In Pacman's great year of 2006 the Titans had the league's 27th ranked pass defense and gave up 24 passing TDs; only six teams allowed more. Not that that's all on him, of course, but the guy is not a great cornerback. He's an opportunistic guy who will make a few plays and give up a lot more. And this is leaving out his off-the-field stuff. As has been proven time and again in the league, if a guy is a great talent, he will be given countless opportunities. Instead in the last two years the only team that has gone after him is Dallas, and even they couldn't keep him on their roster for an entire year. (Part of which he was suspended for.) I think the report of the Jets' supposed potential maybe interest is flimsy and the guy's overall talent is questionable anyway. He's a fine punt returner (which the Jets don't need) and a so-so cornerback who couldn't even stick with the Cowboys. Sorry, but it's true.
To me this is well worth the gamble. Why? B/c he's going to come cheap and unlike the Cowboys and Titans we dont actually NEED him. He would be behind Revis, Sheppard and likely Strickland immediately, which would cause him to want to be on his best behaivor to actually climb up the depth chart and ultimately earn a bigger payday. If he keeps going to strip clubs or cant stay focused, we cut him for a minimal cap hit. It's a low risk, high reward type move.
True - Samuel's presence in the team affected his position in the depth chart, but acquiring one player is not the reason why a two time Probowler falls from being first in the depth chart into being no. 5 in the depth chart, and you know that. Sheppard was in Andy Reid's dog house the entire 2008 season. It's not like Sheppard's talent suddenly disappeared in 2008. So no, the depth chart isn't always about talent, the players, coaches, GMs and owners are all people, and their relations and feelings for each other as well as the players' salaries, among other aspects all affect the depth chart.
I think it's a low-reward (not a great cornerback) high-risk (guy too stupid to avoid being suspended even when he knows one screw up gets him suspended). This isn't an elite talent whose problems are way in the past. This is a guy suspended just a few months ago for being unable to avoid getting in a fight with his own freaking bodyguard. No thanks.
He isn't going to get paid a whole helluva lot, he's going to have to compete for a roster spot, He has to be aware that this is likely his last opp., and the jets lose no face by cutting him if he screws up again. He's a VERY talented player that although inconsistent, has played at a high level and still has some untapped potential. He comes in w/ a chip on his shoulder fighting for a key role on the team...if he screws up or stinks he gets cut...if he comes in focused and ready to work he has a chance to be a great compliment # 2 corner paired w/ Revis.
Thats not a true indicator of one corners success. I mean pretty much everyone in the league agrees Revis had one hell of a season last year, one that pretty much solidified him as a top 2 corner in the league in only his second season. That said i believe our pass defense was ranked 29th. while giving up 23 passing tds. So it is possible to have an elite CB on a really shitty overall PD team.
I am no longer a Jets fan if we get Pac Man Jones... Simply cannot root for a team that would sell its soul to bring in someone responsible for a good man being paralyzed. PLEASE TANNY AND REX - FORGET ABOUT THIS ANIMAL!
definitely, he done been through the skruggles. he likedid dem skrip clubs. we all skruggle. dem jets skrugglin so let him join the skruggle his last interview as a dallas cowboy
What was Ray Lewis convicted of again? So in other words, one criminal...Got it. So let's look at him. Year Team G Att Yds Avg TD 2005 Baltimore Ravens 15 269 906 3.4 3 2006 Baltimore Ravens 16 314 1,132 3.6 9 2007 Cleveland Browns 15 298 1,304 4.4 9 2008 Cleveland Browns 16 279 1,002 3.6 4 Decent. I wouldn't call it a saving grace...but decent. I know you're not saying this with a straight face. Is the risk, his attitude and legal issues, worth the reward, PR and 3rd CB? I'm not thinking so.
That is true, good point. That said, Revis is a legitimate shutdown corner who opponents avoid. Jones isn't in the same league. He's a guy who makes some big plays and will give up his share of them, too. On his best day he's, I dunno, Terrell Buckley. Who was also a great college player and hit or miss in the NFL. People saying Jones was a top-5 NFL cornerback...that never happened.
Bring him in. Rex Ryan seems like the kind of staight to the point kinda guy that players relate to, no BS with this guy, maybe him and Burress could make it work. Damm, both of these woudl help.
Honestly...I'd love to have him. He'd be a great nickel back. And let's be honest..other than Revis, who's a better cover corner than he is...? Sign him to an incentive-laden contract and see what he can do. I know it's not the Jets' job to babysit him, but you can bet with the NFL offices in New York, Goodell will have his operatives watching him..CLOSELY.
