The New York Jets made several roster moves this morning, as they brought back LB Aaron Maybin and placed OL Robert Turner, TE Jeff Cumberland on injured reserve, ending their seasons. The team also elevated TE Josh Baker from the practice squad to replace Cumberland.

The New York Jets are reportedly expected to sign LB Aaron Maybin, a former #11 overall draft pick by the Buffalo Bills who failed to record a single sack in his two seasons in the NFL. Maybin was cut Monday after two awful seasons that made him one of the biggest draft busts in recent years. Former Jets LB Vernon Gholston, of course, is an even bigger bust, as he was drafted at #6 overall and did not record a sack in 3 seasons in the NFL.

After a couple of days of deliberating between the Jets, Titans and Ravens, WR Derrick Mason chose to sign with the Gang Green. Mason, 37, who hasn't missed a game since 2002, will join WR Santonio Holmes and WR Plaxico Burress as the team's top 3 wide receivers. He was cut last week by the Ravens who wanted him back at a reduced price, but Mason decided to join Rex Ryan whom he knows since their days in Baltimore.

The New York Jets signed free agent WR Derrick Mason who was released last week by the Baltimore Ravens. Mason, 37, caught 61 passes for 802 yards and 7 touchdowns last season. In order to free up a roster spot for Mason, the Gang Green released WR Jerricho Cotchery. Cotchery, 29, spent his entire career with the Jets. Last season was the worst one of his 8-year career, as he was plagued by injuries and caught just 41 passes for 433 yards, 2 TDs. Cotchery started this training camp on the PUP list, as he was still recovering from offseason surgery.

The New York Jets re-signed another member of last year's secondary - S Brodney Pool, who started in 12 regular games last season and in all 3 playoff games. Last year Pool, 27, registered 53 tackles (39 solo), 1 sack, 1 interception and defended 11 passes. The Dallas Cowboys showed late interest in Pool, which may have motivated the Jets to get a deal done. So, the Gang Green quickly signed him to a 1-year deal. Pool got off to a slow start last season as he learned a new system, but he improved late in the year.

According to DE Shaun Ellis' agent, the Jets have offered Ellis a 1-year deal for veteran's minimum $910K. Ellis, 34, has spent his entire career with the Jets after being drafted in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He missed only 6 games in 11 seasons, registering 343 tackles, 72.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and 1 interception. Ellis' agent indicated that his client is currently weighing his options but would like nothing more than to end his career as a New York Jet.

Earlier today the New York Jets finally re-signed CB Antonio Cromartie whom they acquired last season from the San Diego Chargers. Cromartie, 27, will sign a 4-year contract worth $32M. Last season Cromartie registered 42 tackles (41 solo), defended 17 passes and intercepted 2. As we all know, the Jets wanted to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha but the latter chose to join the Eagles, so the Jets had to settle for Cromartie instead.

The New York Jets signed WR Plaxico Burress who spent last two years in jail and hasn't played since 2008. It's a 1-year deal worth $3,017,000. Burress will turn 34 next month and it's a big question whether he can regain his form of 2007 when he scored 12 touchdowns for the Giants. This obviously means that WR Braylon Edwards will not be back with the Gang Green.

The New York Jets signed CB Donald Strickland to a 1-year deal. Strickland played for the Gang Green in 2009, registering 26 tackles (22 solo), 2 pass defenses, 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble. Last season Strickland played for the Chargers who released him 2 days ago. Strickland, however, is no more than just a role player. So, the Jets still need a starter at CB, which means that they will still try to re-sign CB Antonio Cromartie or trade for CB Asante Samuel of the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to several reports, S Eric Smith has agreed to terms on a 3-year deal with the New York Jets. Keeping Smith was very important for the Jets who already failed to secure the services of CB Nnamdi Asomugha and lost WR/KR Brad Smith, a very important special team player for the Gang Green. Special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff reached out to Eric Smith several times since the free-agency negotiating period opened.

According to a report on the NFL Network, the New York Jets are out of the race to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha. So, it looks like the 3-day saga is finally over and the Gang Green can move on to address their other needs. There's still an unresolved situation with the other starting wide receiver. The Jets could also upgrade their linebackers and defensive line. One player, especially a cornerback, no matter how good he is, will not win a championship. It would also be pretty stupid to have 20% of the entire salary cap space tied up to two cornerbacks.

Another day of free agency is almost over but there's still no decision from CB Nnamdi Asomugha whom the New York Jets are desperately trying to sign. Their patience seems to be getting pretty thin though. According to SNY, the Gang Green asked Asomugha to make his decision tonight.

According to various sources, WR/KR Brad Smith, who played an essential role in the Jets' wildcat offense, is going to sign a contract with the Buffalo Bills. The Jets did make a late offer to Smith, but the Bills reportedly offered more in guaranteed money.

It looks like it's the Jets vs. the Texans in the battle to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha. There are several reports that Houston is going all-out to land the top prize of this year's free agency. They are offering Asomugha a contract with an average of $12-14M a year, which is more than the Jets are paying CB Darrelle Revis. The Gang Green are about $10M under the salary cap and it might be problematic to match or beat Houston's offer.

Earlier today we reported that the Jets made an offer to OT Damien Woody to come back for at least one more season. Hunter, 30, started at right tackle in the playoffs after Woody went down with an injury and performed admirably.

The New York Jets have reportedly contacted OT Damien Woody, hoping to bring him back. Woody, who earlier stated that he would play either for the Gang Green or retire, suffered a torn achilles tendon in the playoffs against the Colts. He was then placed on injured reserve and later released. The Jets don't currently have a replacement for Woody, so bringing him back would be essential for the Jets O-line to remain one of the best in the league.

According to various sources, the New York Jets placed highest-level tenders (1st and 3rd rounders) on WR Santonio Holmes and CB Antonio Cromartie. While the moves temporarily secure the players' rights, it's unclear what their status will be under a new CBA. The current CBA expires Thursday night. If unrestricted free agency reverts to four years if and when a new CBA is reached, these tenders would be moot. But with the agreement set to expire, and no new labor deal yet in place, teams have to cover their bases.

Last season Coles had only 43 receptions (his lowest output since rookie season) for 514 yards, 5 TDs.
Having lost all faith in QB Kellen Clemens' ability to be a solid backup to QB Mark Sanchez, the New York Jets signed QB Mark Brunell, a 39-year veteran who spent his best years with the Jaguars and the Redskins.
