NFL Profiles: New York Jets

Admin - December 20, 2021

If you live in New York, then you are really spoiled for choice when it comes to sporting teams. You have the Knicks, the Nets, the Jets, the Yankees, the Rangers, and many, many more.

The city of New York even has two NFL teams - the Giants and the Jets. This happened when the NFL and the AFL merged to become the NFL we know now. The Buffalo Bills are also based in the State of New York.

With so many New York teams, you probably need a little refresher on each of them (unless you are from New York). Today we are going to be looking at the football team - the New York Jets. Will be evaluating the team, their coaches, their previous performances, and their chances of winning the Super Bowl this season.

Their performance last season

The 2020 season was the 61st season that the New York Jets competed in and they gave one of their worst performances.

The Jets ended their season with a 2-15 record, they didn't make it into the playoffs and they did not win any trophies. They were at the bottom of the AFC East table, and second from the bottom of the table for the whole AFC.

The only teams the Jets beat last season were the Browns and the LA Rams. Many were worried that the Jets were going to become the third team ever to lose every game in the season. At one point they were 0-13 for the season.

Their performance this season so far

The Jets are not having a much better season in 2021. While fans have returned to the stadiums, the Jets' win-loss ratio has not improved.

The Jets currently sit on 3-11 for the season, with three games left in the regular season. Only the Texans and the Jaguars have a worse record than them in the AFC. As well as the Lions in the NFC. Even the New York Giants are having a better season than the Jets.

New York Jets - Head Coach

At the end of the 2020 season, the Jets got rid of their head coach and brought in Robert Saleh.

Saleh has been on the coaching staff for many NFL teams (most notably the Seahawks in 2013 when they won the Super Bowl) and was most recently at the 49ers. His role with the Jets is his first head coach role.

Saleh was the first-ever Muslim head coach in the NFL and the 4th Arabic-American head coach in the league. He is also good friends with Matt LaFleur (head coach at the Packers) and was the best man at his wedding.

New York Jets - Quarterback

The starting quarterback for the New York Jets last season was Sam Darnold, who was traded in the offseason to the Carolina Panthers. The Jets subsequently drafted Zach Wilson with their second overall draft selection. Wilson, who had no competition in training camp, easily won the starting job.

When Wilson suffered a PCL injury, which sidelined him for several weeks, the Jets had no choice but bring back QB Joe Flacco from the Eagles. Last season Flacco served as Darnold's backup and started in four games for the Gang Green.

Flacco played in two games replacing injured Wilson. He threw for 338 yards and 3 TD passes.

Best Player in 2021

Rookie wide receiver Elijah Moore was having a pretty impressive season before getting injured in Week 14. He leads all Jets receivers with 43 receptions for 538 yards and 5 touchdowns, in addition to 54 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Moore was placed on injured reserve last week, but we might still see him again before this season is over.

Chances of winning Super Bowl LVI

Sadly, for the New York Jets, there is no chance of them making it into the postseason playoffs this year. There are only a few games left this season and the Jets are at rock bottom of the AFC East, once again looking at a top 5 draft position next year.

One of their remaining games is against the Jacksonville Jaguars, one of the few teams with less wins than the Jets - if you want to put money on the Jets to win this, you can find New York Jets betting odds here.

The Jets haven't made the playoffs since 2010 when they reached the AFC Championship Game where they lost to the Steelers.
