Weeb Ewbank had a player exercise his option for the first time ever as Verlon Biggs, DE, signed with Washington. The Redskins sent two draft choices as compensation.

Namath Injured Again

August 7, 1971
For the second time in as many seasons, Joe Namath was forced out of the lineup. This time he was hurt in first preseason game trying to make a tackle on a fumble runback and underwent surgery on his left knee immediately.

Namath Returns

November 28, 1971
Joe Namath, on the sidelines for 19 straight regular season games, made his return in the second quarter against San Francisco and tossed for 358 yards and three TD passes, but the Jets fell to the 49ers, 24-21.
