I thought the board could use a palate cleanser after all of the Cutler threads. What were the worst calls (that either helped or hurt the NYJ) in the history of the franchise? I'll start: Keyshawn no-catch in EZ against the Skins in 96 Vinny phantom TD against the Seahawks in 98 Baker "force out" against Cleveland in 2006 No-TD (catch ruled out of bounds) in final game of the season against Lions in 97 Refs let Raiders run play at end of game instead of resetting ball/clock in 1993
As much as the #2 moment helped us, it probably ranks up on Seattle's all time worst list. That call cost Denny Erickson his job.
This was the first one to pop into my head, mainly because very few people seemed to notice it, discuss it or do anything about it. On top of that it ultimately cost us a playoff spot and our coach. The clock should have run out.
Which probably helped them because they replaced him with Mike Holmgren. That might have been the worst call though, it actually was the catalyst for bringing back replay.
How about the f#cking parade for Tim Brown making his 1000th catch in the middle of a goddamn drive where they carted his mother onto the field to celebrate with him, essentially giving the Raiders a free timeout? Pisses me off just thinking about it.
In the Mud Bowl, if I remember right, I think Miami fumbled on their one offensive TD drive and it wasn't called a fumble. I want to say Woody Bennett, the ex-Jet. Not sure about that, but perhaps had the game still been 0-0, Todd doesn't throw the INT to Duhe for their second TD. The game was 0-0 at halftime.
The pass should have been ruled incomplete, Bryant Westbrook was bobbling the ball and clearly out of bounds when he caught it. A few others: -The Interception at Houston in the '91 WC game, it was around the 5 yd line, we lost by a TD. -Thurman Thomas clearly fumbled before he crossed the GL in the '93 2 pt loss at Buff. -Rob Moore is tackled at the GL in the '94 loss at GB w/ no call. we lost by 7.
I believe it was Bennett, Gastineau recovered it and they gave it back to Miami and they scored their only offensive TD on that drive.
That's same play as this one, correct? <No-TD (catch ruled out of bounds) in final game of the season against Lions in 97> EDIT: just saw NYJUNC's post above.
Kudos for remembering that one. What a fucking joke that was. The NFL should change the rule or make a rule about that type of player-achievement-specific stoppage of play.
If i had to pick one off the list, i'd say #3. That was a bunch of bullshit. We could have been 11-5 in 06 instead of 10-6. If i had to pick one off the list, i'd say the bullshit holding penalty we had against the 49ers last season. That wasnt holding, and leon took that kickoff return to the house.
The Moore play was a non-call, it should have been but the O'Brien INT at houston clearly hit the ground(there was also a questionable 4th down inside the Hou 10 where it appeared Freeman Mcneil had enough for a 1st down but they didn't give it to us) and Thurman Thomas clearly fumbled before scoring that TD.
In the 1985 Wild Card game we fumbled the second half kickoff and Johnny Rembert (I think) returned it for a Pats TD. I always thought either the fumble itself was wrong or the ball should have been dead, nullifying the return/TD, but it's a long time ago now. Also, let's not forget the roughing the passer the following year in the playoffs against Mark Gastineau on Bernie Kosar. Hard to change the outcome of a playoff game on a call like that but they did it.
Baker's "force out" has always been one of my most memorable god-awful calls, especially after numerous fans made those Youtube videos that they highlighted the area that he would have came down in, about 3 feet in bounds.....that is until the league swiftly took them all down. And off-topic a bit; for some reason this made me think about terrible playcalls in the past, especially the Lamont Jordan RB option-pass against the raiders a few years back that got brought back for a TD by Ed Reed. God how that still grinds my gears.
