yeah...and can WE STOP starting a new thread every time some A-hole makes the SAME ERRONEOUS argument? God, this is SO OLD already.
So if you understand football you know that LT is better than Jones? The Jets didn't want to pay Jones and let him go. They picked up LT in the hopes he can give them some carries and not suck. No way they upgraded at the RB position. Greene/Jones is better than Greene/LT any day. In an uncapped year, I'm surprised the Jets didn't just bite the bullet and pay Jones.
What's to understand? Grrene with jones is better than Greene with LT. The article is correct that this is not an upgrade for the Jets.
jones would not have wanted to be in a backup role like LT is going to be. Also, LT is more versatile as he can catch out of the backfield... I wouldn't say its an upgrade but its not a downgrade either. Greene will fill in Jones's role nicely imho
LT is more versatile than jones could ever hope to be. the production of the two backs can't really be compared especially this past year's stats. jones was part of a team that ran the ball more than any team in the league, while LT was in a pass happy offense with a line that is nowhere near ours in terms of run blocking.
Jones was not going to be the starter in 2010. At most, he'd be the 3rd down back. But TJ would be very limited as a 3rd down back. He's not a good dump-off option. That's where the upgrade is, because Sanchez likes to roll wide of the line a lot on play action and he gets himself in trouble when our guards (Faneca in particular) cannot hold their blocks. TJ could not get separation from defenders to be even a passable dumpoff man. He has no awareness as a receiver. LT has excellent awareness as a dumpoff man and he's about the same in the pass blocking department. He also has much better vision than Jones ever had, and he's running behind an O-line that opens up zone lanes that a truck could drive through. I'm not even sure how effective TJ would be in NY, knowing he'd be the backup guy. He didn't really run hard last season until the Jets inserted Greene into the game, which looked like it got his nervous about his starting job. The first really tough run he made was shortly after that in that very Saints game, when he ran for a tough TD after Greene re-injured his ankle. Before that, in 2009, his open field runs were completely product of the O-line. And after he had all but lost his starting job in the playoffs, once his number came up against the Colts, he looked like a broken man. The only thing that may make TJ an upgrade in this scenario is his durability. I love how I keep seeing Pats fan overrating Thomas Jones. Maybe it's wishful thinking. Maybe it's because he is a durable stat compiler and they still get angry about losing a guy who was much better in that respect in Curtis Martin.
if our line performs as well again this year, I'm rather certain that won't be the case. the last thing you can do to make an honest comparison of the players is to compare them when they faced two entirely different dynamics. our line made Thomas Jones, first and foremost. I'm willing to be LT can perform comparably with a line that pushes people off the ball.
San Diego's offensive line is not the Jets offensive line. It's impossible to compare them until next year.
Please people neglect to remember or conveniently forget how bad he was at the end of the season. Not just bad but god awful and that was behind arguably the best oline in football. He had one game over 100 yards and that was against the second stringers of Indy in week 16. What happened when he played against the starters when Greene went down in the playoffs? I know, I know sorry to crush the Jones is way better argument...... a whopping 42 yards on 16 carries. Oh yeah the Jets are really losing big time with that going out the door. The Loss of Jones and signing of LT is a wash at worst. They swapped one has been for another has been, big deal.
It's so damn stupid for these "pro-writers" just to look at numbers....... SG is a similar runner as TJ, straight power runner. LT will used differently,,, his ability to catch from back field is adding another tool to our offense. Neither SG nor TJ can catch the ball as well as LT.. LT fits better than TJ to our system.
How is SG similar to TJ? Didn't you see the huge difference in running style when they spelled each other?
TJ isn't a power runner by any stretch. I don't get why anyone that watches TJ would consider him one. After all, big biceps do not a power runner make. All the opposing team had to do is blow on him and he would fall down. Greene is a freaking bowling ball in comparison.
I am talking about their running style,, both of them are more of straight running into the "hole". Neither of them changes pace / cut outside that much. Effciency wise -- I think I don't need to say.
Tomlinson's greatest strength as a runner is finding the cutback lanes. He doesn't have the same speed and burst as he used to thanks to his many many leg injuries, but he is still a more dynamic runner than Jones ever was. He's also a much better receiving option than Jones could hope to be.
Dumb. The jets o-line deserves more credit than jones for his 2009 numbers. While I definitely have more respect for Jones now than I did at the beginning of last season, he still spent half his carries crashing into the line for a 1 yard gain. I feel bad bashing Jones who certainly surpassed my expectations (I thought Leon would be the featured back by the end of the year), but I feel a little better with LT back there. He still has the ability and hopefully the drive to be a game changer in the running and passing game this year. Let's just hope he lives up to his potential.
The three basic runs we saw from Jones last season: 1. Jones runs at a hole that closes up before he can get to it. He gets touched and goes down instantly. 2. The OLine holds their blocks for a medium/short gain and Jones manages to pull off around 4-6 yards. 3. The Jets OLine and WRs all throw perfect blocks and push the extra effort to spring blocks down the field. Jones gets caught before he can make it into the endzone. Jones had the vision to find the hole he was supposed to run through but didn't have the speed to make it there before it closed, the burst to make it through the hole and break a tackle or the speed to run away from the defense. His ball carrying made him a great HB to have on the goal line where definitely put in the most effort but what we saw was his game slipping away from him last year. Tomlinson still has better speed and power than Jones but I don't think he is going to stay as healthy as Jones.
The other reason why Greene/Jones (with Jones as the backup) would be far worse than Jones/Greene (with Greene as the backup) was last year is that Jones often needed about 10 carries before he started breaking longer runs. He wouldn't get those carries with the Jets next year.
Didn't Tomlinson have 10 TDs last season to Jones 14? It's not a stretch to say he can have 15-20 running behind our O-line. That may be his role on this team.
