What was so special about Nugents leg? He couldn't even kickoff into the end zone. I don't see Nugent as having more power than Feely.

Feely did well last year and earned the job.

    Goodbye Nugent.

Remarkable we get a new head coach and he gets rid of the underachievers. Mangini being an underachiever couldnt notice Nugent sucked. Ive seen better kickers at halftime kicking for prizes at the Meadowlands. Anyone who defends Nugent really doesnt know a whole hell of alot about football. Field position is key and with this clowns weak leg he was killing us.

Not many do kick in the endzone these days but Oakland kicker. If you can see the difference in there leg ur not seeing the same kickers I am.

    Feely > Nugent.

I guess we are looking at different kickers.

It's too depressing to think about at this point. We wasted a minimum of 2 seasons in 2004 and 2005 after Bradway had conclusively proven with the 2001/2002 and 2003 offseason/drafts that he was not GM material. We're still paying for some of his mistakes today.

I don't know. I never said Feely had a way better leg than Nugent. You said the opposite and I disagree.

    David Buehler: World's Strongest Kicker

The USC kicker bench-pressed 225 pounds 25 times. For some perspective, that bettered 27 offensive linemen, including Michael Oher and Eugene Monroe.

Then Buehler busted out a 4.6-ish 40-yard dash. And apparently, he's actually a pretty good kicker, too. More importantly, though (and I'm stilling this line from Gretz), imagine how many paper towel holders Buehler could destroy with his brute strength. And unlike Skippy, he's fast enough to outrun the cops, too.

    Exactly.

And I know you like to criticize the moves during Tannenbaum's term too (past and present), but he's head and shoulders above Bradway as a GM. There's a difference between trading up for Revis and Harris and trading up for Santana Moss and Dewayne Robertson, along with trading for a guy like McCaerins.

The truth is that in Nugent's rookie year, despite rarely hitting the EZ on his KO's, his hang time was exceptional and the Jets had the third best opponent's starting field position in the NFL. People on this board were knee jerking and REALLY bitching about his KO's.

I did an extensive amount of work on a detailed post that year that proved Nugent's KO's were good, the hang time allowed the coverage team to be on top of the ball carrier before they could even set a wedge. Only Neil Rackers and one other kicker outperformed Nugent through about 12 games his rookie year.

Then he hit a wall. Tired leg, whatever. After the season he talked about working on this problem, getting stonger and more stamina in his leg strength. He never really recovered.

By the way, that study I did was lost forever when this board crashed and burned a couple months after I posted it, but it did make people realize at the time that Nugent was not bad at all that year, until late in the season. In fact he was very good, and Westoff talked at length about Nugents hang time back in those days. He was running about 4.6 to 4.7 seconds, while the league average was around 4.0.

Trading up for Santana Moss was no good? He's a Pro Bowl player.

Nugent ended up being disappointing. He had a big leg coming out of Ohio State and that never translated into the NFL. And he'd miss a key kick, at times, also.

I dont really like Feely (for some reason I always think about his game with the Giants at Seattle where he missed I think 2 big kicks). He just always worry me. He got off to a bad start with the Jets as well. I guess I dont really have a problem with him being our kicker though.

As for Nugent. I always liked him. I thought he was going to be a nice long term option for us at kicker where we wouldnt have to worry about the kicking spot for a long time to come. Oh well. Hopefully Feely can continue to do a good job.

Feely is not great at all
Comparing Feely to Nugent is ridiculous
Feely has been passed over by many teams because of his inconsistency

Remember the first fieldgoal he ever tried as a professional? 2nd round draft choice kickers just do not do that; like never ever.
