Favre and Madden retire the same year. Coincidence? I think not! Madden couldn't bear the thought of being in the booth without his man crush in the league.
I'm gonna miss the guy. Coming home from a Jets game all buzzed and hearing him call the Sunday night games really grew on me. SNF won't be the same anymore.
It's a sad day. I know he has seen better days as a broadcaster but he was a classic and we don't have many classic voices left.
Cris Collinsworth will replace Madden, moving over from the network's studio show, NBC Sports chief Dick Ebersol said. Collinsworth filled in when Madden took a game off last October. http://www.abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=7352177
I think his final Jets game was the Week 16 game in 2005. I attended that one. Horrible, horrible game.
“Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field.” Gonna miss Madden gems like that.
Frank Caliendo does him better than he does himself...he'll just have to get by on the zillions the Madden footballl franchise brings in for him...
Boom!!! "C'mon, its 3rd down and you got ways to go" Boom!!! "Look for a whole in the middle and let your man through"
I missed his best years and have no real attachment to him. Summerrall had a legendary voice, I don't think Madden brought nearly as much to the table as him. He seemed to just point out the obvious. Just my opinion.
Madden was adept at explaining line play. He was great in the 1980s and early to mid 1990s. He started to fall off a bit in the late 1990s and was quite mediocre in the 2000s.
i couldnt stand him the last few years, one minute saying how well a certain play or style worked and then the next after it didnt work saying how he was never really a fan of it.
Madden loved and understood the game and the players and translated that love to the audience very effectively. He was also original and while he may have become a characture of himself the last few years, there are very few originals in anything. It was time to go but he like Cosell will never be replaced.
