Jets stock crashes down in power rankings

The Gang Green's stock that's been floating in the top 20 throughout the entire rollercoaster season finally came crashing down. The loss against the Baltimore Ravens seemed to have finally made all experts realize that the 2013 New York Jets just weren't good enough to make the playoffs. ESPN placed the Jets at #22  (down from #16 last week). CBS Sports agreed, putting the Gang Green at #22 as well (down from #15). ProFootballTalk had them at #21 (down from #16). CNN SI lowered the Jets' stock by 7 spots, from #18 to #25. Only FOX Sports kept Rex Ryan's team in the top 20, putting them at #20 (down from #15).

This might come as a surprise but the debacle in Buffalo did not have that much effect on the Gang Green's position in power rankings. Apparently, the pundits expect Rex Ryan's team to bounce right back up in the following week, just like they have throughout the season. ESPN lowered the Jets' position by 4 spots, from #12 to #16. FOX Sports placed the Jets at #15, down 3 spots from a week ago. ProFootballTalk was the harshest, moving the Gang Green 5 positions down, from #11 to #16. CBS Sports, on the other hand, was the most forgiving one - from #14 to #15. CNN SI failed to produce their power rankings this week again.

Jets bolster secondary by adding Ed Reed

If there's one weak unit on the impressive Jets' defense this year, it's the secondary. The Gang Green are ranked only 24th against the pass, giving up over 250 yards per game through the air. So, it should come as no surprise that the Gang Green could not pass up on the opportunity to add S Ed Reed who was released by the Houston Texans earlier this week.

Rex Ryan predicted a loss during the bye week but it now looks like he got it all wrong, as the New York Jets climbed even higher in power rankings. Four out of five websites placed Rex Ryan's team higher in their power rankings than in the previous week. Both ESPN and Fox Sports moved the Gang Green up from #14 to #12, which is the highest they have been this season. ProFootballTalk put the Jets at #11, up from #14 last week. CNN SI placed them at #13, up from #14. Only CBS Sports kept the Gang Green's rankings unchanged - #14, just like a week ago.

For the first time since we started tracking power rankings here on TheGangGreen.com, all websites are in agreement, as they all placed the Gang Green at #14. The Jets moved two spots up from #16 in ESPN's rankings. FOX Sports followed the suit, also moving Rex Ryan's team two spots up from #16. CBS moved the Jets three spots up, and finally ProFootballTalk, who ranked the Jets at the lowest #18 last week, moved them four positions up. CNN SI decided not to produce their power rankings this week.

Jets Defense Carries Team Against High Powered Saints

The Jets defense did everything in their power to ensure that the team did not lose to Drew Brees and his high powered Saints offense. Brees faced constant pressure from the Jets front four which wreaked havoc in the backfield despite only two total sacks on the day. Young guns Quinton Coples, Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison lead the charge with help from veteran outside linebacker Calvin Pace to throw in six quarterback hits to go along with their couple of sacks.

PK Nick Folk, who has not missed a field goal attempt all season, was named the AFC's Special Teams Player of the Week. He converted all four of his field goal tries, from 39, 21, 47 and 45 yards, during Sunday's win against the New Orleans Saints. Folk also had four kickoff touchbacks. This is the second time Folk wins the AFC Special Teams award this season. He also won it after hitting the game-winning field goal to defeat the Bucs on opening day.
