking by 3 points (from #11 to #14). FOX Sports had them down by only 2 points (from #9 to #11). Finally, CBS Sports moved the Jets down by 4 points (from #11 to #15).

We've been through this many times before, we've believed in this many times before and the Jets have failed just like this many times before. They did it again last night when in a must win game against the hated Patriots, they just failed to perform up to the level needed to be competitive. In the game that was expected to result in the shift of power in the AFC East, the crowned champ simply demolished the contender. Contrary to last week, when the Gang Green performed admirably against the Bills in every aspect of the game, this time they made crucial mistakes everywhere they could - offense, defense and special teams.

Harris registered his second interception of the season and the fourth of his career when he picked off QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter at the Jets’ 49-yard line. In his fifth season from Michigan, this is Harris’ second career Defensive Player of the Week Award. Harris previously won the award in 2009 (Week 1). He joins CB Antonio Cromartie (Week 2) and CB Darrelle Revis (Week 6) as the third Jet to win Defensive Player of the Week this season.

Going into the game against the Bills as 2.5-point underdogs, the Gang Green left their opponents absolutely no chances, totally dominating the contest from start to finish.
