I can not recall a year where officiating has been so lopsided and unreasonable. Harrisons fines, Lions games where they got completely fucked, calls for Brady/Manning, jets getting short end of the stick, retarded fines.. It's unbelievable. They should use the replay/challenged for penalties starting next year if these shitbags have too much trouble calling it in real time.
Ahh, if only Suh was a Jet. He was on the radio a few days ago. Speaks very well, soft spoken kind of guy, but he seemed like he was very down to earth.
Looked like a clean hit to me. Perhaps they are just trying to send a message to Suh to calm it down a bit? Didn't he get flagged earlier in the year for roughness?
I don't understand that at all. That's just a tackle. I guess Roge wants to send a message to the perceived-dirty Lions? That's the only thing I can think of. I have a problem with that play being flagged. A big problem. The fact that they reviewed it and found it fine-worthy is inexcusable.
If you want to argue about the fine, that's fine. The penalty for unnecessary roughness was the correct call. Suh went to Cutler's head. He should have just pushed Cutler in the back. Hit the "6". That's all. Nice and simple. No penalty and certainly no fine.
THIS!!!!!! And it's really sickening at this point. Players can't speak out about how ridiculous the calls are AND they get nonsensical fines. Unreal.
I disagree. He planted his right hand, palm out, right at the name plate. It ended up glancing off of Cutler's helmet, but why is this different than a RB running up the gut? You see tackles all the time where the defender hits a ball carrier high and an arm will ride up and hit the runner in the head.
If he doesn't want to be hit while carrying the ball than he needs to slide. There was no way that was an elbow to the back of the head dude.
I cannot tell if you are being sarcastic Cakes. If you are not all I can say is wow becuase I agree with your posts 99% but you are way off here. I was watching it on my 60 inch and I can tell you with 100% certainty that Suh did not touch his head - Flag was utter bullshit and basically gave the Bears the game. The fine is a complete disgrace by the NFL.
This is not a quarterback issue. Nowhere in my post did I make this a quarterback issue. Also, please show me where I wrote it was an elbow to the back of the head.
Take the QB aspect out of the equation. Ball carriers take inadvertent hands and forearms to the helmet all the time when trying to be tackled. What makes this play unnecessary roughness and fine worthy? The sheer force the guy possesses? Intent?
1. I never wrote that the play deserved a fine. 2. Because the money goes to charity, I don't get up in arms about fines. I wrote earlier that if someone wants to argue about a fine, then fine. I don't care enough about them to argue. Would I have fined Suh? Nope. 3. I don't care about intent. You can dig up comments I made about the Eric Smith hit on Anquan Boldin. So many other people: "Smith didn't intend to hit Boldin in the face." Me: "It does not matter what Smith's intentions were. He launched himself like a missile and hit a guy in the face." I don't think Suh intended to hit Cutler in the head. I don't think he intended to draw a penalty and fine. 4. The sheer force that Suh possesses? That is not an issue. 5. I wrote earlier that the penalty was a correct call. Rule 12, Article 8 contains this Note- If in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactics, the covering official(s) should always call unnecessary roughness. Ed Hochuli thought he saw Suh use a forearm to bring down Cutler. Therefore, by rule, he had to throw a flag and penalize Detroit 15 yards. 6. You wrote, "He planted his right hand, palm out, right at the name plate." The problem is that Suh is not allowed to use the palm of his hand(s) on an opponent's head, neck, or face in that situation. Of course, the nameplate is not the head, neck, or face. However, I believe Suh made contact with the back of Cutler's head and remember, I don't care about intent. So that's where I'm coming from. Now, I did not watch the play on a 60-inch TV and I did not see it in super slow-motion. I am not 100% certain that Suh made contact with Cutler's head, but I will believe that he did until it can be proven otherwise.
He did make contact with the helmet on the follow through. I remember reading that note in the rule, but thought it had to do with the helmet to helmet hits. I believe it was part of that packet they sent out to every NFL team before the season. You know, the one with low-grade drawings. It doesn't matter because the rule uses "not be limited to" which leaves a wide chasm of interpretation. I did say the call was understandable. At full speed and depending on what angle he was at, I'm sure it looked like a direct head shot. And I don't really care about the fines, as long as they're doled out with consistency. I just worry that they'll start to nitpick his play. I don't want him changing the way he plays. Same type of play in the ATL/TB game, except Freeman drills Grimes late and clearly out of bounds. Freeman has both forearms/elbows up around the neck area. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81cab802/Grimes-INT I doubt he'll draw a letter/fine from the league.
That note was not specific to helmet to helmet hits. Rather, it was a note about personal fouls in general. The officials are supposed to flag a team for unnecessary roughness if they think they see unnecessary roughness. The play against Jake Delhomme in the preseason was really out there. That was something you'd see in pro wrestling. As for the Cutler play, next time Suh needs to push the runner in a lower spot. Push him on the guy's jersey number. Don't go near the head in that situation and give the officials a reason to throw a flag. Suh seems pretty smart. I would think he can correct these mistakes.
Indeed it was. He's seems like a smart cat and I'm sure he'll use this as motivation to get better. As good as he's been, there are still a lot of things he needs to work on.
