Power rankings: Jets lose again but stay put in rankings

Admin - December 19, 2017

The Gang Green fell to 5-9 after losing in New Orleans but they fought hard, keeping the game close until the very end. Their hard fought effort was clearly reflected in the latest edition of power rankings. Pretty much all sites that we're tracking kept the Jets' position unchanged compared to the week before. ESPN moved them 3 spots up from #28 to #25. The Sporting News moved them down from #22 to #24. CBS Sports also moved them 2 spots down, from #25 to #27. ProFootballTalk put Bowles' team at #21, just like in the prior week. Finally, Yahoo Sports moved the Jets 1 spot down, from #24 to #25.

The recent misfortunes on the football field made the Jets a 7-point underdog against the LA Chargers. Nevertheless it could be an intriguing contest, as QB Bryce Petty might very well improve in the last two weeks of the season. Here's what the power rankings websites had to say about the Jets:

ESPN: Forte's two career Pro Bowls might seem low for a player who recorded at least 1,000 scrimmage yards in his first nine NFL seasons. He's unlikely to reach that mark again this year, though. He'll need 352 yards over the final two games to reach 1,000 again.

Sporting News: You have to admire the fight they've shown with Todd Bowles, but the talent limitiations keep holding them back, especially witih Josh McCown no longer healthy enough to lead them.

CBS Sports: The season is done as they play Bryce Petty at quarterback for the injured Josh McCown. At least they competed at New Orleans.

ProFootballTalk: With a few right moves, the Jets could be a contender. Eventually.

Yahoo Sports: Nobody would have thought twice had the Jets laid down against the Saints, especially with Bryce Petty at quarterback. Instead, they were in the game most of the time. A late touchdown by Mark Ingram made the final score 31-19, but the game was a lot close throughout. That matters, especially when you realize that the players are still playing very hard for coach Todd Bowles.
