Freeman McNeil has the second best game in playoff history (202 yards rushing) and Darrol Ray sets a postseason record with a 98-yard interception for a TD as the Jets upset the Bengals 44-17 in Cincinnati to mark their first playoff win in 14 years.
Jets Advance to the AFC Championship Game

Aided by two Lance Mehl interceptions in the final three minutes, the Jets advance to the AFC championship game after defeating the Raiders 17-14 in L.A.
Jets Lose to Miami
January 23, 1983
On an extremely muddy field at Miami's Orange Bowl, the Jets and Dolphins waged a defensive battle which ended with Miami on top, 14-0. A.J. Duhe was the hero of the game that saw 12 turnovers with three interceptions, including a 35-yard return for the insurance TD.
Coaching Change

After six seasons as head coach Walt Michaels announces his retirement. The next day offensive coordinator Joe Walton is named head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Gardi is promoted to asst. head coach.
Jets Move
October 6, 1983
Citing Shea Stadium as "rundown, neglected and the NFL's poorest facility for athletes and spectators alike," the Jets announced their plans to move to the Meadowlands for the 1984 season. The Jets pledged to return to New York City if a first-class professional stadium is ready for occupancy starting in 1989 under a lease equitable to the city and the Jets.

Marvin Powell is voted to the Pro Bowl for the fifth straight year while NFL sack leader Mark Gastineau and Joe Klecko are also chosen. Lance Mehl becomes the first defensive player since 1971 to be picked MVP by his teammates.
McNeil Leads NFL

Freeman McNeil becomes the first Jet to lead the NFL in rushing as he finishes with 786 yards on 151 carries (5.2 avg.).
