I think them loving Powell so much shows they are serious about using LT primarily as a receiver.. I would not be surprised to see Greene lead the team in carries obviously, with Powell second most.
Rex and Schotty just need to spread out LT's carries consistently. LT was getting 2/3 of the carries during the first half of the season and got worn out. Greene can't just come up strong during the second half and have a lousy first half. Consistency is the key!
He's our 3rd down back, it's pretty much already written in stone. Shonn will be our feature back, with a splash of McKnight to mix it up. Powell will have to earn his touches if any, which is good for both him and McKnight.
Love the pick. Think about our RB depth if we didn't add another back this year. It would be LT, Greene & McKnight. If Greene got hurt in week 12, then you're looking at LT & McKnight going into December/January and in the playoffs? Maybe for a Colts team that's acceptable. But considering our ground n' pound philosophy, we needed another back. I'm not surprised that we added a RB (I had no idea who we would get) but this is the right move for us.
If not this upcoming season, surely the next I feel McKnight will be fighting for his job barring injury to Bilal or fumblitis. Joe struggled all the way through the season with the playbook, agression and holding the football. Also Bilal looks to have a bigger upside than Joe. As it stands I like the pick to bolster Joe to improve his trade stock.
Tahts part of it, but it also point to shonn going donw against he colts in the 2009 AFC championship game. Powell is a powerful back, not to greene's extent, but much more so than McKnight or LT. This gives us quality depth at RB. Not jsut a body but hopefully someoen who can pick up the slack in a pinch if needed while playing a part time role this season. Our front office is not only preaching run first, but backing it up this draft pick.
Powell was a need. Our backfield at the being of the 2010 season was loaded, because Joe McKnight and John Connor we outright not ready. T-Rich was needed for Terminator's development. Chauncey Washington and Danny Woodhead were needed in case McKnight didn't develop and we had an injury. Lucky for us it all worked out except a Super Bowl appearance. Now Powell is our runningback insurance and I expect they might add another RB for the practice squad if they can afford it. RB is a big wear and tear position, so Tannenbaum has a revolving door philosophy, which in my opinion sucks, because I like RBs and would like to be rooting for the same guy 3-4 years down the road, but it is a solid finacial philosophy which allows us to spend more in other areas where longevity is expected. As for where Powell fits in, I am guessing he is middle ground ball carrier. Not a scat and not a power runner, but useful on all four downs. I just hope he can catch. I think I read he is above average there.
