My take: 1) Last season ends 4-12, Jets front office and coaches look at team personnel, including QB. FO and Coaches privately agree that Pennington is not "the guy" they want, but they are hampered by a lack of viable Free Agents and lack of Elite QB prospects available AT/AFTER the #5 Pick. Bottom Line of these discussions...Mangini did not back Chad and gave the front office the green light to keep an eye out for something better. Also, Mangini's QB of the future (Clemens) is not showing enough to give hope for the immediate future. Tanny not likely to suggest that drafting KC was a mistake, the coaches are not taking advantage of his potential, and so the anti-Mangini sentiment begins. 2) Jets draft Gholston based on their evaluation system. Mangini along with Tannenbaum and other staff believe they can change him from a DE to a 3-4 outside linebacker. Mangini signs on with the the FO that Gholston is "their guy" at the #5 pick. Bottom Line of this decision ... Gholston is a disaster his first year and even worse he shows NO PROGRESSION under Mangini's coaching staff. Mangini does not deliver. Tanny spins it to Woody...the guy is super-talented, he is not being properly used/coached. 3) Jets FO sees opportunity to bring in a veteran QB that could be an upgrade to Chad and sell lots of Jerseys...Brett Favre. Mangini didn't think Chad was the guy, but this was not what he had in mind for his team in 2008. Favre, his talent and ego come to camp and turn Mangini's world upside down. The team quickly becomes Favre's team and Woody gets a woody for Brett, especially after that 6 TD performance. Mangini is already done and he doesn't even know it yet. Brett had already been taking shots at Mangini by this point and has the ear of Tanny and Woody, thus Woody's comments about "this was being decided through the course of the season". Bottom Line on the Brett Favre Trade ... Mangini should have been careful what he wished for, if Pennington was here, Eric may still have the job one more year to "develop" a future QB. 4) The stars aligned to crush Mangini. Jets get 7 pro-bowlers including the man who is starting at QB and is not fond of him as a head coach. Tannenbaum gets off the hot seat when his FA pickups, Jenkins, Favre and Faneca all make the Pro-bowl. Woody "hearts" Tanny and Woody "hearts" Brett. That leaves Eric to take the fall by himself. 5) Mangini loses the team because of Favre. Favre wants special treatment like in Green Bay. Mangini is forced to go against what he has been "selling" for the past 3 years and accomodate Brett the Jet. Coles, T.Jones, Rhodes and other Jet Locker room leaders get pissed. They see the coach getting his shoes pissed on and the respect is lost. 6) The Wheels fall off the Green Bus. Shottenheimer sees the writing on the wall. Bretts in, Erics out. The offense gets a quick Brett-friendly overhall, the leash comes off Brett, as Brett had always planned. TJ gets pissed, but its too late...its Brett's team. At this point Eric stands on the sideline without any support and we read his lips as he stands defeated saying "Why would he do that?" to another insane interception. He knows at that point he has absolutely no control over his QB or his team for that matter. At this point Mangini is a coaching disaster...completely distracted and sensing the heat from above. 7) Tannenbaum doesn't want to give Woody too much time to think. He has already been priming Mangini as the fall guy, but after the Miami game he knows he could end up on the outside as well. He still has Woodys ear and urges a quick strike at Mangini so they can "begin a detailed search"...Bottom Line... Mangini is gone, Tannenbaum successfully stays off the hot seat. 8) Here we are now... Tanny is scrambling. He's got make this search look good, but the most important thing is keeping his job. He cant bring in a legend who would show him for the accountant he really is...gotta be someone willing to play his game...a new, young genius who wont be able to pull a Favre and get Woodys ear. If he could sell Shotty that would be ideal for him. He already knows he can control Shotty and shotty has no where else to go. Tuff sell. If only he can get a Shotty from another team. That will be our new coach. 9) As for Favre...Woody has a love affair with this guy, its hard to predict what he will do as far as playing, but mark it down, he will serve in some capacity for the NY Jets this year and he and Woody will be BFFs. Be careful Tanny, he may be running football operations in a year or two. 10) Jets fans..well, we're along for the ride as usual. This looks like its gonna be a bumpy one (also as usual). So basically in my theory, Tanny is the main player. Positioning himself to keep his position at the right hand of Woody by throwing Mangini to the wolves. Mangini is the guy who let himself get painted into a corner, so shame on him and Woody is the greedy bastard that has know idea what he is doing with the Billion dollar franchise that he is running into the ground.
just curious, why hasnt anyone (not just the Jets) considered the Eagles' Jim Johnson as a head coach? All I ever hear about is how great he is but I have never heard his name come up in any discussion over the years
In this version the Zapruder film shows Shotty holding a playsheet with 3 of the plays titled "Favre Interception".
