SATURDAY, 8:40am: The Cubs rejected an offer of Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo for Zambrano, tweets SI's Jon Heyman. Zambrano has $17.83MM more remaining on his contract than they do, so I'm assuming the Mets wanted cash in the deal. Heyman says the Cubs did not want to take Castillo.
He made it up. He was being funny by saying that Perez is so pathetic that maybe the Mets would pay his full salary to have him pitch elsewhere. St. Louis is probably the one team that could turn around Perez. I can envision Dave Duncan getting enough out of Perez that St. Louis uses him in the postseason and Perez wins a game.
There's no maybe to any Ollie Perez deal. They would most certainly have to pay the other team if not all of the salary, the vast majority of the salary just to take him off our hands. Any team that takes Perez and, God forbid, Castillo is doing us a HUGE favor. Why any team would want either guy is just crazy to me. I got excited when I saw Rich's post and looked at mlbtr.com to see if it were truth. Please get these two pieces of shit off this roster. PLEASE!!
I was, too. I looked around at several sites and then realized RichMiano was being funny the whole time. The Mets would have to take another bum in return for Perez if the Mets don't want to have to pay almost all of the remaining money due Perez. I don't know if there are any other bums on Perez' level, so the Mets might be stuck with him.
BREAKING NEWS!! Olivier Perez has just been traded to Epcot in return for a couple of park tickets and a dozen mickey mouse ice cream bars. Reports indicate that Oliver will take on a major role in the Mexico section of the theme park making margaritas and burritos.
Dave Duncan is a magician. Turning Jeff Weaver into a key cog in a World Series champion is pretty much the most impressive thing that I've ever seen a pitching coach do.
I am for the Mets trading Jeff Francouer. So what if Chris Carter or Jesus Feliciano would have to play more often?!!? They are lesser fielders by a wide margin, but they are better than Francouer at the plate and in Wilpon's wallet. They should trade Francouer for a relief pitcher on some crap team, even if the RP sucks right now. Look at the Rays. They traded for Chad Qualls. The Mets need to do something like that. Take a chance on a struggling guy and dump Francouer at the same time. It won't help the Mets make the playoffs, but it would help for 2011 at least with money.
Chad Qualls has an ERA of 8.7, Are you fucking serious? The Mets had been trying to do something like that a few days ago, and I bet anyone on here would have been screaming about how it's another nobody bullpen arm. Francoeur is a streaky hitter, and his discipline has been much better since Bay went down. He's probably the strongest fielding RF in the game right now, even if his bat is the definition of streaky
our front office is the biggest joke in baseball... But it starts with OWNERSHIP. The Wilpons should NOT own a NY team when they don't want to spend money to make the team better. Madoff must have got those pricks pretty good because when they obviously have glaring holes, they do NOTHING. If this was steinbrenner's team (RIP), after the two choke jobs, he would have fired everybody, traded the bums who underperformed even if it was for scraps and then signed a shitload of legit all stars. not this team. they stick with the smae losers every year, just replacing 1 loser for another here and there Wilpons need to sell the team now. i hope people stop going to games so they can really feel the burn. Makes you really appreciate owners like WOody Johnson, and even James dolan. Because despite dolan's flaws, which if anything is just being too loyal to people he hires, he is ALWAYS willing to go above and beyond from a financial perspective. money is never an issue, and it shouldn't be if you own a fuckin major NY sports team!!! freakin jew owners
Yes, I am. How are they going to upgrade the offense for 2011? 2B or RF- that's it. Today they can rid themselves of Francouer and his putrid OBP. If they don't make any trades today or in the offseason, then the 2011 outfield would be Bay-Beltran-Pagan. That's not bad. We know Francouer's not going to like being a backup next year, so they might as well move him along at some point.
Madoff got them for around 400 million+ Where are these 'Glaring holes' ? the only real holes i can see are a) a spot or two in the bullpen, b) 2B c) #5 spot in the rotation. If the Mets fill C), then they can move Takahashi back to the pen (where he was a very valuable member), and the only real need is 2B, which only needs a short term solution (Hudson) until Flores is ready. Bay hasn't been good at all this year, but his record suggests it's a down year and not a trend. An outfield of Bay-Beltran-Pagan is very good, especially with Pagan's emergence, should Beltran return to form. (I wouldn't expect that till about mid august, that's about the timeframe it took for Jose Reyes to get back to normal after his injuries.)
Check out Qualls' periferals--they're actually very good. Despite his putrid ERA, he might actually have been the best relief pitcher on the market. And calling Francouer the best defensive RF in the game is laughable. One word: Ichiro.
You simply can't trade Frenchy now. Not with Bay on the DL. Again, I would like to see them move Castillo (I dont hate him but I'd like to see Orlando Hudson take over 2B until Flores is ready)
If Dolan owned the Mets and the Wilpons owned the Knicks both teams would be in better shape. Dolan wants to spend like crazy but is limited by the cap. The Wilpons are the opposite. With no cap, Dolan would eat money when necessary. For instance, Perez would currently be pitching in the Mexican league. I loved Jerry Manuel's response to an Evan Roberts question on Wednesday. First let me note that Manuel has answered every question asked by him on WFAN this year. Well, at least every question I've heard and I've heard the vast majority of them. Roberts asked what Manuel thought of Perez. Roberts said Perez is making 12 million, throwing 87, and pitching out of the bullpen. Manuel was quiet for a few seconds and then sarcastically responded, "Next question!" Why is Perez on the team? Two words- the Wilpons.
I understand wanting to move those two slugs but why on earth would you want to take on another Zambrano after the disaster the 1st one turned out to be?
Ichiro has more range then Frenchy (by trade he's a CF) but his arm isn't as accurate or as powerful. Qualls BABIP (Batting average on Balls in play) is .434. Just sayin'.
Why? Pagan can play right field. Carter and Feliciano can share LF duties till Bay comes back. I don't think Francouer's arm and occasional home run is all that valuable. To me, Francouer's inability to consistently reach base is worse than his throwing arm is good.
Yeah, but I think a better defensive outfield is just better overall for the club. Carter's a really nice bat, solid roleplayer, but I can play the outfield better then he can. Feliciano's OF ability is solid for a 4th outfielder, but him and Carter are both LH, so i wouldn't want a LH/LH platoon.
