I think they are beyond sold on Ryan, so Gruden's availability is moot. Plus with the bad news coming out of Tampa, Gruden may be sitting for a year. I'm a Guden fan too
Yeah, I guess so. But I still think you interview the guy (or I should say, contact him and OFFER him an interview). I have nothing against Ryan and he sounds like an interestig choice. But Gruden is young (a year younger than Rex), smart, and has a super bowl championship under his belt. He at least should get an interview. If they inerviewed Billick and reached out to both Holmgren and Shannahan, they are fools to not try and interview Gruden as well. If they are totally sold on Rex then Gruden's interview probably won't sway them. But you always keep for ears open. They have plenty of time to pick a coach, the playoffs are still in progress.
Getting Ryan and Peppers would be the smartest thing Johnson could do if he really wants to sell PSL's. Too bad he is a moron...can't wait for him to sell the team and stick to band-aids.
^ no cap space for peppers, why make him adjust to a brand new system of defence in the middle of his career.
Because that's what he wants to do. He has said he wants to play 3-4 OLB. He'll probably end up in Miami with all the cap space they have. This is one player I'd be happy to throw all the FA money into if Tanny can work the cap magic.
Good point with the cap space. Favre is really dicking us over. But if Peppers wants to play in the system I feel that it would be a sin to give up a guy like that.
If the Jets cut Coles, Thomas, Barret and Favre retires, I think thats about 26 million off the books (I don't have a source other than my vague recollections of their original contracts)
Coles won't save any money. We're stuck with his 7 million regardless. We're -8million as of now, but Favre, Barret, Baker and some restructures of other guys could put us in a position to get Peppers. I don't think it's out of the question in terms of getting the cap space for him.
How is Favre dicking us over? The Jets made the trade for him knowing his salary cap implications and retirement decision, and also told him not to even think about football for 4 weeks.
Gruden is poorly regarded by players and his reputation has eroded to such a degree that the Jets would have been fools to even interview him. If you examine Gruden's career leading up to 2002, on the surface, at least, it looks pretty good. When the Bucs won the Superbowl, most of the players attributed the victory to the work of Dungy and Kiffin. His performance since 2002 has been an unqualified abortion. In 2003 the Bucs went 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs. 2004 was even worse at 5-11. 2005 they finished 11-5 and first in the division only to lose to the Redskins in their first playoff game since 2002. 2006 they were a craptastic 4-12. 2007 they rebounded with a 9-7 record but lost to the Giants. 2008 they started the season 9-3 and Gruden completely lost his team as they went into a spiral of 4 straight losses to end the season, the last one to the Raiders at home. The Bucs needed to win just one game down the stretch to make the playoffs but could not get it done. He was hated by his players and hated by the fans as a thundering little runt of a dictator who was duplicitous and unfair with many of his players and not very well respected. In the past six years he has only managed to make the playoffs twice and failed to win a single game. Like Billick, he was supposed to be an offensive specialist but failed to generate any real efficacy on offense and relied more on the team's defensive strengths. Rex is the real deal. He's passionate, intelligent and he has the love, trust and respect of his players. He's a Jets fan from way back and its a forgone conclusion that he will be our new HC.
Well yeah, if they renegotiate the contract they can save cap space. I haven't heard anything about Coles wanting to do that though. Why would he want to give up $7 million guaranteed at this point in his career? Yup. Check out this site, it's real nice. http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary09.html
