Jets stay afloat despite losing to Packers

Admin - September 18, 2014

The latest editions of the NFL power rankings have the Jets remain pretty much where they were a week ago. The loss to the Packers seems to have only solidified the Gang Green's position around #20. ESPN and CNN SI decided to keep the Jets right where they were a week ago - at #21 and #19 respectively. FOX Sports had them one spot lower, from #20 to #21. CBS Sports and PFT reacted more aggressively, dropping the Jets by three and four spots. Finally, Yahoo Sports rather unexpectedly raised the Gang Green's stock to #14, four places up compared to a week ago.

Here's what the power rankings websites had to say about the Jets:

ESPN: Some combination of Sheldon Richardson and Marty Mornhinweg called a timeout that shouldn't have been allowed and nullified a game-tying touchdown. Just another day at the office for the Jets.

FOX Sports: Geno Smith and the offense continued to show signs of improvement, but they failed to alter their offensive game plan in the second half and the Packers adjusted. This game escalated into a shootout and the Jets' secondary was exposed.

CBS Sports: The Packers game was a perfect example of what they will get this season: a little of the good Geno Smith with some of the bad.

ProFootballTalk: An ill-timed timeout has helped obscure the fact that the Jets blew a huge lead.

CNN SI: There are cheery, upbeat "only" hypotheticals like "Only Peyton Manning could throw that many touchdown passes" or "Only my grandmother could make soup taste that delicious." And then there is the other side of the spectrum, which now includes such gems as "Only the Jets could lose a game-tying touchdown because the offensive coordinator told a defensive lineman to call timeout."

Yahoo Sports: Yeah, they lost, but they showed plenty in that game. If Geno Smith keeps progressing they'll be in the playoff hunt. (Though, their "move up" is more due to other teams that were ahead of them dropping.)
