ESPN just unveiled their new "Total QBR" rating system that they claim to be a better representation of a QB and how well they preform in a game or a season In this system a 20 yd TD pass into the endzone with 1:30 left in the 4th with your team down 6 contributes more the the Total QBR than a 5 yd screen pass at mid field that goes for a TD with 6:30 left in the 3rd in a game where youre up by 21 points Both plays went for TD's but one play was more clutch and important because of the games situation so it was worth more. ESPN's rating system is from 0-100 100-75 is a MVP type season 65-75 is a Probowl worthy QB 50 is average 35 or lower is below average ESPN rewatched every game of the last 3 years and ranked the performances of each QB here is the top 10 and where Mark Sanchez's first 2 NFL seasons fall on the list 1 2009 Peyton Manning IND 82.3 2 2008 Peyton Manning IND 79.7 3 2009 Drew Brees NO 77.2 4 2010 Tom Brady NE 76.0 5 2008 Matt Ryan ATL 72.6 6 2008 Chad Pennington MIA 72.3 7 2009 Philip Rivers SD 71.8 8 2008 Jay Cutler DEN 71.3 9 2009 Matt Schaub HOU 71.0 10 2009 Aaron Rodgers GB 69.7 62 2010 Mark Sanchez NYJ 47.4 89 2009 Mark Sanchez NYJ 30.9 He improved by alot last year going from a below average to a average QB TQBR explaination: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6833215/explaining-statistics-total-quarterback-rating top 100 TQBR from 2008-2010: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6834507/nfl-peyton-manning-top-two-qbr-seasons What do you guys think of the new system and do you guys think its a fair representation of Mark Sanchez's first 2 years?
Sanchez was better last year than Roethlisburger was during his 2008 Super Bowl winning season for whatever it means.
Well, let's be honest most of us realistic Jets fans on here know that Mark made big strides last year and only the SOJF will argue that he didn't make any progress. I expect Mark to show more improvement this year and for him to be hitting his open reads instead of forcing balls to receivers just to make them happy (which interestingly might be why we didn't have much interest in re-signing Braylon) and when that happens our offense is going to be beastly.
Interesting. Too early for me to say if I like it or not. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that of the top 10 list, for the respective season there was only 1 super bowl winner.
Meh, personally. Not a big fan of most football stats. They don't apply to the game the same way that baseball stats tend to. They can be interesting, but in the end don't mean much on Sundays. Chad Pennington 2008 ranked 8 in the list, and Aaron Rodgers last year (SB win) came in at 19? W's are the key stat in football. Football games aren't won on paper.
Rodgers had a good, but not great regular season... Add in the injuries they dealt with and its not a big shocker to see rodgers not ranked well. I do not think the postseason is counted in this. Because otherwise Sanchez and Rodgers would both be higher. they played their best ball when it mattered most.
Anyone able to find total quarterback rating on a game by game basis ? Most significantly for playoff games ? Im incredibly curious what Sanchezs post season #s look like
I was wondering the same thing lets hope ESPN does this because i dont know where to begin to calculate this
They didn't do post season games. You probably need to wait until this coming post season to see playoff games calculated.
It was the year that he got the starting job back and jumped on the Chris Johnson 2K wagon, went 8-2 as a starter.
I watched the whole special and I think they said Rodgers 2010/2011 SB run had him at a 89 QBR in the playoffs. Rodgers was ridiculous on that SB run.
2010 Aaron Rodgers is 16th. This makes this stupid rating worthless. His game against the Jets last year was one of the smartest games I've ever seen a QB play, and a I guarantee that game hurt his numbers when it shouldn't have done anything negative to it.
