i know Deon's revis/woodson takes have been talked about on here b4, but here's his latest from today's ny post: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/deion_revis_great_woodson_better_VGORJomI9Up2ATGTPN0ZXO FBG214 here: the great DPOY debate, revis/woodson. I watched a game this year that woodson dominated in many respects, including a shoestring tackle behind the LOS that probably saved a TD. Woodson is a true specimen and getting the DPOY would not be a huge crime (unlike various pro bowl selections). But when you read the comparison numbers between Revis and Woodson, keep in mind that the numbers that DO NOT show up in the Revis col are the benefits of having an extra safety almost 70% of the time due to Revis' ability to play on Revis Island (an ability Woodson does not have). So to be far, media should compare Woodson to Revis + extra safety, but whatever, the article is intersting and comes from 'where the hell is the sidelines' Deon Sanders. for newbies: Deion Sanders has to admit it. In his eyes, Darrelle Revis falls short to Charles Woodson for the NFL?s Defensive Player of the Year. Revis is the Jets? otherworldly star cornerback, having notched his second straight Pro Bowl selection and having earned the Jets? team-voted MVP. Sanders, arguably the greatest cornerback of all time, said he and Revis communicate every week. He gushed about him, calling him the sport?s best cornerback. Just not its defensive player of this season. ?I think [Packers cornerback] Charles Woodson should be Defensive Player of the Year,? Sanders, who works as an NFL Network analyst, told The Post yesterday. AP Darrelle Revis ?I think Revis is going to be the best corner in the game for years. But honestly this year, right here, Charles Woodson has made a lot of plays, man.? There?s no question that Woodson has a strong case ? statistically he has a stronger one than Revis. Woodson has more tackles (74 to 71), sacks (two to zero), forced fumbles (four to zero), interceptions (nine to six), interception return yardage (179 to 121) and return touchdowns (three to one). Revis, however, has faced an absolute slew of elite receivers ? Houston?s Andre Johnson, New England?s Randy Moss (twice), Buffalo?s Terrell Owens (twice), Carolina?s Steve Smith, Atlanta?s Roddy White and Cincinnati?s Chad Ochocinco (in case you hadn?t heard). Woodson?s opponents included Ochocinco, Minnesota?s Sidney Rice (twice) and Detroit?s Calvin Johnson, but little else. Still, Sanders noted that Woodson returns his interceptions for scores and thinks he should be the fifth corner to win Defensive Player of the Year, following Mel Blount (1975), Lester Hayes (1980), Rod Woodson (1993) and Sanders (1994). As for Revis, Sanders said, ?I think he?s the best [corner] right now in the game. Footwork, instinct, study habits. Even off the field. Speaking-wise at press conferences, he?s really a complete person.? Sanders said he initially reached out to Revis through former Jets corner Ty Law, who played with Revis last season. ?I saw something in him that he had something. He had that ?it? factor,? Sanders said. ?Mostly I just text him and encourage him.?
I think that Sander's thinking is pretty much in line with others. Revis is the games best corner but not the DPOY and the reason for that is the difference in picks, FFs, TDs etc.
Don, your right. just comparing ints, etc gives woodson a big advantage. my thought was that much of the 'revis effect' won't show up in his numbers but in rex having a free man on the field to lead the band of lunatics charge. i guess it's a 'bigger picture' than pure individual stats can provide, which mean unfortunately revis probably won't win.
Neon Deon (Prime Time) Sanders seems to have some sort of relationship with almost everyone - there can only be about 3 players in the league he is not offering some form of encouragement and advice to.
Sanders has regarded Revis as the best cover corner all year. But EVERYONE circle jerks on Woodson's pick sixes and sacks. The only person I heard clearly take Revis over Woodson was Marshall Faulk. and he cited the fact he shut down a who's who of WR's this year while Woodson has the advantage of playing the Bears, Lions, and Vikings WR's twice a year. He also said Woodson should thank Cutler for some of his INT's. My friend told me somewhere someone wrote an article stating that Revis is better at his position than anyone else is in the league (ie Revis is a better CB than Manning is a QB) that I have to agree with, Revis is textbook everything you want in a CB. Woodson will win DPOY cuz its a numbers game, I just wish people would take into mind that Woodson has been repeatedly beaten on scoring drives in a position where your supposed to stop people from making catches, while Revis has allowed 1 all year. (the 3 yard rocket slant from Brady to Moss). Rhodes blew his over the top coverage on Ginn so i dont count the only other instance. oh well, Revis is hands down the best CB in the NFL. I'd rather have that than him be Woodson with some nice hardware and get beat by other WR's.
Stats for the CB position don't tell the story sometimes. Obviously, if Revis has someone blanketed, they aren't going to throw his way, which will effect his INT, Tackles, etc. Woodson is a great player. But this year should go to Revis, he's been nothing less than perfect.
Which to me is a crock. Revis should be giving Deion advice, because he is already more mature and well-spoken. What advice could Deion possibly give Revis - be more of an arrogrant jerk when you're out there?
Also keep in mind that Deion prefers flashy over classy. Not to say Woodson isn't classy, but I don't think you'd ever see Revis high-stepping one into the endzone. I'm sure that loses him points with Deion...
That's kind of a ridiculous comparison to even try and make, a QB like Peyton literally has the ENTIRE offense put on his shoulders. He runs a no-huddle, decides on one of two run plays or a pass play on every snap adjusts, adjusts the blocking and routes as he sees fit based on previous defensive tendencies both yearly and within that game, adjusts to anything he sees the defense doing on that particular play, when he sees fit throws in fake audibles to keep the defense guessing (to an extent), and then after all this he still employs a hard count for an offsides or two a game and then plays the position as well as any I've ever seen live. Revis would have to be the signal caller for the defense at the secondary, linebacker, and defensive line level to compare to what Peyton has to do on a given play. Talent wise Revis as a CB is certainly on par with Peyton as a QB in that both are probably the best at what they do in the NFL; but it's not a valid comparison to compare the two when Peyton does much more pre-snap than Revis does.
Peyton Manning is the only exception IMO. thats just my opinion. its not like Manning has ever not been surrounded with talent and what he does is the epitome of being a QB. might be a stretch but for all the Woodson knob gobbling going on I will go ahead and say this then. No player is as important to their defense as Revis is. without his coverage ability these exotic blitz packages would be picked apart.
I don't have a HUGE problem with Woodson taking DPOY. Revis has been by far the best corner this year, even with Woodson's numbers taken into account. However, I think a lot of people here are assuming that those numbers are the reason why people are picking Woodson. It's not. While Revis has been absolutely dominant in his role as #1 CB this season, Woodson has seen his role shift to meet the needs of the team. As players have fallen, he's been used all over the field as a jack of all trades and STILL managed to have a great year as a corner. I think people are picking Woodson despite the fact that they know he hasn't been the best corner. They simply see him as the biggest asset to his team's defense as anyone in the league. It's tough to objectively argue with that approach.
