Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine announced that LB Jamaal Westerman will replace LB Garrett McIntyre as the starting outside linebacker in the base defense. The battle for this position has been going on since LB Bryan Thomas was lost for the season in Week 4. Westerman started in Week 6 against the Dolphins but then lost the job to LB Josh Mauga who started in Week 7. McIntyre started in the last three games.

All-Pro C Nick Mangold suffered a stinger during yeseterday's practice session and is day-to-day. He said he expected to play in preseason opener against the Texans on Monday. During the live, goal-line portion of practice, Mangold fell to the ground after a play in which RB Shonn Greene dove over the top of the pile. According to the latest reports, the Jets have restructured the contracts of LB Calvin Pace, OG Brandon Moore, LB Bart Scott and RB LaDainian Tomlinson. We don't know the numbers yet, but the main purpose of these moves is definitely to create more salary cap room to sign CB Nnamdi Asomugha. It also seems like the Dallas Cowboys have emerged as the new contestant for Asomugha's services.
OT Damien Woody, who had arthroscopic knee surgery in December and missed the last three games of regular season, has been placed on injured reserve. Woody suffered an Achilles injury and will undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon, according to head coach Rex Ryan. OT Wayne Hunter started in place of Woody and did a pretty good job. He's also expected to start on Sunday against the Patriots.
