Jekyll & Hyde Jets Return In Disappointing Loss to Bengals

The New York Jets return to their on and off performances by laying an egg against the Bengals en route to a 40 point loss. Whilst Geno Smith and the offense didn't look particularly sharp early on, the usually stout Jets defense got completely picked apart by third year pro Andy Dalton. It seems as though anyone watching the game had blinked and the Jets were immediately down by 14 points. Two pick six's by rookie quarterback Geno Smith doesn't help their case for a win at all either.

The Gang Green were due to lose last Sunday, considering their pattern of winning and losing games this season. Hardly anyone, however, expected the Jets to get blown out the way they did against the Bengals. Surprisingly, this embarrassing loss did not have much effect in some of this week's power rankings. ESPN placed Rex Ryan's team at #16, which is just one spot below their last week ranking. FOX Sports and CNN SI both lowered the Gang Green's stock by 2 points - from #14 to #16 and from #12 to #14 respectively. CBS Sports wasn't as merciful, putting the Jets at #17, down 4 spots from last week. Finally, Pro Football Talk has the Jets at #18, which is 5 spots down compared to last week.

A mood of complacency filled Metlife Stadium as offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg settled for 3 straight runs to set the Jets up with a 56 yard field goal attempt in overtime to beat the long time rival Patriots. Everyone and their mother seemed to know that Nick Folk would go on to miss the field goal, which he did, although an unsportsmanlike penalty flag was thrown on Patriots defender Chris Jones for pushing his opponent into the line, a newfound flag this year that was called for the first time on Sunday.

Beating the Patriots always make a team look good and the Gang Green's win against Tom Brady and Co. was no exception. Following their overtime win on Sunday, the Jets' stock got a major boost in all five power rankings. ESPN, FOX Sports and CBS Sports all moved Rex Ryan's team five spots up. ESPN now has them at #15 (#20 last week), FOX Sports moved them up to #14 (#19 last week) and CBS Sports now has them at #13 (#18 last week). ProFootballTalk and CNN SI went even further, as they raised the Gang Green's position in their rankings by a whooping seven spots. While the run defense continues to be stifling, the New York Jets continue their inconsistency in the 2013 season with an ugly loss versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team who always seems to have the Jets number. It's generally accepted that when a defense holds the opposing offense to 19 points, they generally should be able to generate enough offense to overcome that margin and grab the victory.

The most commonly used statements used when discussing the New York Jets home game in Atlanta was the fact that the Jets simply did not have enough talent to compete with the Falcons. Matt Ryan and his high powered offense were quote on quote "too desperate" to lose this game, being 1-3 and down several games to the streaking New Orleans Saints in the divisional race.

According to a report on ESPN.com, Sanchez underwent surgery late Tuesday to repair a torn labrum, effectively ending his season. This is also pretty much the end of Sanchez's career with the Jets, as he will count $13.1M against the salary cap next season. The Gang Green are expected to cut him before his $2M roster bonus kicks in next March.

The Jets needed a boost following their blowout loss against the Tennessee Titans and they got from their rookie QB Geno Smith who played a mistake free game, leading the Gang Green to a 30-28 win against the Atlanta Falcons. For the first time in his five-game NFL career Smith did not turn the ball over, which was the key against Atlanta's high-powered air attack. Smith's confidence spread around the team. The defense, which is ranked #1 in the league after this game, finally came up with a turnover. Special teams that had hardly provided any help before this game finally did a good job on the returns. And then PK Nick Folk just continued being the team's folk hero, kicking the winning field goal as time expired.

The New York Jets are expected to sign WR David Nelson, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, to replace injured WR Santonio Holmes. Holmes suffered a hamstring injury in the last game against the Tennessee Titans and is going to miss at least a few weeks. WR Stephen Hill sustained a concussion and his status is uncertain at this time. So, the Gang Green might be without both starting wide outs going into the next game against the Atlanta Falcons, which made signing Nelson a necessity.
