The reaction of New York Jets fans in late April may have not been the most positive in lieu of taking two more defensive players. The most interesting part of Rex's most recent draft as the New York Jets head coach came when they took a defensive lineman with their second 1st round selection, marking the third years in a row that they have taken a defensive lineman in the first round.

Early Struggles Could Lead to Results for Geno, Jets

The Geno Smith lead New York Jets barely lost to the New England Patriots for the fifth straight time in the past two and a quarter seasons. The game had to have been one of the sloppiest offensive games in recent memories in which the Jets totaled 15 first downs, and Tom Brady's offense only 9.

Before the start of regular season ESPN placed the Jets at the rock bottom of their power rankings - the Gang Green's lowest position since we began tracking power rankings on TheGangGreen.com. The win against the Bucs in the season opener prompted ESPN "experts" to move the Jets 5 spots up to #27. CBS Sports reacted similarly, as they moved the Gang Green from #30 to #26. CNN SI seemed to have been impressed even more, slotting the Jets at #23 (up from #30). Pro Football Talk has the Jets at #28. FOX Sports kept Rex Ryan's team at #30, unchanged from the week before.

Sanchez might be out for season

QB Mark Sanchez does have a labral tear in his right shoulder that could require a season-ending surgery. Sanchez sought a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews who confirmed the earlier diagnosis on Wednesday. Sanchez could instead choose to rehab the shoulder in an effort to play at some point this season, but still likely would need surgery at the end of the year. He's expected to make this decision within a day or two.

Run defense helps Jets win season opener

It's been a while since the New York Jets started a season with expectations being so low. Most experts predicted the Gang Green would win 5-6 games at most; some went as far as anticipating a 3-13 season. The Jets went into the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as 3-point underdogs. Not a single "expert" on the entire ESPN panel picked the Gang Green to win this one. The Jets, however, had different ideas, as a solid showing from rookie QB Geno Smith, tremendous play from the young defensive line, and a few dumb mistakes from their opponent ensured that the Jets started a season with a win for the fourth time during Rex Ryan's era.

Geno Smith to start season opener

Although most of us have expected it, the New York Jets made it official this morning - QB Geno Smith will start in the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The last time the Gang Green started a rookie quarterback in Week 1 was 2009, when it was QB Mark Sanchez, whom Smith is replacing. Despite failing his final test in the preseason game against the Giants, Smith will start because Sanchez is unable to go due to the shoulder injury he suffered in the same game.
