I'm sorry if I'm not making it clear, but I don't care about their future value in this case, as I don't care about Penny's or Smoltz's.

If a GM could rent Hamels or Marquis for the rest of 2009, for the same cost, I think they would all overlook the production of both in 2009, and look at what they have done lately.

That's cherry-picking. The whole season, including April.

No, cherry picking would be if it was just his 15 best starts, this is just illustrating a trend. A trend that has lasted for 3/4 of the season so far. He got off to a slow start, but has been good since. And as I said, even including April he's still been league average which is all you expect out of a 5th starter.

The two players aren't comparable is the problem. Of course anyone is going to take Hamels if given the choice. How about something like Marquis and Penny, where they are at least similar players in terms of age. In that case yes, Marquis would be the choice (though I just quickly glanced at his stats, nothing in depth) based on this season. But the scenario you gave is apples and oranges.

this is not good baseball right now. losing 2 of 3 so far to oakland at home is just pathetic.

In that case, after the first inning tonight, Penny's been trending up up up! You must be psyched!

Boston should have learned from the Yankees that in most cases old NL pitchers become horrible in the AL east.

Two good starts in a row for Gonzalez, against the Yankees and Red Sox.

A's knock Lester out in the 6th inning. 4-1 Oakland with the bases loaded and two outs for Adam Kennedy against Delcarmen.

Kennedy grounds out to send it to the bottom of the 6th.

Lester should have been out of the inning, the ump blew a strike 3 call which should have been out 2 and the guy walked, next guy flew out.

Either way, 4-3 now heading to the 7th.

Normal, but the story came out after most of them were already there. Tomorrow might be a better gauge.

Does this mean Yankee fans have to go out and find those big foam needles for next weekend now?

Well, he gets to avoid finding out the home reaction, as the story will have faded by the time he gets back to playing in Fenway.
