I don't understand this view. Can someone explain it to me? If we beat the Dolphins, we'd be 5-1 in the division and 2-0 against the Dolphins, so clearly the Dolphins wouldn't deserve to be in the playoffs over us. If the Pats lose to the Bills, the Pats would be 3-3 in the division and choked in a divisional game where the other team isn't playing for anything. So why wouldn't we "deserve" to win the division and be in the playoffs in that situation, like who deserves it over us then?
My understanding talent wise the Jets have put a good team on the field. A string of 5 wins with two crucial road wins against the Pats and Titans made all of us dream a little of where we could be going. However it was all built on shifting sands and we blew chunks against lesser teams in the following weekd. Backing into the play offs just means a quck and humiliating exit. Momentum is needed to keep a play off run going and we haven't got this. Did I mention the injuries the Pats have had and the relative lack of talent of the Fins. To further illustarte my point, remeber the opening weeks of the season when they Bills were hot. Look what happnes when you lose back to babk to back. You fade
if the Dolphins lose to us, they lost to a 10 win team, nothing to be ashamed of. if the Pats lose to the Bills, regardless of how they've played until now, they still got close despite losing Tom Brady. again, nothing to be ashamed of. if the Jets don't make the playoffs, despite leading the division by essentially two games with 5 to go (with tie breakers), and not a single team that will end up above .500 in the last four games before the final game, the Jets managed to lose 3 out of 4 and play themselves out of the playoffs. winning the final game, regardless of whether the Jets make the playoffs or not, doesn't change this, and a team that finishes the season like that hardly "deserves" it in the emotional sense. this isn't a team coming on strong to make the playoffs with a few breaks, this is a team that choked away a division well in their control against weaker foes and now need breaks to get in. even if those breaks fall their way, you can't ignore everything that occurred up to that point, and say they deserve to be in. if the Jets get in, they are fortunate, not deserving. teams that deserve to be in the playoffs play their way in, don't just back in because another team couldn't seal the deal on the final day of the season. I judge the Jets on the merits of their own performance. so, if they win this week but miss the playoffs, they don't deserve to be in because of the other games they've blown. so, winning this week doesn't make them deserving to be in the playoffs, so if by some grace of god the two teams they need to lose actually do and they win, again, the same applies and doesn't mean they deserve it absolutely. they just get to make it by default as far as I'm concerned.
If you can't grab one win against these teams.. Seattle, S.F., Oakland, Denver, San Diego ..you don't deserve to go to the playoffs.
It's not that we "don't deserve it" if they get in they get in, but they need help, that's not the way you ideally want it to go. The fact that they have totally blown the last 4 weeks against losing teams is also not a good sign, I mean even if they get in, they won't win a playoff game playing like they have been.
49ers, Seahawks. Fuck the West Coast problem... these teams are beaten by attacking their new QBs. We don't attack QBs, thats a pussy defense. Pussies don't play in January. I don't care what team you are or who I root for. You play soft, go fuck yourself. Thats my philosophy.
If they get in, by definition they deserve it. Whether or not they look like a playoff team is another story.
Well when we controlled our own destiny, we blew it BAD. To get in by default still counts but isn't quite the same.
just because you get something doesn't necessarily mean you deserve it, especially when there are arbitrary tie breakers that are differentiating identical records. the Jets 10-6 record will simply conform to the rules more so than other 10-6 records, that doesn't reflect any absolute definition of deserving it.
They will have won more of the games predetermined by the league tie-breakers to be more important than the others than the other 10-6 teams. It doesn't matter when you win those games or how you win them so long as you win more than the other teams trying to get in the playoffs.
Ask yourself this question: What's the point of going to the playoff? Going to the playoff for the sake of going to the playoff will allow you to settle for mediocrity. And this team will have a humiliating and quick exit come week 1 of the playoff. Is that REALLY what you want?
If by some miracle they can turn things around and start playing like the team we saw around week 11 or 12 they could do damage. Personally I remain hopeful that they can somehow do that, as unlikely as it may be.
If we beat the Dolphins then yes I agree we deserve to be in over them (whether or not we would still even get in remains to be seen) but we were 8-3 and are now 9-6 losing to teams like Seattle and San Fran. Thats unacceptable.
if making the playoffs absolutely equates to deserving it than missing the playoffs absolutely means a team does not, so beating Miami and not making the playoffs cannot make the Jets deserving of it. your position is hypocritical.
it's still arbitrary, just as arbitrary as a coin flip. by your argument, if the rules stated that flipping a coin would determine which team makes the playoff, than that would make a team more deserving than an other based on one of the most random and arbitrary acts known to man. that hardly sits well with my sense of reason and idea of something that is deserving.
It's not random at all. You have to go out and win the games that are pre-determined to be more important. I will concede that the wildcard option where the tie-breaker would be conference record is arbitrary and less meaningful when discussing who is more deserving. The division tie-breaker would be division record though. I'm not giving on that one. Those are generally the most difficult games to win as you're playing teams that know you inside and out from playing so frequently and they're also the teams you're directly fighting for the divisional title.
We don't deserve to be in the playoffs because the Pats aren't lossing to the Bills. We got in the playoffs in 02 when Dave Wanstadt did what Dick Juron did a couple of weeks ago against us. Took the ball out of the running backs hands with the lead and the clock in his favor and put the game on his QB who quickly gave the ball back. BB isn't going to do that. The Pats are going to be ready and are going to play well. Buffalo might get lucky but do you really think so? How much more can go right for us this year?
We "don't deserve the playoffs" because we played imperfect football, something playoff teams don't do. I don't get it...many of us brag about how many years they've been playing and watching football yet, yet teams having up and down seasons and maybe sliding into the playoffs is something that blows you away? Maybe if we had just won the Super Bowl last year. It almost seems like some of you expected nothing less than a Super Bowl this year.
