@BradwaySux Offensive production schemes broke down cause there was no OTA/Offseason. Changing protection at the OLine takes time cause it coincides with QB cadence and QB's knowledge of the scheme, calls, changing names of protections etc, amnd don't forget getting the RBs up to speed as well. If Turner didn't get injured we would not have had a problem when Mangold went down. We probably would have won Oakland, possibly the Pats game, and the Balt game could have been much closer. I guess Tanny 's magic 8-ball was off in the off season about not foreseeing the Center's backup injury and the starting center's injury as well? Cmon - that's a lot to ask any GM to cover. How many future assets were traded away? A 2nd for Cro? He's the 2nd or 3rd best CB in the league. Revis plays for the Jets so he makes Wilson and Cro look like pop-warner players. But you can't deny we have awesome depth at the CB position. Cro is still a top tier CB and Wilson has had a ridiculous turn around from last year. There isn't a team in this league that has a b/u player that can match the starters at every position. Sometimes its David Harris backing up Vilma, and sometimes its Colin Baxter backing up Nick Mangold. You can't cover every position with a Turner or Hunter. (Mangold & Woody)
Not to be a Johnny One Note, but it was not suddenly. First it was the pick on VD looked bad last year, and he was kept on the roster. Then Turner went down and was not properly replaced. Then Mangold went down.
Totally disagree here. When Turner went down, as the primary backup for the middle three positions on the OL, and I believe in a pinch he could play T as well?, the Jets were on notice they had NO real backup for the OL. Meaning VD was not useable in any respect as a backup. It was not just if Mangold went down, but if any of them did, with Turner out, who would be put in there? You're not saying it was not "foreseeable" that a backup might be neceesary at some point during the season? Or that VD was an adequate backup? When Turner got hurt, there was still time to look around and get someone suitable, even if it had to be a trade or something. I wouldn't claim here that no effort was made, but I also never heard of any real effort going on, and certainly no one adequate was brought in.
2007 - 1st, 2nd, 5th for Darrelle Revis. The 2nd and the 5th would be 26 right now and in their prime. 2nd, 3rd, 6th for David Harris. The 3rd and the 6th would be 26 right now in their prime. Even if you think that the trades were absolutely spot on and that the draft picks were 50/50 at best that is still two good 26 year olds missing from the 2011 roster. 2008 - 2nd, 4th for Dustin Keller. 3rd, 5th for Kris Jenkins. 2009 3rd for Brett Favre. 2009 1st, 2nd, 3 roleplayers for Mark Sanchez. 3rd, 5th for Braylon Edwards. 2010 5th for Lito Sheppard. My point is that the depth the Jets don't have right now is not an accident. The fact that there were no primary candidates to replace people like Damien Woody and Alan Faneca is not due to people not working out, it's due to the Jets making the conscious decision to forsake quality picks in the early to middle rounds of the draft in favor of trading up for one guy or in the case of Braylon Edwards and Kris Jenkins to trade for one guy. The fact that there's nobody in line to replace Bart Scott and Brandon Moore and Eric Smith is because the Jets made the decision to put all their assets on the field and have very little long-term growth potential for the team. This hasn't ever worked anywhere for more than a few seasons. No great teams have been built this way either, just a few good ones like the early to mid 70's Redskins and the late 90's Raiders. You just don't get dynasties coming out of this type of cannibalism and very few if any titles either.
Woody's replacement got drafted - Ducasse. He's gone from terrible to below average. He gets in each game and does his job for 4 or 5 snaps. But clearly the Jets missed on him unless he turns it around in an Aaron Maybin manner. Slauson is playing better this year than last because he's healthy. His lateral movement is better than last season. He had a great game last week. Hunter was a miss, but after the January he had last season the FO thought he turned the corner. The depth is top heavy. Some positions have plenty, some have none. That's why they do need another 06 draft to bring in 10 picks and have 6 work out.
I generally respect ur opinion, but I totally disagree here. This Jets team is built to win long term, not short term. We have a great core or players on the offense, AND defense. Sure, we have some holes, but which team doesn't? Yeah we need a safety in 2012 and couple of LBs the following year, but thats normal. Mo seems like the real deal, and hopefully Ellis works out well going forward. The DL will (hopefully) have two starters in their 2nd years in the NFL. Our CBs will be the best int he NFL in 2012. Revis, Cromartie, and a much improved Kyle Wilson in 2012 would probably be the best trio in the NFL. As for our offense, we need help at OL and WR. Thats it. We already have D'Brick and Mangold taking up the two most important positions on the OL, and we have a young Slauson who has played really well IMO. We need to upgrade the right side of the line this coming off season. One position can be filled via FA while Moore can still give us one more good year. As for the WR position, we have Holmes locked up long term. We have Kerley who seems to be a decent pickup for a 7th rounder and can play the slot. 2nd WR shouldn't be too hard to find. Even Braylon can fix that issue, although I doubt he comes here. TE position is fine, just need a blocking TE via FA this year. Then u have Sanchez. Its obvious, drafting Sanchez was a plan for future, not mortgaging the future. We hardly gave up anything of great value for him. This team is built for years, while we try to win now. I love that about this team. Im thankful we have Tanny as our GM. U can pile up on the draft picks, but what use are they when u rarely hit?
