Link: More Than Just a Deep Threat By Bassett on Jun 05, 2011, 8:18 am Writes his Sunday wrap-up post and mentions a thought about Braylon versus Randy. HOME-RUN THREAT: Ryan likes to call Randy Moss the best vertical receiver in the game. Well, Ryan has a pretty fair deep threat on his own team — Braylon Edwards. According to a study by ProFootballFocus.com, Edwards produced 401 receiving yards on deep passes (10th in the league) and four touchdowns (tied-ninth). He also was targeted 33 times (tie-seventh). A deep pass is defined as a throw of at least 20 yards. I think Rex Ryan loves what Braylon is about, as evidenced by the fact that he was on the field so much in 2010. I think the problem is that Braylon is going to incur a premium to re-sign him, while Moss could be had for a lot less. Beyond Braylon’s deep threat ability, the former Cleveland WR is a really good blocking receiver and his skill there has allowed the Jets to run for some long gains over the course of his almost two years with the Jets. Edwards has been a vital part on some long Brad Smith option plays, or runs that make it to the second level. The problem of course, is that beyond Edwards excellent deep threat ability, Randy Moss is a guy who repeatedly jakes it on running plays, even running plays to his side. His unwillingness to get involved, more or less makes it one less person for the Jets on the field in those instances.
u know the offseason is slow when someone has to write a piece reminding people that in 2011 Edwards>Moss
Edwards must be resigned so Sanchez can continue to grow with his recieving corps. Continuity is king.
But he could.... Teach him how to dougie Teach him, teach him how to dougie Teach him how to dougie Teach him, teach him how to dougie
Yeah for real fuck Randy Moss. I'd rather keep our young receivers. If we are going to go old might as well grab TO instead of Moss.
I can't understand even entertaining the thought of not bringing back Edwards. I'm still of the mind that he's the most important WR on the Jets. I understand the love for "Tone Time" but it only lasts 15 minutes. For the other 45 the solid receiver play is coming from Braylon. I'd like to have Holmes back, but without a doubt I want Edwards back. Whoever the other starting receiver is from the group of possibilities is fine with me (honestly, I'd prefer Ochocinco to Moss and Holmes over them) but Edwards is far too valuable to our offense not just the passing game.
Jets drafted Kerley who's skill set is similar to Holmes. Braylon's willing to take a discount and is a factor in the running success of the team. If it comes down to one or the other, Braylon will be first to sign, especially considering his willingness to give a discount. What's good is that they both have contractual baggage. Holmes is one strike away from an extended suspension while Braylon's got the DWI/court over his head. It's possible Tanny can sign them both at the expense of Cromartie. Rex is probably against cutting Cro though.
I'm not willing to risk hoping a draftee will come in and help us win a title this year. That window is getting tighter every passing day without ripping out some plumbing and rebuilding a bit. I'm actually more concerned with Edwards' DWI than Holmes' risk. It almost seems as though the judge from his Cleveland troubles is waiting for a punishment in the NY case before dropping a hammer. Still I prefer Braylon on the field. I wouldn't cut Cromartie. The only way I don't want him back is if we can bring in Asomugha, and that doesn't solve any money problems at all. I actually think the two biggest discounts will come from Edwards and Cromartie. I'm just not convinced Wilson is ready or will be.
I personnally feel Edwards will be resigned and we will let Holmes go. Holmes is tenured at a 1st & 3rd and will expect top dollar which we can't afford. I also look for us to sign a veteran receiver like Moss, Burress or maybe Owens. (I would pass on all three.) My pick to replace Holmes would be a Danny Amendola or Steve Breaston, both are same type of player and cost a whole lot less. An option I do like if we don't keep Edwards which would be a mistake, could be Mike Sims-Walker. Not as tall but similar at a cheaper price.
The HR vs Indy 2 years ago in the playoffs. vs Detroit & Miama last year... he can blaze when he needs to. That said, he is an excellent blocker but last year I remember him getting hit w/ quite a few penalties during blocking assignments... He needs to clean that shit up.
BURRESS > MOSS p.s. i really hope it doesn't come to that. Mr. Dougie + Tone Time is up there with the best combos in the league. p.p.s. Bring back B. Smith
