Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum (sorry, I can't type the name without linking to this) says he hopes to get "initial feedback" from Brett Favre regarding his 2009 plans before the NFL Combine starts on Feb.18 in Indianapolis.

Gary Myers from the New York Daily News has the poop.

Talk about tiptoeing through the landmines semantically. "initial feedback?" Yeah, that's something you can plan a season around.

New coach Rex Ryan: "Say, Mike ... what's Brett's initial feedback on playing in 2009?"

Tannenbaum: "Well, I didn't want to pin him down on anything so I'd say it was ... still in it's developing stages. His feedback was still developing. But it's initial, so that shouldn't be a shock."

Ryan: "Well, tell him to take his time. We're just going to be over here kicking the tires on quarterbacks at the combine and wondering if we need to make a run at any of the guys on the free agent market when that opens for business on March 1. If he's not comfortable making a call on this stuff before then, that's fine. Quarterback's not even a big deal position anymore. You seen that "Wildcat" formation? I know when the time comes, Brett'll be decisive and sure of his decision. Like always."

The Favre occupational death toll already includes one head coach, Eric Mangini. Now, given Tannenbaum's pussyfooting, it's pretty clear that his GM life expectancy is diminishing as well.

If Shakespeare was still around and looking for contemporary fodder, he'd have to start with the Jets. The layers of backstabbing, posturing, handwringing and irony never seem to end down in Gotham. And does anyone think this issue's going to be buttoned up by Favre's initial feedback by Feb. 18.

I think Ryan doesn't want to wait around for Favre to make a decision.

MT can't let Favre hold this entire organization hostage.

if the hope to get initial feedback before the combine is true, it looks as if we would try to draft a quarterback. That might seem obvious, but does that mean that if brett favre stays, we won't look into drafting a qb?

We should look at a QB no matter what.

Look? Perhaps. Definitely get one with a high pick? Not at all. Not definitely.

There are too many other holes to fill, and I have to assume Schott had an answer for Ryan when asked the obvious question whether Clemens can be the opening day Qb. That answer will dictate what they do.

agreed, if we feel the right guy is there for us in the draft that could be a franchise guy, obviously we need to go get him. But it is my personal opinion that the Qb's just arent that great for this years class, FA or Draft. so really I would want favre back for this year, with the understanding that if he sucks balls, is hurt, the team sucks (ala 07) or if he just plain deserves it, he will be benched so we can find out what the youngin's got.

It seems he is only holding people on this board hostage. The Jets could care less unless they don't hear by 2/27 and they will by then anyway.

There is no franchise QB in this draft. The only two 1st rounders are Stafford and Sanchez and I wouldn't want either on this team. Neither looks like a franchise QB to me. (or to anybody else apparently. At least not the people who get paid for this crap)

I can't see us taking a QB high in the draft. All we keep hearing is how "high" the organization is on Ratliff. I see us picking up a vet for insurance, and letting all 3 battle it out in camp.

exactly. The organization feels they have the right guy on the roster already. Clemens Ratliffe, and Ainge alll to one degree or another stand to be the man when Favre is gone.
Favre is only holding Cap money hostage.

No QB will be worth the pick when it's our turn. Mark Sanchez?? No thanks.

We have to get the best player available, especially in the 1st round.

We need to proceed as if Brett Favre doesn't exist.

Look at what we've got and what's available. If he comes back, he comes back. Fuck being held hostage.

If Mark Sanchez is still available at our pick, he will be the best player available.

And on another note, has anyone actually confirmed that the organization is "high on Ratliff?" The only people I've ever seen to be high on the guy are TGG posters.

Sure, whatever you say. Is he better than Matt Leinart was coming out of USC? Sanchez's NFL career will be shorter than Todd Marinovich's.

Favre was a mistake since day one.

Just wanted to say that, again.

Some interestingly bad news (IMO). I know someone who lives near the Favres and was told today that the Favres are still living in their NJ house. I would have thought they would be in Mississippi by now. I hope this does not signal he intends on staying, only that he wants his daughter to finish the school year in NJ.

and favre isnt holding the jets hostage until the combine. the only thing he is doing by not deciding now is stopping people on this board from trying to be the first to post the "Favre returns in 09" or "Favre retires, thank god!"

We will have to wait until April or May to know what he wants to do.

Initial feedback is such a pussy term.

Good for Green Bay by taking a stance last year. Even if Rodgers sucked the organization reminded everyone that the team is bigger than everyone else.

I'd like the Jets to be firm and begin the new era. That's not going to happen.
