How the fuck do you know what our offense is going to look like next season? Seems to me that we have about the same chance of that knowledge yet it hasn't stopped you from making your own predictions with absolutely no apparent reasoning behind the.
Did you completely forget about the no WR formation that included both Robert Turner and Wayne Hunter on the field with the starting offensive line? There are plenty of opportunities in this offense for someone like Iupati to see the field.

Then there is the fact that the Jets dodged a huge bullet with the lack of OLine injuries last season. The worst one we suffered was Mangold getting kneed in the crotch and sitting for two plays. You cannot expect that kind of luck, especially when we have two starters 32 years old or older whose biggest question mark is their pass blocking skills?
The reigning AFC Champions are the Indianapolis Colts who beat us thanks to their amazing WR corps. So to counteract that, we're going to get more WRs? Wouldn't improving the defense that Manning ripped apart in the second half be a much better idea? Like adding a better OLB to pressure the top tier QBs or a better DE to help the OLBs we do have?
Edwards, Cotchery, Holmes. Nope, having those three on the field at the same time would not be productive. Not in the least.
That's the beauty of having someone like Keller on the team, a guy who can play TE on the line or line up in the slot. It's also the reason that the Jets brought in Tomlinson and why they would likely target someone like Best or McCluster if Leon was traded. Shifting from one 3WR set to another does not create that big of a matchup problem. Shifting from an I form to Slot-Ace Four-Wide with Tomlinson and Keller in the slot does. The purpose of a shift is to confuse the defense and create mismatches. You get that more from moving positions when you have dynamic players like Keller and Tomlinson.
We had less talent in the WR corps for our first four games last season than we will for our first four games this season, and we managed to pull off 3-1. Bringing in Holmes is going to open up the passing game but we're still built to be a run-heavy offense. We were the top rushing team last season, why suddenly break away from that and completely reverse course in one year?

Ok so since Holmes will only be elgible to play 3/4 of the season, he won't make jack shit of an impact, but a rookie 5th option in this offense for 3/4 the season will?

Also im confused does adding Tate who would be the slot guy for the first four games mean we added 1 full player to the offense? Or does tate count as a full person by himself which means we added 1.75 players to the offense? Because either way that argument still won't convince me Tate should be the guy we add at 29.

why are you so preoccupied with this ?

As far as next years offense, I would say it's a fair presumption that it will be more like
Schotty ran with Penny here, and like they ran in SD when he was there. And MORE balanced than last year.

We did improve the Defense. Twice.... Sherry is gone, and Cromartie is another number one Corner..Thats exactly my point about 29 and then going DE at 61.

Those are the only two positions that will see significant time on the field.

I agree about Oline injuries, but as you pointed out, Turner and Hunter remain on the roster as does Slauson. The real injury concern is Safety, with Pool a concussion risk.

LB? Not happening...(Thomas,Harris,Scott, Pace, with Westermann, Cummings, and Laury behind them)

DE...big need we agree on that point. My preference is to get value at 61. I don't see the huge drop off between 29 and 61.There is far more talent at one spot to be had at 61, than there is WR talent past 29, especially not a guy that comes from a pro style offense with a good qb that can step in right away....And be in place when we lose a guy next season.

But you cannot reasonably argue that Holmes for 12 games, improves our offensive outlook enough to take us from the bottom half of the league, to the middle-top.

And..btw...How great is it going to be for your QB, if one of the three quality Wr's utters the word...Hamstring Injury.

We have no quality depth at the position either..If Edwards or Holmes gets injured, we're now WORSE at the skill positions, than we were a year ago.

    No, thats not my point.

My point is we've replaced Sherry at FS, and added Cromartie. We've vastly improved the best defense in the NFL last year.

all I am saying is, from my own point of view, that adding one dynamic player at 29, to go in the slot and getting a DE at 61, at least helps the offense retain some parity with the defense.

    Period.

I truly believe, out of the projected top-25 picks, Thomas and Graham are sitting there secretly buried in the back of Tanny's head. If either (or both) fall within ~10 picks of 29, I 100% expect him to make the move. That signature, "give me my f***in' player" move, that only Tanny knows how to make. He's done it before, he'll do it again.

Now, of the two, I'd love for it to be Thomas.

I'm bored and I think you're wrong, mostly.
You think that the Jets will implement an offense previously run by a 6 year veteran QB with no running game to rely on for a sophomore QB with the best running game in the league to rely on? Not exactly playing to the team's strengths. Even in 2006, we were rarely running 4 WR sets and a lot less 3 WR sets than you seem to remember. Most of our sets were Coles and Cotchery at WR with Baker and Sean Ryan in a two TE formation. The times where we did run 3 WR sets were mostly to get Brad Smith out there on a reverse/end-around, utilize him as a downfield blocker, or let Justin McCareins earn another threatening letter for dropping a pass while he was wide open.
How is drafting a WR at 29 to come and fill in for Holmes for the first four games of the season and then get relegated to a smaller role when Holmes returns better value for this team than drafting someone like Odrick or Linval Joseph at 29 who could potentially play +80% of the defensive snaps all season? Why not continue to improve the defense and then pick a slot WR later? Blair White or Freddie Barnes would both be better overall value in the 4th round than spending a 1st round pick on a slot WR. The biggest crux of your argument is that we need a WR to fill in for the first four games. A first round pick is way too much to pay for that.
Iupati > Turner, Hunter and Slauson and has a chance to be a starter next season when Faneca and Woody are gone. Tate < Holmes/Edwards and Cotchery and will not be a starter next season when we lose either Edwards or Holmes.
First off, I said OLB, Harris and Scott are irrelevant to this argument.

