I would have been nice if he didn't open his mouth about what rex said. We all know Rex is nuts, no need to talk about it and have it splahes all over the papers.
The article isn't as bad as the headlines(as usual) BUT he has to know better. We all know Rex is a loudmouth, no need to say what he said about his prediction. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...08/2010-01-08_joes_at_odds_with_rex_pick.html
I hope Namath doesn't turn into Mercury Morris. I didn't read the article but I'm guessing he feels that if the Jets win the Superbowl he wouldn't be as legendary? If the Jets played the Colts in the AFC Championship game, I wonder if the Jets would be bigger dogs than the Jets were in Superbowl III? What were the Colts, like 16 points favorites?
Namath needs the Jets to win a Super Bowl before he kicks off. Otherwise the Namath curse will become part of his legend. Nobody would want that.
Of course but it was something he didn't need to say. We all know it's ludicrous to think the Jets are SB favorites. An innocent comment like he made he has to know will get blown up and it did.
Everyone takes Rex at face value. Everyone in the media says he just speaks his mind and acts himself. The more I learn about Rex, the more I start to think that he is a mastermind. I truly think that saying things like this are premeditated decisions because he knows that if he does.. A) The media will dump on him (which does not affect the performance of his team) and B) He will boost the confidence of his team (which DOES affect the performance of his team) I think he knows this and is willing to be dumped on if it boosts the morale and confidence of his players. On SNY they asked a number of players what their thoughts were on Rex's statement and most of them were along the lines of "Well if Rex believes that, then I believe that". I'm starting to think what comes off as brash craziness is actually calculated sports psychology. He didn't get one of the 32 NFL coaching jobs in the world by accident. I think part of what makes him a good leader is that he doesn't sive a shit what ANYONE thinks except for his players.
These players love Rex, the Media dumping on him might even be even more motivation. Think about it for a sec.
Of course and he learned all of that from his father. Anybody around in those days remembers that Buddy did exactly the same thing as Rex is doing now.
Rex makes an incredibly lame statement and Namath is asked about it and should lie? Nothing wrong with Rex saying he thinks the Jets are the best team in the tournement if he believes it. Saying they should be the odds on favorite to win the SB is just a stupid throw away line. Underdogs win all the time and underdogs are better than the favorite all the time. That has nothing to do with odds making.
He shouldn't comment about it b/c no one cares what he has to say. What rex said was stupid and everyone knows that, Joe should be smart enough not to comment on it.
Read the article. It was a positive Jets article with a headline designed to grab attention. Namath was honest and positive about the Jets. Nothing wrong with his comments at all it was nice to get his perspective.
