http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2010/07/darrelle-revis-prepared-to-hol.html July 9, 2010 10:28 AM No Comments Darrelle Revis is prepared to hold out during training camp if new contract isn't reached » By Manish Mehta The odds that Darrelle Revis will be a no-show when veterans are scheduled to report to Cortland on Aug. 1 for the start of training camp grow with each passing day. The All-Pro cornerback is fully prepared to sit out if he doesn’t have a reworked deal by the start of camp, according to sources. Simply put, Revis isn’t bluffing. The 30-day rule isn’t a concern, either. In other words, Revis will hold out beyond Aug. 10 and risk losing an accrued year toward free agency if there’s no new deal, according to sources. There’s been no progress in the negotiations in the past few weeks. D’Brickashaw Ferguson, of course, became the first of the Jets' four core players along with Revis, Nick Mangold and David Harris, to sign an extension. The Pro Bowl left tackle signed a reported 6-year, $60 million extension yesterday. In total, Ferguson received a reported $34.8 million in guaranteed money. Credit ProFootballTalk.com for closely examining Ferguson’s contract and uncovering the specifics of the deal. In essence, Ferguson is guaranteed only $5.32 million through the end of 2010. If he suffered a career-ending injury this season, he won’t see another penny. If he suffered a serious injury like Leon Washington, for example, this season, the Jets could conceivably rip up his contract, sign him for a lesser amount or cut ties altogether. Ferguson will get more than $22 million in guaranteed money if he remains healthy through 2010. There’s also some unrealistic landmarks in the deal like this: Ferguson will earn $1.3 million in incentives if he takes part in at least 97 percent of the special teams plays in 2015 and 2016 and blocks at least seven punts in each of those years. More details of the contract can be found here. So, what does Ferguson’s deal mean for Revis, who has three years remaining on his six-year rookie contract? Not much. Here’s the player you need to keep an eye on: Peyton Manning. Let’s explain. Manning, who is entering the final year of a 7-year, $99.2 million contract ($34.5 million signing bonus), could command in excess of $25 million a year. His guaranteed money could reach $50 million. Why does this matter for Revis? Well, several league sources I spoke to believe a top cornerback is worth 75-80 percent of a top quarterback. Manning is scheduled to earn $15.8 million in 2010. The 75-80 percent model would yield $11.9- $12.6 million a year for the top cornerback. Revis, of course, is looking to become the league’s highest paid corner, which would mean around $15-16 million a year with a good chunk of fully guaranteed money. Peyton Manning’s negotiations, however, are also proceeding at a slow pace due to the uncertainty surrounding the collective bargaining agreement. The Colts could slap the franchise tag on Manning after the season, but it appears that ownership is willing to work out a deal. But how long will it take? Manning’s deal could have a real impact on Revis’ contract. If the four-time MVP signs a deal for $25 million a year, it might be easier for the Jets to justify paying Revis the $16 million (or 64 percent of Manning’s average annual salary) he desires. Revis would also get a spike in the corresponding guaranteed money. Although Revis remains hopeful that a new deal will be worked out in the next few weeks, he has a definite plan if the negotiations don't progress. Who cares... I mean, good job posting this but at this point I couldn't care less about Revis and his bitching. If he reaches a reasonable deal fine, if he doesn't goodbye... either way I fully trust Tanny. PS the more he holds out the more reps Wilson gets with the #1 team...
doesn't Revis forfeit that 20 million buy-back option on his final 2 years if he misses any mandatory time?
I don't care about his bitching either and it's probably his pathetic agents just trying to stir the pot. But this is getting stupid. The Jets can keep him for 3 more seasons and he can't do anything to change that. You can't tell your team that has your rights for 3 more seasons that you want them to rip up your contract and give you a new contract thats the highest ever by a cornerback. He has no leverage and he's coming off like an idiot. If he really holds out, the fan base will probably turn on him. It's not like he made $800,000 on his first contract. He's got millions in the bank already and he's trying to hold the Jets up for a ton of money that could destroy their cap.