Mario Williams had a bad first year but now he's one of the elite defensive players in the league. The same could become of Vernon. Who knows what would happen if we picked Jerrod Mayo and the Pats picked Vernon Gholston.
He was the sixth pick who could not get in the game at years end on obvious pass rushing situations on a team with no pass rush. If it smells like a bust it's a BUST!!!!!
At least Mario Williams showed flashes of brilliance, whether it was in the regular season, pre-season w/e. Gholston has done NOTHING and the small amounts of playing time he has gotten he's looked clueless
this isnt a conspiracy theory...but just a chain of events....however its a very good account of the chain of events....really good post... and this post further shows why mangini should not be coaching this team...its the coaches job to keep his players in check and keep control of his team....he lost the team and as a result this is what happened....mangini simply wasnt cut out for it...
If Mario Williams farted and accidently shit his pants he would've accomplished more than Vernon did this year...
by not farting and accientally shitting his pants Mario Williams still accomplished more.... by simply identifying himself as an active player to the security guard at the players gate outside the stadium for 16 games Mario Williams accomplished more than Vernon Gholston did in his rookie year....
Its not widely known that some NY crime families, mindful of the 16 point spread, kidnapped Earl Morral's wife just prior to kickoff and let him know that it would be, um, unfortunate, if he played well against the heavy underdog Jets in SBIII.
1) Joe Namath and the Jets sign a deal with the devil to win Superbowl III. The devils payback you ask? He now owns the fate of the Jets for the rest of there existence. He uses this for entertainment by toying with the hopes and dreams of fans and allowing there hopes to build before crashing them down to the ground. This is commonly referred to by jets fans as "same old Jets" but it's actually the devils handy work. 2) At the age of 9, a young Brett Favre while on a family vacation in Las Vegas was abducted by aliens. After extensive probing and testing, one of the aliens actually took over Favre's body before sending it back to earth. This is how Favre was able to become the NFL "iron man". 3) Favre is traded to the Jets and experiences early struggles before discovering the devil is actually meddling with the Jets' success. No mortal man could ever actually discover this however; as an alien Favre can actually see and fight the devil. 4) To the devils suprise, Favre is able to fight off the devil in to the point where he can no longer meddle with the Jets' fate. The Jets go on a 5 game win streak as Favre continues to fight off the devil in addition to handling his normal duties for the Jets. 5) Being the supernatural being that the devil is, he finally realizes that the only way to defeat the alien (Favre) is to go to the alien source and discover how to extract him from Favre's body. The devil travels to the distant, unknown planet of Toddenagletoniverty and finds the information required to extract the alien from Favre. 6) Prior to the Broncos game the devil performs an alien exorcist on Favre's body forever rendering him a normal mortal man. The devil regains control of the Jets' fate and forever imprisons the alien devoid of all alien powers to be a fan at all home Jets games. The alien was actually caught on film during the Bills game and its picture is actually shown in my avatar.
I can't believe the number of people dismissing your post. It makes perfect sense to me. (Then again, most posters just found one more reason to dismiss it!) This doesn't read like "conspiracy theory" t me, it sounds more like a history of what just happened (that is--IF you read the local newspapers). The only part that's missing is Mangini's meltdown. That's the missing ingredient that could make this past season a TV movie on ESPN. Got to love following the jets. We got more drama than ten TV soap operas.
I don't think Tannenbaum wanted to fire Mangini at any point in the process. I think Woody made that decision and made it clear that Mangini was going and then Tannenbaum signed on. All Cowher had to do was say "I'll come run the show but Tannenbaum has to go" and Tannenbaum would be out the door right now. Tannenbaum's best hope to be the Jet's GM for any period of time was for Mangini to survive the offseason and recover and take the Jets to the playoffs next year. As it is Tannenbaum is a walking dead man who will get pushed out the door (or to a quiet office in the building somewhere doing nothing of value) within a year or two unless this coaching hire is a slam-bang success.
