I am reading a lot of articles that say the jets should take a WR with our 1st round pick and also about some of the players listed on our radar. the only problem i have with that is we are not sure who we are starting at QB, and rex ryan has clearly started (and as you see how baltimore had their success) that we will be a run first team. so why is drafting a WR our primary concern? just because we don't have a true #1 at this moment? I do not know much about hakeem nicks, (who everyone seems to like) but watching all the footage i could on youtube, doesn't he remind you guys of cotchery? a strong possession receiver with good speed that makes all the catches, may get some YAC but they are tough earned YAC due to heart and not pure speed. hes doesn't seem like a burner. isn't the reason we got rid of coles because he was not a true #1 anymore, that he became too much like a possession WR? (among other things like money, attitude, declining production) Now like i said before, i do not know much about nicks so maybe someone that is a tar heel fan or someone that watches the ACC has more insight than me can fill me in. i think if we are going to continue the plan to build a team that plays great defense, runs the ball effectively, and doesn't commit turnovers, i think we should think about drafting running back in the 1st and then WR after that. we saw how the giants had a 3 headed monster and it worked effectively. If we draft a RB at 17, i think it will be worth the value/talent over cost. we could probably pay him to a contract substantially lower than what tjones is making right now, and he will be as effective if not more due to the fact that tjones will probably decline if we look at how RBs have fared after the age of 30. yes i know jones had a great year last season, but that is can be accredited more to the OL than him. he is not flashy, actually for his physique, he goes down quite easily. it seems like he goes down a lot easier than leon, who seems to be constantly churning his legs after 1st contact. we all know thomas jones is going to be done soon, i mean look at curtis martin after he turned 30. RBs decline after 30, its as simple as that. its just the nature of the position. curtis had his best year then got injured and then disappeared for a whole year leaving us in limbo. it actually cost us from trying to keep lamont, not to mention our FO and coaching staff was partly at fault for that blunder of losing lamont with no compensation whatsoever. Drafting a RB would also give us a seamless transition once Tjones's contract runs out and actually gives us the ability to cut/trade him without leaving a hole. but i think we should draft moreno since he is a complete back and will be a good safety value for whoever we play at QB. you know that the QB will prob need to do a lot of checkdowns to the RB since we will not try to force passes downfield that could lead to turnovers. I think moreno would be a perfect RB for this since he is very elusive and has great hands. i actually wouldn't mind trading back up in the 1st to draft heyward bey if he is still there. the reason i like DHB is that he can be a great fit for our offense. he is effective on WR reverses or WR screens. you guys know screens was like 80% of our offense last season right? partly bc Bschott wanted to run a safe offense with favre and partly bc we had no one to stretch the field anyways. DHB would fix this problem. also WR screens is what we used to beat tennessee. not to mention those are the low risk passes we will probably run with our young QB and run first, pass second philosophy. I know we still have other needs, but i think we must draft impact players in the early rounds and these 2 would definitely fill two holes. WR immediately, and RB in a transition phase. what do you guys think?
I'd like us to invest in some younger o-linemen (guards), LB, DE, a short-yardage/goal line back (or a decent sized play-maker RB) and a blocking TE. WR would be a nice luxury also.
I have watched some of the combine, but I am not all that familiar with the players coming out in the draft... but aside from your comments about guys like Moreno, Nick or Heyward-Bey, I agree with a lot of your post. But I would be much more comfortable drafting a fast power back than a wideout in round one. I think it's moot, though. I will be shocked if we don't draft defense in round 1.
Yeah man try indenting or splitting this up in some paragraphs. At least START your sentence with an upper case I
give the kid a break, I see your point but give the kid a break. He has an intersting perspective on the draft considering that we may be starting a "young" QB.
abyz broke it down for us... thank you for doing that it made it easier to read. anyways - I still want my blue chip QB.
Gentlemen, until we have a vicious defense that can stop the run and smash the pass, it will rarely matter what the QB's resume says. Just sayin'...
The reason I would take a WR this year without a QB is that it would give the WR a year to learn the system and the speed of the NFL and then Draft a much better QB next year when the class is going to be much better and much deeper.
Our holes on this team are a few, but they are glaring ones. Regardless of the open QB competition between Ratliff and Clemens, we will pick Sanchez in the first round to be groomed as our future franchise QB. We'll pick a wide receiver in the 2nd round. There will be plenty of good receivers available to choose from.
If the person didn't know better they'd deserve a break. But it's pretty clear they are just being lazy at the expense of others. Therefore the comment.
The obvious answer on the run first point is your ability to run is affected by how much of a threat your passing game is. Right now I can't imagine our current corps of wideouts scaring anyone. Add a deep threat and the risk of going downfield and that helps the running game.
lol, 2 posts by this guy and he hasn't even said anything that relates to the topic? are you the grammar police? do you have nothing to contribute to this thread besides making patronizing comments? either say something meaningful or shut up and don't read it. the purpose of this thread was to gain insight to those who may know more about hakeem nicks and also discuss our drafting strategy in the early rounds now that key holes on defense have been addressed. so please, if you are so smart, how about saying something meaningful?
only critique I have is your vastly outdated signature. Bush went in the 4th round... Carriker and spencer in the 1st.
Didn't we just go get that with Ryan, Scott and Sheppard. Maybe it's not perfect but we can't keep ignoring the offense and expect the defense to do it all on their own and if you spent the entire draft on defense you would still have no guarantees.