Life will go on for the Jets with or without Revis. I know I was a Jet fan before Revis signed, during his playing days and will continue to root for the Jets after Revis is long gone. Absolutely no doubt we are a better team with Revis, but life goes on and I can't justify paying tens of millions of dollars to spoiled overgrown children to play a game.
Interesting read. I bet the Jets front office feels like sending the Raiders a turd in the post to thank them for their ridiculous Aso contract which seems to be one of the main drivers behind these increasingly irritating contract negotiations.
You read the article, and there is no quoting of Revis. Seems just speculation to me and grandstanding if true. I too am tired of it. Training camp starts soon, and I hope Revis is with the team, but if not, I will root for the players who are there.
I'm not sure of the ins and outs, but this seems about right to me. If he does end up going elsewhere, other than the Ravens, he'll never have as good a season as he would have with us. No doubting his talent.
Gotta love the clauses Tanny is putting in contracts now. DBrick has a clause that states he will not miss a single training camp practice or training camp plays (unless 100% legit) or he forfeits bonus money.
I assume this is all posturing by Revis and his representation at this point. But he is beginning to have fans turn on him. Most of us really don't give a crap if he makes 12mil or 15mil. Just get on the field and play.
The deal will get done, holdout or not. I expect Revis to be a Jet for a long long time. Tanny and Rex know they have a special player here in Revis.
The funniest thing to me is that he had a VERY good rookie deal in the first place... when we gave him that deal everyone around the league was bitching 'cause we gave him way too much money and way too much guaranteed money... and now he's saying the Jets don't take care of players they draft? Come on son! I would understand if he was on a deal like Chris Johnson, but this isn't the case! I care for players that are treated bad by their teams, but in this case the Jets have done nothing wrong in regards to Revis. Isn't Aso's contract up next season? Anyways yeah fuck the Raiders... but that contract is CLEARLY out scale... it's 40% more than the next higher contract given to a CB!
I do, I want him to be rewarded for being a top CB, but not at the expense of the rest of the team. He or his idiot agent need to come out and publicly state that the Aso contract was overblown and they accept that a lower contract is more realistic. Or has already been stated, fans will start to turn.
this. I want to see Revis on the practice field during TC like every other Jets fan..but enough of the bullshit already.
Actually many of us do. I mean they don't really care about the money he makes as long as it doesn't prevent us from bringing in (or keeping) talent on this team. I've said it many times... in an uncapped NFL or with a cap of 200 mill I would even be ok with giving him 20 mill a season.. I don't care. But teams have a tight budjet to operate in the NFL and I don't want my team to blow all the money on one guy (unless it's the QB).
Suppose this gets ugly in Aug., with neither side giving in. Do we let him miss games (hold out) and become a distraction? Or does Tanny try to move him ohmy. If it's the latter, what is Revis worth? I don't even think two 1st rounders is close. Who would give up more than that though? Yes, I know this is premature, but since we're speculating 'n all...
I agree 100%, if he comes great, come out there and perform and be a leader, if not your fucking ass is still stuck here, if he wants to get his 20 mill taken away, fine by us, can that money be used in helping players get resigned? At this point Revis is a great corner, but Tanny will not pay you what your asking for. He's losing the war with the Jets and he's losing support from the fanbase. He's going to end up getting traded to a crappy team that won't use him correctly, then you will get your payday, Revis hope you will be happy then, especially if we win a SB without you. Revis can be replaced, we have Cro and Wilson already if we add another stud CB via draft by trading him for 1st rounders I'm all in for it. This fight is bigger then Revis and his douche bag agent, the previous players under this agent have fought the war and all of them lost, what makes Revis different. I'm sick of his bitching, he's worse then Latrell Sprewell at the end of his career with the Twolves. He could learn a few things from Brick. 2 first rounders, and an impact corner - depending on the team/conference/player I would seriously consider it, but it would have to be done before training camp
