He's only going to make 1.2 mill... why should they release him? We don't have many picks in he draft and we are stuck in FA + he brings kind of a unique skillset in our CB corp. This is just speculation... I think: Strickland stays, Sheppard gets to test the FA market but ultimately he might stay, Rhodes gets traded for a 3rd rounder...
I'm sure Rex knows that Rhodes can be a good player but is also aware that Rhodes plays when he wants to and that doesn't sit well with Rex. If we see his inconsistent play, I'm sure other teams have noticed the same. Don't count on high trade value unless a team is desperate and willing to gamble. Lito appears to have seen his better days which is unfortunate but it happens. Strickland's inability to stay healthy doesn't benefit a defense that likes to swap players in and out during a game. Maybe they will release him with some words of hope that he can get 100% and be ready if they need him.
Why would you release him? It's not like he has some big bonuses coming his way! Keep him all the way through TC... if by then he is still not recovered/braking up then you might think about releasing him. I think there is no way in hell he gets released... it's just some newspaper idiot who had to write something about possible off-season moves and said: Who is the guy the got injured the most often? Mmm, I'll say they'll cut that guy! But you don't cut a guy who's a nickel CB making around 1 mill and has no big bonuses coming his way...
Strickland wasn't always healthy but when healthy he was good for us. It was not a small thing when he left that game the other day.
At the same time it would be madness to bank on a guy with his injury history suddenly being healthy for 19 games.
According to Adam Schefter, the Raiders are shopping almost everyone on their roster...including Nnamdi Asomugha. I would give up our first round pick for this guy. He's one of the best defenders in the game. Pairing him with Darrelle Revis would give us one of the best cornerback tandems of all time. It would also be very costly though. I think Aso would be willing to restructure to play for a winning team though. Aso reminds me so much of Troy Vincent. I think he'd be able to make the switch the safety in his later years, just like Vincent.
I would absolutely give up a first for Aso - especially considering the comments made after the Pro Bowl. Having him and Revis would open the defense up so much. Unfortunately, I would bet that Crazy Al's asking price would be more than a 1st if it's the Jets calling.
If this can be accomplished which I can't imagine it will be, I say go for it 100% and don't look back. This would be a dream tandem and in this system, would be amazing to watch.
That's what sucks though. its the Jets calling. If it were any other team, they could have Aso for just a 1st. Al would want a 1st and more. Give them Drew Coleman. His 40 time is Raider worthy.
As crazy as it sounds, especially with such a deep draft, I'd happily give Crazy Al our first and second round picks for Asomugha.
The problem (as pointed out in Syracuse's thread in the NFL Forum) is his ridiculous contract: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/02/19/raiders/index.html Tanny would have to do some serious re-structuring if the cap is coming back in 2011.
I don't see how they could suddenly force teams to get under a cap in one year. If the cap comes back I would imagine they'd have to give some time to get back under it.
The problem being if we pay Aso that you know Revis will want as much if not more. I highly doubt anything could come of this at all. It would be great on the field, but highly unlikely.
Couple things: 1) If there is no cap this year (and it's looking more likely every moment) there never will be a cap again. It's not good for the sport, but it's reality. 2) Who cares? You make this deal with the intention of carrying the Lombardi down the Cavern of Heroes in February of 2011. After that, the team needs an overhaul if there is a cap. There's no way you keep this team intact into September 2011 with a cap. I'll take the risk of going for broke. Once I've had the chance to cheer drunkenly as the parade goes by I'll worry about the future.
Do you mean to say that there will not be a cap negotiated into a new CBA? Or that they will simply not successfully negotiate terms of a new CBA?
I wouldn't mind a 1st AND a 3rd either (trade out of 2nd, pick up a 3rd and a 4th or 5th). We'd be getting a proven ALL-PRO CB to go with another ALL-Pro. Remember, we have the 29th overall pick, not a top 10 pick. So its value isn't as much and there are teams who would be willing to give up higher pick than us. We may even have to give up a 1st AND a 2nd.