Mike has slipped up in a few spots (the OL depth being the most obvious) but i think he has done a fine job of building this team. It is incredibly difficult to build a winning team without a top tier QB and the fact we have been able to do that is a testement to the rest of the squaad that has been assembled.
The offense is 26th in the league, they cannot expect nor will they ever get to the superbowl with that. Everybody can argue for eternity but it is either Schitty or Sanchez who are at fault, take your pick, but I can see either or both gone and maybe even before 2013.
It isnt that crazy given Tanny's past. Sanchez will be less of a cap hit next season.... If Peyton is available and the Jets blow the playoffs it isnt crazy to think Peyton will be here with Moore as OC. Or at least that the front office will try to pull that off. Tanny is crazy enough to do it.
I agree with the general sentiment here. Tannenbaum has doubled down repeatedly over the last 3+ seasons to try to get the Jets to a Super Bowl. I think he'd pull the trigger on Manning if Manning agreed to come here. I even think he'd push Manning really hard to come here, a la the Brett Favre arm twisting. I don't think Manning would put us any closer to a Super Bowl than Favre did though. The management style that Tannenbaum is showing is flashy and exciting and ultimately unproductive in terms of championships. If it worked there would have been more teams successfully adding vets to fill holes at key positions and then winning it all. Instead the key players on championship teams are all players that were developed by those teams over a period of time. The last franchise to win with imports was the St Louis Rams in 1999 with Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk playing the biggest roles in the championship. Both of those guys were still in prime years when the Rams got them. We'd be getting 36 year old Peyton Manning, not the 28 year old version that had trouble winning it all anyway.
Keep in mind that when we made the Favre move 2 things played into it: A) the durability issues w/ Chad B) the sales of PSLs I don't think Mike Tannenbaum would be foolish to get rid of a promosiing young QB for an old, nbroken down one who, at his peak, has been a great player but also a great choker.
I think he'd go for Manning in the scenario where he just couldn't get rid of Schotty for whatever reason and the Jets made the determination that Schotty and Sanchez weren't working out together for whatever reason. I don't really think Manning would agree to come to NY though. I think he's going to want to go to Tennessee and he'll settle for Arizona when the Polians start laughing at the idea that they'd let him go in the AFC, let alone the AFC South.
As asinine a move as the Favre move was this would be a million times worse b/c we'd have to give up more picks, more money, the QB is broken down AND we have a good, durable, YOUNG QB we have nearly won it all with.
This is the Quarterback position. They invested in Sanchez. If there is any set back with Manning's neck, his career is over. This hypothetical situation is hysterically retarded.
My major grouse with Tannenbaum is that he presided over one OL disaster in 2007 and clearly didn't learn from it. In 2010 he went with Ducasse and Slauson competing for LG without *knowing* he had an answer, merely hoping, same as he did in 2007 with Adrian Jones. This year at least his assessment of Hunter was based on seeing him play pretty well in extended action late in 2010, so it's a gamble again, but less of a shot in the dark. I'd rather he didn't trust to hope with such a vital area of the team. (Really with any area of the team.)
In the playoffs, you face the NFL's best defenses, you're not gonna look like a superstar QB every time out against the Ravens, Steelers, and Pats of old. I'd hardly call the guy a choker. For his career in 19 playoff games: 63.1% Passing 5389 Yards 29 TDs 19 INTs 88.4 rating Sanchez gets a lot of credit for winning 4 road playoff games, as he should, but it was a team effort. He did not eclipse the 200 yard passing mark in any of the games. I know you'll argue Brady is better until you're blue in the face, but look what the Pats did without Brady... and what the Colts have done without Manning. He is their best player AND best coach.
It's not quite so retarded for 2013. Sanchez gets another year to prove he is a viable veteran quarterback we can with a championship with, not despite. If the Colts draft Luck, and he sits behind a healthy successful Peyton Manning comeback season, the logic for both teams is there. Manning is a LOT of money on their books when they need to be grooming their elite prospect. These are of course all if's. I'm rooting 100% for Sanchez's continued success. If it doesn't happen, this might look like an attractive Plan B.
The 2010 transition didn't bother me as much. Faneca was slowing down and ended up only spending another year in the league. Callahan had a rapport with Slauson. The miss on Ducasse bothers me the most because now we need a serious overhaul and with the need to go get a safety in FA we can't afford to miss again if we go the draft strategy on the O-Line. That player will have a steep learning curve if we hope to maintain fluidity with the line.
Luck doesn't want to sit and the strong whiff coming out of his father at this point is that whoever winds up with Luck has their QB for 2011. That's where the Archie and Oliver say no to Peyton and Andrew meme came from. They've backed off of that for the moment but only because Polian told Peyton that tying the Colt's hands right now was not the way to get what Peyton wanted next spring.
