Raitliff looked great coming off the bench for Utah at the end of his junior year, but had lots of problems his senior year. News articles of the time (google is your friend) suggest frequent poor judgment and dumb interceptions. Translation: there are reasons he was not drafted, you know. 32 teams of NFL scouts are not gonna completely miss a strong QB prospect with no question marks around him. And he has not had the opportunity to remove the question marks. He may be able to, but he has not done it.
Curt Warner was once bagging Groceries because he was missed. In two weeks he goes for his second Super Bowl ring. Tom Brady slipped to the sixth or seventh round. S**t happens.
Clemens has a better chance at being a starter for 10 years and winning 3 Super Bowls than Drew liking me again it seems.
I think that if we don't draft Mark Sanchez, then Kellen Clemens will be our starting QB next season. Just look at the way Baltimore works. Strong defense that is built on pressure and causing turnovers. All they need is a game-managing QB, not someone who will be outstanding and throw 30 TD's. I think Clemens will be a solid NFL QB and can be perfect for the system Rex Ryan will try to run. Edit: And anybody saying Clemens "got his chance" is a moron. I hope they're joking. It's amazing that Clemens beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore last year with this team. He absolutely deserves another chance.
I predict that Clemens will be cut during pre-season and not one other team will pick him up. I think he's that bad. It would be suicide for the Jets to name him the starting qb, given his terrible play. Anyway, Favre will probably be back and the Jets will probably draft someone to sit for a year or so. And if Ratliff has another solid pre-season, look for him to be Favre's back-up. But I don't think Clemens will be around for long. If he does well, I'll write my apology to him here, but I just don't think he will. I think he's gone from the NFL very soon.
There is a warm, safe place for all former Jets QB's in the NFL. Brooks Bollinger found a job, Ray Lucas found a job, etc.
You either are or you aren't in the NFL and Kellen Clemens is the later. He had his shot to show what he can do and didn't make the most of it. I kind of relate him to Glen Foley a bit. Lots of hype and anticiaption of greatness, only to get totally fooled and dissappointed. I've seen enough, lets go in another direction.
How can you honestly say that? Ridiculous. He played a few games with an awful O-line and running game. Unless we're going to draft Mark Sanchez, there's no reason to give Kellen Clemens another shot.
From the Times January 22, 2009 Talk With Favre Tops New Coach’s Agenda By GREG BISHOP FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Among Rex Ryan’s first tasks as the Jets’ coach will be speaking with Brett Favre. At his news conference Wednesday, Ryan spoke of Favre in reverential tones. He said Favre gave him whiplash when he played for Green Bay, moving the Packers up and down the field against the Baltimore defense that Ryan coached. “I know the kind of talent he has and the type of competitor he is,” Ryan said. “I would think anybody would want him as their quarterback.” Ryan gave no timetable for a decision by Favre, who has spoken of the Jets in the past tense since the season ended.
Favre is certainly the best choice for the team right now. I understand that we didn't make the playoffs and that sucks, but it was fun watching Favre. Sure he threw a lot of INTs, but I loved the fact that he was putting up the ball. It was fun to watch. I really hope he stays, for many reasons.
Don't lose track of the prize here. It's still a question of who will help sell the most PSLs this year and believe me when I say it's not Clemens. Why do you think they are willing to basically give Favre all the time he wants to make his decision?
Absolutely correct! Favre is an attraction. Not just for Jets fans, but for football fans in general. It's not everyday that you get the chance to have one of the best players ever play for your team. Green Bay was blessed with that for so many years. And on the other side of the ball, the Ravens had that with Ray Lewis. Hoping he too ends his career with us
Somebody on ESPN made a point of that yesterday. They said if Favre comes back and they somehow get Ray Lewis then the Jets would have arguably the greatest field generals of all time on both sides of the ball plaing on the same team.
It's also the same thing for Wayne Gretzky with the Rangers. He wasn't great at the end of his career, but he was Wayne Gretzky, an attraction. It's not always about winning. Sometimes it's about entertainment too.
I think its gonna be Clemens next season. If we are running the ball most of the time then we could plug anyone at qb. Clemens showed signs of greatness at times in 07. I feel like people are quick to forget that we beat essentially the same steelers that is competing in the superbowl with Kellen under center. If you watch any of the games that he started his fall back option when the turnstile oline couldnt protect anymore was the TE, now we have a playmaker with Dustin Keller, and our oline will be even better then it was last season. I think he could be very serviceable, given what he NOW has surrounding him.
