I'm hoping Rex sees the writing on the wall and goes a different route with the QB situation. I've bolded the two options I think Rex should investigate further...what do you guys think?
It would take a parting of the red sea for either Clemens or Ratliff to be the starting QB this season. Or Johnson deciding to hold off on PSLs for another year which may happen anyway.
I can't see Favre coming back.....so what's the alternative in your opinion....trade up in the draft? I'm not on the Leftwich,D.Anderson or K.Collins bandwagon....
I think looking at other FAs or maybe trying to make a trade. There are no good options really. I think that is the ONLY reason they are trying to coax Favre back. Even going so far as to try and convince Schottenheimer to stay. I doubt anybody really wants him.
I must say unless we hear something very much to the contrary sometime soon, it looks more and more with every passing day that Favre will not be back.
well if the Jets move up for sanchez... it would make sense to me, that ratliff or clemens QB's this year. I dont want to go get sanchez, personally I dont like him, but some of our better draft experts do. I also think it would be better served to draft defense in the first round this year, that way Ryan and our new DC (pettine?) will be able to build the defense they want most.
that's my take on it as well. And after reading that article...i'm not enamored with the alternatives either. Which is why i think the Jets should look at two alternatives: 1) let Ratliff/Clemens battle it out in TC....both know the offense...if Schotty stays, then there's no loss in continuity. and 2) We scour the draft for a franchise QB. I like this idea if Schotty ends up leaving...because we'll start fresh with a new scheme with a new QB. I don't want to go through the same thing last year when we were losing games because Favre didn't pick up the offense till week 6 (if that).
There is an excellent chance Sanchez will fall to the Jets if they stay where they are. There aren't any QB hungry teams above them other than Detroit who will pick first and take Stafford. Maybe KC but I doubt they take him.
The only problem with waiting until 2010 to draft a blue chip Qb is that we'd need to crash and burn to have a high enough DP to be in the hunt for one. We might have missed the boat on franchise QB's at least for the short term so I like the Ratliff/Clemens/X QB TC competition option. Remember that Sanchez, while he has the tools, came out early.
If the Jets somehow luck out and either Stafford or Sanchez are available then you draft them without thinking twice. Unfortunately that is very unlikely to be the case and both will most likely be long gone y the time the Jets are on the board. In that case it ecomes a foregone conclusion that Clemens and Ratliff battle it out with a vet brought in as insurance.
HOw can the Jets possibly do that when 650 tickets in the coaches club with PSLs attached were already sold with an average PSL of about 21k. Are they supposed to refund any money paid and say..."Forget about the PSL"?
At this point I just want to see what we have, and maybe draft another one for good measure. I've had my fill of Journeyman leftovers... aside from Vinnie, none of them have done a whole lot for us. Time to stop grabbing for band-aids and do this the old fashioned way.
What other option is there other than the Draft or Leftwich? If they don't find it there then it is Ratliff or Clemens Time.
Well, I don't want it to sound like I think that it's a done deal he won't be back. In fact the logic of Schott's staying, if you want to call it that, is that it signals to Favre that the O and the playbook will not be changed much. But that has nothing to do with Favre's condition and desire. Imo each day that goes by has to be seen as an indication that the outcome of a thought process leading to him coming back is increasingly in doubt. I understand all those who want certainty going forward, who believe Favre showed he fell short of what the Jets needed, who want to move on to the next phase, and not relieve another season like 08. But I think for the reasons you point to we also have to be fair, somewhat!, to the new CS and FO. What are their real options if Favre does not come back? As we can see from the discussions here, none seem particularly compelling.
That's the Favre game plan in full operation. Spend a month or two lulling the media and fans (and team) to sleep with talk about making a decision a month out (but leaning towards not coming back). Then suddenly announce that you're pretty sure you're not coming back (about two weeks before the draft). A couple of days before the draft let your agent circulate a rumor that you're still not certain about playing in 2009. Regardless of what the team actually does in the draft the rumors that you're considering playing will continue to build until June 1st as you sit out all the mini-camps and other team activities in the interim. June 1st - I'M BACK!!!! All timed to get the most "me-exposure" possible for Brett. The team winds up bending over backwards to pay him 13 million dollars at 40... LOL.
I do believe Brett Favre will be back. He's a competitor, and he will want to make right what went wrong last season. And it's New York. I think he's back for Brett part 2, and I truly hope so. If he's not, bring in Ray Lewis!
Or Tony Siragusa. Tony's only a year older than Favre and he was great at clogging the middle in the Raven's defenses a few years ago.
You do realize that the new heqd coach was only named two days ago, who is OC is still in doubt, and in the press conference this morning RR said he hasn't had a chance to even talked to Favre yet? Under these circumstances I would be astonished if Favre had said something, not that he hasn't. No matter what he said (stay or go) it would not reflect well on Ryan. The obviously wise thing to do here for all concerned is to let things settle down a little, then start talking, then make a decision. Since RR said he hasn't had a chance to talk to Favre yet, we're obviously still in stage 1.
I think I'm in a minority here, but I think that the Jets have the talent to be a Super Bowl contender right now, if they can just add 1 or 2 key pieces. Terrible coaching and QB play were all that stopped them from being the second best team in the AFC this year...for that reason I don't think it makes sense to give the keys to the offense to Clemens or Ratliff. Yeah, the Ravens and Falcons won this year with inexperienced QBs but there's no reason to expect that either of our guys can play mistake free football like that. If Ryan has the stones to break Favre's consecutive games played streak then I think that Brett is still the best option. Otherwise I think they should look into second tier guys like Leftwich or Simms, if for no other reason than to make one of the young guys absolutely earn the job in preseason.
