He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up 1 run....can't complain about a start like that. It's not his fault we lost

Our bullpen was well rested too, last 2 games of the Rays series only Bruney and Rivera pitched out of the game. I think it mite be time for a tweak, I know it's early but none of those guys distinguished themselves last year. I like Edwar tho

That's right, it's going to be a long season when the best set-up man you have is a utility man.

There is no reason to panic, but the Yankess do have some jerk off relievers. I still think the Rays and Yankess will make the playoffs. The Orioles blow and Toronto will likely win around 77 games.

My favorite feature is the lineup scoreboard with the real time batting averages. After every at bat the average ticks up or down.

Bret Gardner and Cody Ransom are terrible. I think Ransom ended the day at .103.

It's not okay, but it sure as hell ain't a sign that the Yanks need pen depth right now. They've been mostly lights out, and occasionally shitty. This will sort itself out, because there are plenty of pieces ready to replace any that aren't currently working.

As was pointed out before, it's about having lots of arms, and seeing what works... not about having "proven" guys. Proven doesn't mean shit for most non-closer/setup relievers. Seriously, name me a team that has had a deep bullpen of the same three or four reliable relievers year in and year out. It doesn't exist.

The Angels had about a 3 or 4 year run with Percival, Shields, Weber, and Donnelly but that's pretty much all I can think of offhand.

Yeah, I guess that's the proverbial exception to the rule, although Weber was only really solid for two years with that group. In 2004, he was in 18 games with a 8.06 ERA. And if you break down what they did from 2002-2004, there were ups and downs within the group... they just always had someone from the group who was pitching very well. But that supports the idea that having a lot of options is a good thing.

I'm satisfied with his start. Combine Opening Day Jitters II, the fact that it's a new park, in front of a new home crowd (known for it's short patience,) against a team that has seen him pitch the majority of his career's starts, and I'd say 1 run in more than 5 innings of work is pretty damn good.

    Totally agree on all counts.

Ransom is garbage, but he's all we have right now until ARod returns. You can't make lemonade out of shit.

Gardner shows flashes. He's never going to play in an All-Star game, but he can play well enough for his role on this team.

Not to sound like I'm hitting the panic button, but the Yankees' pen sucks. Apart from Bruney and Mo, who do you feel comfortable handing the ball right now with a 1 run lead or at a deficit? Robertson is a possibility, but he's got all of one game so far to make a determination from.

We need at least two guys for eariler than the 8th, a servicable long-innings guy who we'll need probably once a week, and a quality 7th inning guy who will be needed 2-3 times a week. I think Robertson is the most likely to fill the long-relief role. What about the 7th inning though? That's a role that I was sure would be filled by one of Coke, Marte, and Veras. None of them have been "impressive" thus far. Edwar is not the same guy he was last year either.

We have eight relievers on the active roster. Of those, only Bruney and Mo have pitched great so far. (Again, Robertson only has a game, so we should exclude him from any positive or negative, so we'll say out of 7.) Of 5 pitchers, we can't get anything consistent? That's not a good sign.

Truthfully though, I don't even blame the pitchers so much as I do Eiland. He's done a terrible job of fixing guys' mechanics the entire time he's been our pitching coach. I think a lot of the pitching woes fall on his shoulders. There's talent here, but he's not bringing it out, and at the end of the day, what is a pitching coach's job if not fixing mechanical problems for his staff?

See? If Cappy were here, he'd have told me to relax and not worry about Joba early on.

Look on the bright side, Cody Ransom has 3 more chances at least to get his average over .100.
