"Ryan mentioned Gholston got off to a late start because NFL rules prohibit draftees from reporting anything other than rookie camp until after their school holds final exams. Ohio State's quarter system takes them into June, routinely forcing their alumni to wait." I'm sick of this excuse. Derrick Harvey missed part of training camp last year due to contract negotiations and still had 3 sacks. Drafted later, missed more time and still did better.
I'm not a big fan of excuses in general, I'm waiting for him to go out and perform this season, which I very much hope he does. With that being said, every player is going to learn at their own pace. Harvey may be a better learner than Gholston. I think Rex will play to his strengths (which is obviously the guy's body and physical tools), and we'll see if Gholston CAN perform at a high level. He's never going to be the smartest OLB in football, but that doesn't mean he can't still be productive in the right system.
early last season mangina did give gholston a chance as a situational pass rusher and he sucked. all he had was a bull rush without the bull! fact is, ryan can't make a diamond out of stone. we'll see the real gholston soon enough.
Plus Harvey went into a 4-3 scheme much like he had played in college. Gholston switched from a De in a 4-3 scheme to playing OLB in a read and react 3-4 defense. It continues to amaze me how people refuse to acknowledge that players need time to develop. Wanna be mad about Gholston or a similar player's contract? Sure..get mad at the team for paying him that much and the NFL for letting pay grades get out of control w/ rookie players...but don't get mad at a guy for needing time to develop...that's what the draft is SUPPOSED to be about.
Meh. I'll believe he's anything other than a total bust when I see it. If he can make Gholston go from ghost to "major contributor" in one off-season, then he should be given a 10 year extension.
Yeah, expecting 10 sacks at this point is a bit unrealistic but I think Rex will definitely be able to find a role that's suitable for him and help the team. The talent is definitely there and he seems like a hard worker with a good head on his shoulders.
Not being inactive would be a good start. I'm telling you all, this kid a bust of epic proportions. I hated the pick back when it happened, and I've only hated it more ever since. What a waste.
nothing he has done thus far tells me he will get anything done this year. the kid didnt have explosion on a single play last year. he didnt have fire on a single play last year. he very well may end up doing as well as you think murrell but there is NO basis to make such an assumption on other than the fact that you WANT HIM TO DO BETTER. and that doesnt really mean anything in the real world.
What he did in college tells us just as much as what he did in his rookie year. Going off of that and that he will be put in a better position to be successful, and that he has had a full year of learning a new position with out missing any OTA's, gives me more reason to be optimistic than going off of his rookie season, where he missed OTA's and just began the process of learning a new position.
hahaha...I was going to post something along those lines.... guess I'll take the wait n' see approach...........again.
I think there's actually a lil more reason for optimism cus at least he's returning full time to the position that got him a 50 million dollar contract in college
I heard hes already proven himself a major contibuter, everyday he does Rexs coffee and bagel runs faster than anyone on the team. Seriously though, i am expecting an improvement in Gholston, not demanding it i just think that he is due....thats what im hoping for anyway.
