Could you imagine how valuable our pick would become if Clausen and Iupati both fell to us at 29. It would be a perfect situation for us and we would be able to get top value for our pick and trade back to receive more picks in the draft.
is a second year QB shouldn't be forced to throw outside because we found a winning lotto ticket in Holmes. Make no mistake about it, we need a DE....my only point is that given the players available, the single player that makes us better on third down on either side of the ball...is Tate. He's perfectly suited to go in the slot, he's undersized to play outside, has RB skills, and great hands. in the 3/4 a DE does not predominantly have pass rushing duties....he needs to free up the LB's (and we have 50 mil committed to Gladys..bust or not) so it follows, that we could grab a DE in the second. Madden??? Madden? AYFKM???? Madden? you talking aobut drafting a space eater, when it looks lik the F.O. is thinking Lombardi. we were the number one overall defense with JAGS at the DE position. Surely that should tell you something about the way that position figures into the scheme, and where you draft for it. If your philosophy to draft is Defense at 29, we actually need a corner.
No, he should throw outside because he is a quarterback. He already has Holmes and Keller inside to throw to. It's not like we have Mike Martz running the offense right now.
Iupati would be a good pick but it would only piss of Faneca, while Iupati sits on the bench draft a G after we cut Faneca next year.
It'd be nice to have a 2nd year Pro after a full year of grooming with Callahan to step in instead of a rookie though.
How is drafting Tate, who would be WR #4, and at best option #5 (Edwards, Cotch, Holmes, Keller) in this offense help us more on 3rd down than drafting an elite DL? you mention how we had the #1 d with junk opposite ellis, and how we should lessen it's priority... but we had utter trash behind J-co and Edwards at the WR position last year, so maybe we should lower the priority of WR, especially after the addition of a 26 year old Super Bowl MVP! Besides I don't just want the Jets to have the best defense in the NFL, I want one of the all time great defenses that makes opposing teams so afraid of to play us, that they go into the games expecting to lose. The best way to do that is to add elite talent along the DL, an elite pass rusher, or an elite safety. The best pass rushers and the best safeties are likely to be off the board at 29. Top DL like Linval Joseph or Cam Thomas are very likely to be there at 29. Just move past it, taking Tate now that we have Holmes is just a misuse of our assets
1. How in the fuck is Tate going to help us being the #4 WR in a run-heavy offense? He's going to see the field maybe 5 times/game. 2. Why would you spend a first round pick who you yourself said is not fit to start? 3. I know exactly how how a DE works in a 3-4 defense. I also know that Ellis is 32, Pouha is 31, Marques Douglas is no longer with the team and DeVito is a rotational guy at best. 4. I believe I mentioned McCourty in my previous posts. And Everson Griffen. And Ricky Sapp. And Linval Joseph. All better options for this team than Tate.
Drafting Tate after trading for Holmes and Edwards when you're a run-first team might be the single dumbest move the Jets could make. The Jets will not draft a receiver in the first two days of this draft. And if they do, they're insane.
With the Bolded part, Iupati would not start this year, but would give us the ability to cut Faneca after this year and wipe his 7+ mill he would be making while adding youth to our O-line and provide terrific depth for this years run. I agree we will most likely not draft him, bit don't see it as a negative money till after his inital contract, but a cap space boost.
I'd have no problem taking Iupati if he fell to 29 and no one else who's a "must have" is on the board. Maybe if Faneca is pissed off he'll remember how to pass block for the whole season this year.
Iupati will be able to contribute to the running game early but at this point he is not ready to pass block at the NFL level. That's probably a couple years away. Piggy backing off what some other posters have already mentioned, the FO is trying to make a SB run. More than likely they will be looking for guys that can contribute right away. I don't think they would risk having Iupati develop his pass blocking on the fly especially when you consider he is blocking for the 50 million man. I'm thinking the 29th pick will be a defensive player that has the potential to start or will be part of a rotation or package. Cue in Mr. E(go) with the reasons why the aforementioned comments are retarded.
Thanks for the introduction... Are you making this up? C'mon man. Pass blocking is one of the things Iupati does best. When he's playing left guard, Iupati is a dominant all-around lineman. His stock took a hit because he can't play tackle. I agree that the Jets are trying to make a championship run and most likely won't take a backup, developmental type prospect in the first round.
The Bengals would take Iupati if he is still around. They have guards holding out last time I checked. Took him as the Cincy GM and ran with it.......He would be a big help to them anyways. EDIT: Seems like Williams resigned....but he's 33 years old. Gotta get the depth.
Charlie Casserly said about Iupati, and I agree, that if the Senior Bowl was a regular season game, Iupati would have lead the league in holding off just that game alone. Although he was called for only a couple, Casserly felt, and again I agree, he held almost on every passing down. Mind you the defense that was being played at the Senior Bowl was very vanilla, linemen were not allowed to stunt and blitzing was not allowed. I felt he struggled similarly on the passing drills during the week as well. It makes sense because this was the first time he was blocking against that kind of level of competition and is still raw in his technique. If he could not pass block against the guys in the Senior Bowl, I don't see how he would have immediate success doing so in the NFL. This doesn't mean he is not a 1st round talent. It just means that he will need time to develop. Hence why he is considered by many a "developmental" prospect.
Casserly? Really? The guy who built the OLine that got David Carr killed season after seaosn? Just about every OLineman holds on every passing play. The 1978 rule changes pretty much allowed for holding. Yea, he has a lot to learn, most rookie lineman do. But to take EVERYTHING about one aspect of his game off of one game is a terrible way to evaluate him.
Another block of a garbage from you, legler? Iupati was playing out of position in the Senior Bowl. Like I said, his stock dropped because he can't play tackle. He's far less versatile than people thought. Still, he's the best guard prospect to come out in quite some time.
My current draft hard-on is for Everson Griffen. Iupati I would be very happy with at 29 but I really want someone on the front 7. That being said... lets trade down. No one really fits the bill at the end of the first round for us, unless someone drops way down the board.
