Just to be clear, who would you want Landry to replace? Because in my opinion he's no FS... he would be an upgrade over Leonhard at SS but I can't see Rex let him go. I also think we have other priorities than bringing in 5 mill a season safeties...
If we lost Cromartie and let Wilson step up as the #2 then signing Landry (instead of another #2 corner) is a solid way to sure up the secondary. Then grab another #3 corner (think one of the Ravens cheaper FA corners) Hell I think our secondary would be BETTER that way than instead of with Cro @ #2 and Eric Smith at safety. That said you put Leonhard @ FS and Landry @ SS. SS should be larger and stronger anyway, and FS are generally smaller and quicker. I mean lets be honest Leonhard doesnt exactly match up that well vs giant powerful tight ends, and when you have the Patriots TE heavy offense in your division thats pretty important.
It's simple: move Jimmy Leonhard to free safety and Dawan Landry plays strong safety. Once this team figures out its wideout situation, then safety is probably the next need in line. As of right now, Brodney Pool, James Ihedigbo, and Eric Smith aren't under contract. That leaves this team with Emanuel Cook and Jimmy Leonhard, who's coming off a serious injury. Safety is a very, very big need. I'd love to see the Jets bring back Eric Smith and James Ihedigbo (for special teams purposes) and sign Dawan Landry to a reasonable deal.
I just read this post. ...couldn't agree more. Josh Wilson and Fabian Washington are ex-Raven corners that the Jets should take a look at.
What do you guys think about acquiring Tom Zbikowksi for a third rounder instead of going after Dawan Landry? They're both restricted FAs with the Ravens. Zibby's emergence last season may also put us in a good situation to land Landry. If Baltimore's staff feels that Zbikowski can step up, then they may give Landry away without a fight.
Personally, I'd rather not give up the 3rd round pick. It's more likely we go after Landry. I seem to recall Rex calling Dawan one of his favorite players he coached in Balt.
After throwing away a 2nd rounder on Cromartie id really feel kinda uneasy giving up a 3rd rounder on a player thats not exactly proven. As a matter of fact giving up a 3rd rounder for Zbikowksi would make me pretty upset. A 3rd rounder for a safety with 17 tackles and no turnovers last season would really leave me scratching my head. And its not like he had done much in the past before that Esp being short a 3rd rounder next year kinda stops us from being able to move around in the draft at all next year, and OLB is still going to be a whopping need as well as some OL depth
To me, this argument is very similar to the one that was used against Miles Austin when the Jets were thinking about acquiring him a couple years ago. Austin only had 13 catches in 2008, so almost everyone on TGG wrote him off because of his limited stats. Look how that turned out. Zbikowski only played in 8 games last season because of a heel injury. That's why his stats were low. ...and as far as the other seasons go, not too many players in this league would start over Ed Reed. You can't expect him to put up huge numbers playing behind one of the game's best defenders. As a key reserve, he's done a heck of a job in limited time. He's also a hell of a punt returner. You don't draft backup offensive linemen in the third round. That'd be a wasted pick.
Zbikowski did a great job when healthy and he was one of the prospects I was hoping the Jets would at least take a look at in 2008. Still I'd rather see us go after Dawan Landry and let Lowery get a shot at FS.
I guess Jimmy Leonhard could platoon at free safety with Dwight Swipe. It's that or we cut him and save about three million.
No but a 3rd round pick lets you move up to get the guy you want. If it wasnt for a 3rd round pick the Jets never would of been able to trade up to get Harris. Instead who knows who we would have instead. And as for Miles Austin we would of had to give up a 2009 2nd round draft pick to sign him, which we used to trade up to draft Mark Sanchez. Sure we missed out on an excellent WR, but then again it sure as shit beats having Kellen Clemens as the face of this franchise
...so do fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh round picks... You're missing the point. If the Jets acquire Tom Zbikowski and the move works out, we'll be set at the position for years. It fills a need that we won't have to spend a draft pick on later in the decade. At the time, no one knew how the 2009 draft would pan out. They just used the limited production excuse against Miles Austin.
I think we go all out for All-Pro Nnamdi Asomugha, I know he's expensive to say the least however I cant imagine what a qb would think going into a game vs revis, Asomugha, wilson, and lowry. I hate to say this but let Edwards go uggh and sign Plax cheap, and let cro go (that was easier said)
