Peyton Manning attacked us mostly down field in the second half of the AFCCG last year. Jay Cutler attacked us mostly down field last week. The Bears were trying to attack the short middle early and didn't have a lot of success, then started attacking down field. That's when they scored 3 TD's in a quarter. Rex did a good job covering up the underneath coverage issues vs. the Bears but then they just went up top and exploited our lack of pass rush. You want to rush 2 against Brady? Good luck because he'll begin launching it down field to someone wide open.
I'm not really sure what Rex's answer would be, but I don't doubt that he'll scheme a defensive gameplan to either stop it, or at the very least, slow it down to make it a close game. Normally, I would say rush 3, and drop more LBs/DBs back into soft zone coverages, but, that's what we seemed to do last game and we still got burnt. Rex is a proud guy, and it's gonna take some real scheming on his part, but I think he'll be up to the challenge.
That's been my thinking as well. With Bowe gone, Cassel won't have his go to WR and will not do as well as he's done all year. Its about getting him into 3rd and longs and taking away Tony Moeaki.
Clearly you need to rush more than 2.... My point, more or less was that Indy and NE like to get the ball out quickly so over hyping the pass rush isn't where we need to get. you need to find a balance where if the ball is NOT out in 3 seconds you're making him uncomfortable, but I would not expend too much energy trying to get there constantly.
we need a pass rush so the qb will force the throw early if a qb like tom brady doesnt think hes going to get hit hes going to stand there and wait for someone to get open. we would have absolutely destroyed the bears if the pass rush was effective
On the other side of that is if we blitz QBs like Brady will find the mismatch. Generating pressure with 3-4 guys would be ideal but we don't have the personnel for that unfortunately. Maybe Pouha can throw Wilson at Brady, I'm sure that isn't a penalty.
I'll say this, if Rex can get this team as far as he did last year or better it will be an outstanding coaching effort.
Right now, I have no confidence that this team can beat ANY of the playoff teams. We would have to beat them by outscoring them and I just don't see it happening. Defensive issues: - No pash rush in the base defense - Tight ends and slot receivers are killing us. - We can't stop the run off the edges. If we play Manning he will pick us apart just like he does to every other team when he is given time to throw. If we play the Chiefs Charles and Jones will run the ball down our throats until we are softened up for Cassel to beat us with the short passing game. If I had to pick, I would rather play the Chiefs due to their playoff inexperiece. I still think we are one and done!! Praying I am wrong
all the jets have to do is start tackling better, and applying more pressure. if that happens, watch out.
Boy I hope you are right. The way Mendenhall and Forte bounced runs to the outside with little or no resistance makes me very scared to see what happpens when they face a back that has some outside speed. I think Charles is averaging something like 7 yards per carry.
Its not like our defense is that bad. We are clearly a better defense than we appeared to be against the bears. Somebody said it after the game, I think it was greene or keller, when our defense is on, they are lights out and nobody can beat them. If Rex gets the defense back to basics and gets them playing their best ball, our defense can show up and play extremely well. Our offense, as shown the last few weeks, can show up and play just as well. If we actually put it all together in the playoffs, we will be untouchable. The question of course, is will we? Because we certainly haven't done it so far this year.
they are quite capable of doing some damage that's for sure. the only thing that frustrates me is that they are still trying to find themselves this late in the season. i'd love to see the D clamp down hard in round one. if that happens, going on a run is a good possibility.
Yes. IF we stop making mistakes. Now that Schittenheimer has discovered the miracle of the short passing game.. we're good to go. Look at Sunday...Holmes' fumble lead to 7 points and Kellers EZ drop cost us 4, the difference in the game. Which is twice that's happened now. Eliminate mistakes, plus Short passing game....we're 3/4 wins better....The only game we really got it handed to us was by NE. To Recap, bogus call against Baltimore gave them 4 in a 1 point game. Missed WR's against greenbay cost us that game in a close one (would have been 6-0, before the 4th down) Miami...Holmes drop EZ..nuf said. Chi...Holmes Fumble (7 for Chi)....Keller Drop in EZ (=4 for Chi) Now...to be fair we still gave up a shitload of points against Chicago, But Mia,Baltimore and GB ....not so much. Injuries also play into that, but the defense has shown the ability to hold Playoff teams to low scores. And with the Sort passing game evolving (FINALLY) we should be getting to the 24 pt plus plateau.
Better prepared? Have you lost your mind? Maybe if we had last years D to go along with this years O.
I think experience wise we are without a doubt. Last year we asked the offense not to lose us games, now they can very well go out and win us games. The D had a bad game against Chicago, but prior to that we had a good two weeks. Holding Pittsburgh to 17, and Miami to 10 and barely a hundred yards of offense. Rex Ryan will get it right. After the NE debacle most Jet fans were terrified that a blueprint was provided. Well we had Miami and Pittsburgh after that game and did well. Chicago we uncharacteristically gave up big plays, and I put a lot of that on not having Eric Smith calling the coverages. I'm easily the most optimistic Jet fan but I truly believe this team will have their shit together on all 3 phases come Wild Card weekend.
OK - are you going to go point out a few plays the other teams could have made in our close wins? This is a silly thing to do. Didn't we have much better safety play at this point last season? Didn't we have a much better pass rush at this point last season? Didn't we have a better nickel back at this point last season? Didn't we have a more dominant rushing attack last season? The only thing this team is better at is passing the ball. So I'd say we have a better shot at winning shoot outs, but playoff football is often won with defense and a strong running attack - both of which we were better at last season. I just don't see how this team is better equipped to go on a playoff run. Tell me what we do so much better and I'll tell you 3 things we do worse.
