by M.A. Mehta/The Star-Ledger Wednesday August 05, 2009, 11:47 PM CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Coach Rex Ryan revealed his timetable to have a starting quarterback in place for the first time Wednesday. The closely scrutinized competition between Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez likely will be settled before the Jets play the Giants on Aug. 29, the coach admitted. "Obviously, you want to make that decision as fast as you can," Ryan said. "But we're not there yet. I'm not ready to do that. Ideally, you like to have a pretty good idea going into that third preseason game who the guy is." Neither quarterback has looked overly impressive through the first six days of training camp. Sanchez, who completed 6 of 13 passes Wednesday, took more first-team snaps in the 9-on-7 drills. Clemens completed 6 of 10 passes and took all but one of the first-team reps in 11-on-11 drills. "I think it's a good competition," Ryan said. "We'll start seeing a little more when we start scrimmaging more. We'll find out in the end. I think we'll have a good feel of who's our guy." Clemens had his second consecutive turnover-free practice. "Clemens has a better grasp of the system than Sanchez does," Ryan said. "They both have their moments. And then they've had their moments when it's like, 'What are you doing?''' Sanchez is expected to get more first-team reps in the coming days. "We obviously have to get him reps with the 1's to make this a competition," Ryan said. "We never drafted him not to be a guy who's going to compete for the starting job." Ryan believes the re-tooled Jets secondary can be elite this year. "I'm very confident in this group," Ryan said. "We are loaded." WR Aundrae Allison was claimed off waivers from the Vikings. The 6-0, 198-pounder has 18 career receptions for 231 yards. In another move, the Jets waived wide receiver Mario Urrutia... DE Sean Ellis missed part of practice with a back injury that isn't believed to be serious. ... CB Donald Strickland was kicked in the knee by WR David Clowney but isn't expected to miss any time. ... Jehuu Caulcrick was the first-team fullback in place of the injured Tony Richardson (hip) . ... RB Shonn Greene (ankle) took part in the afternoon special teams practice after missing the morning session. Kris Jenkins (calf) missed his fourth consecutive day of practice... Ryan is down to 322 pounds after losing 20 pounds in the first week of his liquid diet... Thursday's intrasquad scrimmage was moved to the adjacent grass field to better accommodate full-blown tackling. The time was moved up to 6 p.m. because there are no lights on that field. Dave Hutchinson contributed to this story.
Ryan is down to 322 pounds after losing 20 pounds in the first week of his liquid diet Section 227 should be happy about this.
Hahahahahahaaa.... I've been on a steady liquid diet for years and never lost that kind of weight. I guess Corona is the wrong liquid diet.
I got the same results one time when I opted for an even cheaper version of Corona. Forget the brand now, but it was a Corona knockoff, brewed in Nicaragua... even looked like a Corona bottle and I said what the hell, it was $19.95 for 24 bottles instead of $23.95. I stopped drinking it when I looked in the bottle one day and noticed the beer was cloudy and looked like it had fecal matter floating around in it.
"Obviously, you want to make that decision as fast as you can," Ryan said. "But we're not there yet. I'm not ready to do that. Ideally, you like to have a pretty good idea going into that third preseason game who the guy is." Heh. WSW said that was when it would be.
lol. I remember I had a six pack of that in college one afternoon and I got a headache before I sobered up. It was like the hangover started at the same time the buzz did. My roommate was laughing his ass off at me because he refused to drink it. That shit is poison!
It's good that we will see a quick decision made. The last 2 - 2 1/2 weeks of preseason our starter will be able to get all the reps with the starters.
That's pretty standard stuff any time you have a QB competition, because everyone now sits out the 4th pre-season game except the fans who were roped into paying full price + parking. Doesn't necessarily mean it will happen that way but that's what they're hoping for.
I would have hoped it would be sooner. Your starters sit the final game, so what kind of real action does that give them in the preseason?
But then what can they base anything on? Just practice? We talking bout practice, man, practice. We ain't even talkin bout the game, we talking bout PRACTICE. Practice, man, we talkin bout practice.
This statement could be related to our offense in some way. Not good. I like that the QB will be chosen pretty early, but I can't see Sanchez winning it that quickly.