You keep saying we need more depth at one position when you completely ignore the fact that there is no depth behind any of these players. Westerman is a good backup but aside from him, we have absolutely nothing. Let's take a look at the backups currently on the roster:
    -Gholston - enough said
    -Westerman - Solid depth
-Ezra Butler - ST tryout, undersized
-Kenwin Cummings - 2 seasons as a practice squad player, called up due to injury
-Lance Laury - ST tryout, undersized

Now let's look at who could be out there:
-Everson Griffen - Hybrid DE/OLB Athletic prowess reminiscent of Terrell Suggs; High motor; great strength at PoA
-Ricky Sapp - Hybrid DE/OLB good athlete; quick, great in prusuit
-Sergio Kindle - Hybrid DE/OLB; phenomenal athlete; Butkus(Best LB) and Hendricks(Best DL) award winner in the same year.

You're right, nothing there who could be an improvement over Bryan Thomas who is clearly on his way out.
Please see previous comment about value. Given the understanding you have shown of the word, I'm guessing you were a decision maker at Leham Brothers.
Actually, I can. Especially when simply calling more passing plays already boosts most of those stats without adding any new talent.
Nowhere near as bad as if someone on the OLine - a unit where we actually need to replace starters next season with no viable options on the roster - says the exact same thing.
No, because if Edwards or Holmes gets injured, we already have Holmes or Edwards to fill in for him.

We replaced Rhodes with a rotation of safeties whose biggest knock against them is their coverage skills. How exactly is that a vast improvement?

Reasonable enough. I don't mind the debate...just asking.
Four letter word intervening, so I can get to all of your opoints right now.

    That's not my argument.

The first four games is a bonus.

My argument, simply is that you have an opportunity to add a singular talent, for a specific role at that spot, and the drop off at DE from 29 to 61 is not so steep as to preclude adding that player, given all of the behind the scenes reasons..(cap $$$ for skill player, loss of premier talent next season etc...)

    that's all.

I don't, as i said disagree with the other positions of need. I just disagree that this position is not one as well.

BTW...How do you walk with balls that big.

You want to reach for a RB that's about Woodheads size, with ball security issues in the second ?

Hell, let's agree on Linval Joseph, and you can get on the Jordan Shipley bandwagon.

(though taking a NT in the first, only helps us if he can, A: play some 5 tech. and B we run a good deal more of 4/3

I still dont see Iupati falling past Philly, they just released Andrews and have a whole on their line.

However, if he does fall you take him unless one of the pass rushers fell. (Griffin, Graham, Kindle)

Iupati is the best guard in this draft. No one who we draft in the first will be a starter anyway. We might as well pick the player who may not help us win a superbowl this year (which actually you never know who might get hurt) but set us up to be a contender for years to come.

Actually, I want a running back/slot WR hybrid who, despite having Woodhead's size has the speed and lateral movement and fluidity that Woodhead lacks and could be a dynamic player on the offense in the second. Ball security issues can be corrected.

Great thread. I'd love to have Iupati at 29. It would obviously set up the line for years to come.

It's a tough call though, I totally agree with the sentiment that this is a team that's built for a run NOW, so a contributing player would be good, especially with the need we have at DE and OLB. Then again maybe Rex feels like with Cromartie he's able to bring the house a bit more and is less worried about OLB? I don't know.

Maybe if we get a 3-5 rounder for Leon it makes it doable because we can stock up on D-line depth there? And then a late round RB?

What kind of DE prospects will be there at the end of the 2nd round if the Jets do go Iupati?

I think it would have to be a hell of a deal plus would it be worth upsetting the best O-line in the league? That's not a great message to send to your players: thanks for performing, now beat it, we don't want to pay you. Plus with Faneca's reputation as a pass blocker taking a hit, the value may not be there at the $$$ he's getting paid.

I think they'll hope to give Faneca a chance to win another ring this year and cut him in the offseason. Especially if they grab Iupati.

Because there is no way an NFL strength and conditioning coach can get him to add some mass?

Sweet. Tannenbaum got himself a new paperweight.

The fact that Leon signed his tender just makes him easier to trade, as no one obviously thought he was worth a 2nd. He'll be moved for a 3rd to 5th, I'd say.

Don't count Steelers out. They have Mike Wallace that can fit in nicely and fill up the void for Santonio.

Cowboys definitely need OL help as we all saw how Vikes murdered Tony. I wouldn't be surprised if Cowboys went OL with the first two picks.

I wouldn't mind drafting a guard, but this can wait till the mid rounds. But if Iupati is as good as you advertise, I wouldn't mind taking a look at him.

"You know it's interesting that's why I put Pouncey ahead of [Iupati] because I think [Pouncey]'s ready to plug and play day 1...Iupati is 1 year away...[Iupati]'s the best holder I've seen in the entire country. He did it at Idaho; he did it at the Senior Bowl."

...and he's still the best guard prospect in a long time.

Maurkice Pouncey's future is at center. I think he'll be a hell of a player.

You said he isn't a good pass blocker and you couldn't have been more wrong.

Iupati is a very good pass blocker. He has to work on his technique...like Mayock and Casserly said...yeah, I watch NFL Network too.
