http://nyj.scout.com/2/979281.html Florham Park, NJ – The lowdown on Dwight Lowery from mini-camp is simple – the guy is making plays all over the field. Lost amid the Darrelle Revis contract talk and the new additions to the secondary such as former San Diego cornerback Antonio Cromartie and first round pick Kyle Wilson, Dwight Lowery enjoyed a solid mini-camp for the Jets. Making plays, getting in the thick of things and reading plays well, Lowery looks to be quietly emerging as a player to watch for this fall. And it all began with a position switch. Lowery hot his start in the league as a cornerback but no more, says the player. “The coaching staff feels like I can have more of an impact as a safety,” Lowery told GreenAndWhiteReport.com. “They feel I can get on the field more and make plays from there.” Judging from mini-camp, Lowery might become a part of the nickel safety package, where his speed would be an asset to the secondary. Lowery is a good cover player and putting him at safety is an intriguing idea on passing downs. He said that he is comfortable playing further back, off the line. In college at San Jose State, he had to fill-in as a safety for a handful games. The transition has been smooth, so far, he says. “The most success I’m going to have is to be in the center of the field,” Lowery said. “The coaching staff thinks that is where I can use my instincts the best.” One thing Lowery has an instinct for is being a good quote, as the player has that swagger of someone who backs up exactly what he says on the field. It’s a personality trait that lets him fit in well with head coach Rex Ryan, who is also known for his comments and personality. “When you’re confident, there’s that cockiness you get from knowing you can go out there and perform,” Lowery said about the defense’s swagger. “But it’s a fine line between being cocky and over-confident.” Lowery says the team feeds off the confidence of each other and Rex Ryan. He really likes what he sees in the defense and says that the unit enjoys working together and putting in the extra time lifting and studying tape. The defense, he said, can carry this team far. “We know we got the goons on the team to get this thing done,” Lowery said.
Nice to know the CS agrees with what some of us have been saying on TGG for a while! "Problem" now is...: Leonhard, Pool, E. Smith, Ihedigbo, Lowery and Warren all at Safety!? At this point I'm not so sure Warren makes the team...
I'm going to assume Warren stays on the PS this season and continues to develop. Than after this season I would think he would have a better chance at making the roster.
Well it seems like Lowery is kind of going to be a flex player who can either line up at safety or up on a receiver as a dime corner. If something were to happen to one of the top 3 corners, he'd be the one to fill in. I think the last spot in the secondary could come down to Warren vs. Drew Coleman. And I pray Warren would beat out Coleman.
'Bout time. He has all the physical of a top-flight safety. He could be the ball-hawk that replaces what Sherry used to do.
If Lowery moves to Safety might as well do the logical thing and keep Warren and get his weight down to be a quicker CB and cut Coleman.
I think you have too much faith in Drew Coleman keeping his dime-back job. Warren is a project and will probably be a ST contributor who could see some time at dimeback as well.
Get his weight down? He only weighs about 185. Warren ran poor 40 times because of a lingering ankle injury. In my opinion, Donovan Warren is competing with Marquice Cole and Drew Coleman for a roster spot. He's got a pretty damn good shot to unseat one of the two.
Warren is much better suited to play safety than CB, IMO. I don't see him being successful even as a dime back. Lowery at safety isn't a terrible concept. But why? We have enough equally talented players competing at the position, and Lowery has already shown he can play CB at a nickel- or dime-level. I don't really get it, but I'll trust Rex knows what he's doing...
I know I'll get bashed for this... but... in multi DBs packages is there really much of a difference between an added S and a dime back? I agree that Lowery is best suited to play in the middle of the field... after that if he's the starting FS, an added S, a dime back I really don't care...
Rex can do a lot with a tweener like Lowery who is capable of playing corner/safety and can blitz as well.
It's a subtle comment meant to say he's been saying this all along. Me and Mr.E always knew that Lowery was best suited to be a safety from our years of watching WAC football.... Great move, I have a feeling we are going to see Lowery have a breakout year. He has a knack for making plays.
having pool, lowery, and leonard on the field in the dime formation should make for some interesting coverage and blitz schemes.
Good article. Not Manish Mehta-good, but good. And by the way: Mehta's got a nice PENN STATE education.
I didn't realize he had an overblown reputation he was undeservedly living off of for the past decade. Must be a Big 10 thing.
