Michaels Named New Head Coach

January 5, 1977
Veteran defensive coach Walt Michaels was named head coach signing a three-year contract. Leon Hess was named acting president.

Jets Waive Namath

May 12, 1977
Joe Namath, symbol of the Jets for 12 years, was granted his freedom as he was placed on waivers when a special trade attempt with Los Angeles was unsuccessful (April 1, became final April 12). Namath signed as free agent with Rams.

Jets Win Early Access to Shea

May 26, 1977
After a two-month court struggle the Jets were guaranteed two September games in Shea Stadium one on either the first or second date of the NFL season plus two games in October. The agreement was for each of the remaining six years of the Jets lease with the city beginning in 1978. State Supreme Court Justice Harold Baer also allowed the Jets to play two preseason games plus their 1977 home opener at Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands.

Kensil Named President

June 6, 1977
Jim Kensil, executive director of the NFL since 1968, was named president and chief operating officer of the Jets. Leon Hess, who had served as acting president became chairman of the board and chief executive officer for corporate matters.

Ward Resigns

December 30, 1977
Al Ward, Jets general manager since 1975, resigned.
