I don't see this happening mostly because I believe an elite pass rushing OLB is going to be the priority in the draft. Unless someone like Terrence Cody were to fall to us in the draft, I'd be stunned if the Jets didn't try to find someone DeMarcus Ware / John Abraham type of prospect... essentially someone who can be what Gladys hasn't been. This defense is a Kris Jenkins and elite pass rusher away from being a terrifying defense. The Jets D is great statistically but it isn't there yet in terms of being overwhelmingly disruptive.
Julius Peppers may end up being an option. He hasn't been himself the last couple years..but he's playing for an underachieving Panthers team and has made it well known he wants to play OLB in a 3-4. Playing in NY, in a scheme he prefers, for a coach that will absolutely take advantage of his skillset could mean big things. He'll command big money, but w/ the way the draft goes these days...is he really gonna end up making a whole lot more than an unproven rookie pass rusher we take in the first round....I.E vernon gholston??
Assuming we pick in the late teens / early 20s I think it'd be cheaper to go with the draft pick. Also, doesn't Jenkins and Peppers have some bad history together?
I know Jenkins had problems in Carolina as has Peppers. I'm unaware of any issues between the 2...but their both big time talents. I agree that if we're getting a sure thing w/ the late first rounder thatd be the better option. My only concern is that these 3-4 OLb's are bigtime enigma's coming out of school. Gholston is a great example. I'd much rather pay a guy in his prime w/ a proven NFL skillset to our defense to the next level.
How good would Vilma look on the Jets right about now? And we had him, too. Which knee did he hurt again?
Vilma would still look small and ineffictive in this scheme like he was in the last 3-4 defense we played. Harris > Vilma
Nothing against anyone we have now, but a good LB is a good LB. Rex could figure out a way to make it work. Doesn't matter now, I guess, but we did have him here.
You think Peppers would be a free agent next offseason? I can't imagine the Panthers FO wanting to franchise him AGAIN paying him almost 17-18 million
I'm telling you guys....Adalius Thomas is gonna make it his "life's work" to destroy Belichick and the Patriots....if any of the information coming out of NWE is true. I've said this about Brett Favre...a player viewed as a slacker is different when he's motivated....I would LOVE a motivated Adalius Thomas in our LB corps. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/12/14/warren-says-adalius-thomas-leaked-lategate-news/
Only thing that worries me is Belicheat trading him somewhere, altho who would give up a draft pick for his contract?
he's not going to trade him....his cap number makes him basically untradeable. His base salary in 2010 will be about 5 million with an additional 2 million added from his Option bonus. He's basically in a Vernon Gholston type situation.....but the uncapped year will allow the Pats to cut him without taking a hit. correct me if I'm wrong, fellas....I got this info from some douchebag's blog...not sure how credible it is http://www.mattspatsblog.com/?p=385
If that's piece in MB's quote is accurate, then Adalius would be much more of a contributor than say, O'Connor or the guy formerly known as The Ghost. Sounds alot like there's some bad blood brewing up there in Patsie land and the Jets would be crazy not to exploit it this upcoming offseason especially since Thomas has a good history with Ryan and would have plenty of incentive for payback..
it's very rare when a linebacker is one of the best players in the nfl, ala lewis, urlacher, etc; etc;. bart scott is not one of those type linebackers, hense why he's not worth 8 million a year. unless you're a jets homer!
far from being one of the brightest comments on this board today! thomas is still worth some dough to a lot of teams, his measurable's will attest to that. anyone jets homers thinking he'll come to play just because of rex are delusional jets homers. he was great with the ravens because of suggs, lewis, and scott. without them, he's not the standout belichicken thought he was. he's good, but not great. if he's cut by the pats, it's highly unlikely he's going to take a cheap deal to play for rex just to get back at the patriots. major homer thinking there......
i believe he did do his homework and is correct, thomas has played sub par football for what he's being paid, just as is bart scott. neither is an 8 million dollar linebacker, ala, a younger ray lewis or brian urlacher. and to think he's going to leave money on the table (his last contract) just to come play for rex and get payback against belichick is lol. it's you who needs a wakeup call! get real
bingo, between the two, he's the man the jets should want. can play every d-line position on a 3-4 defense. jenkins go's down again, seymour slides from end to middle, no problem. backup nose tackle position solved at the same time......
What if we just got Thomas Seymour and Peppers? Then we can probably trade Rhodes and Gholston to Mangini for Shaun Rogers and a 3rd. HEy now!
we don't need linebackers! we need d-line and as i said above, he plays every line position. by far more valuable than a depth linebacker, which by the way, thomas will never sign for. he's a starter, not great, but good enough. seymour is the true value here and it's really not even close. if he ever hit the free market, you would see teams making major efforts to get him....
