Let me first start off by saying, I love Shonn Greene, he is a great hard nosed runner that does his best on tired D's. IMO, this team uses his abilities wrong and chance to be a more effective RB. This year putting the full load on Greene we were ranked 21st in rushing, and yes I know LT hasnt been involved much but that was basically the plan from the get-go. In my eyes the only way we can get back to an offensive system that is more than just effective is to sign a RB that can complement all elements of this Offense. Having a RB that can catch passes and run effectively while we bring in Greene in the late 3rd or early 4th and beat up on tired D's. Sanchez needs those RBs that can be his safety valve in the passing game when no one is open down the field. This alone would make this D dynamic and I haven't even brought up improving at WR #2. My option to fill this role: Matt Forte- Yeah you all saw it coming but This kid is EXACTLY what this Jet team needs, a dynamic back that can add a whole new element to our offense and help our QB look great. He is a talented runner and superb receiver, since his injury with the Bears looks a bit iffy the Bears might balk and offering a bunch of money, which opens the doors for the Jets to offer a manageable but healthy contract. Just think about what a combination of Greene and Forte could do for this offense? Takes pressure off Sanchez, opens up the play action, and gives us the ability to throw the ball deep once again. If we are going to make a sneaky out of the blue move this off season, I say we look long and hard at acquiring a RB.
Can you say "salary cap" He won't come here cheaply. I don't think any team is going to invest long term on a RB coming off a knee injury. I'm sure the Vikings are sweating bullets, considering what happened to Peterson. I agree that Shonn Greene is probably better off as a complimentary piece. The Jets need to find another vet like Tomlinson or Thomas Jones who will share carries and provide good production.
The Jets would have to sacrifice an element that theyd want to improve on in D like the safety spot or a FA RT, yes that would suck but having a element of our team be one of the best in the league next to a great D would be more than just a playoff team, IMO.
We should have taken a shot at Steven Jackson when we had the chance several years ago or perhaps Marshawn Lynch. Either of those guys paired with Greene would have been lethal. I do agree that Greene needs a partner to be effective and LT isn't that RB. Instead of a straight ahead guy, we need a power back that can change direction quicker than Shonne. Since our RB's typically line up 5+ yds behind the LOS, Greene is at a disadvantage every running play.
I disagree. I think Greene has been one of the pleasant surprises of the year and has showed he can be the fulltime back. Remember, we didn't go to our ground and pound philosophy until week 6 (before this we were using zone blocking and passing the ball WAYYY too much). Once we did these were his yds/carry per game. 4.0 3.5 5.6 4.0 4.7 3.3 (only had 3 carries before getting hurt) 6.0 4.0 5.4 4.1 4.1 Has 999 yds (4.2 avg) for the season despite a subpar offensive line
Mike tolbert is exactly what they need. A great role player who can play on 3rd down and give Green a breather without losing the hard nose running style the Jets want. Also he's a great receiver, blocker, and goal line back (areas I feel Green struggles in). Most of all he can be picked up and still keep the Jets under the cap. I think he'd get a contract similar to Sproles something like 3 years 13 million
I wasn't crazy about Greene early on, but in the 2nd half of the season, he's been the one thing that's been consistently good with the offense. However, Dopey never likes to give him the ball even if he's shredding the opposing D apart.
Agreed, maybe he hasn't been as explosive because of that rib injury, I forgot he bruised his ribs up a couple weeks ago. I really don't know what goes through that dipshit shottys mind when he throws the ball 68 times in a game when Greene was running pretty hard, I REALLY want to hear his presser this week.
In today's NFL, you don't need a top 5, or even top 10 rushing game to win. The old philosophy of running the football first to establish the pass is out the window. It is now the other way around. How effective would Greene be if he wasn't facing 9 defenders in the box at the start of every game? Jets don't need to go out and find a RB, what they need to do is improve their passing game to open up the run game.
Yeah you dont need a top 5 rushing game to win... if you have an Elite QB. We all know Sanchez isnt Elite, and we shouldnt expect him to be yet. But with a strong run game once again, things change and Im sure Sanchez's play will be up to par of what every Jets fan wants it to be around A guy like Forte makes this offense scary. No team is scared if the Jets offense right now, but with a game changer and play maker, im sure that changes. Only thing that would be bad, is that signing a safety which is a huge need takes the back burner once again.
I don't care if you have Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Earl Campbell or Forte as a RB. Those guys will not do anything with 9 guys in the box. Fix the passing game and the Jets running game improves dramatically. Greene is a decent RB, that should not be a priority for the Jets.
We have 3 above average backs that are not being utilized properly now. If LT walks, bringing in a guy like Tolbert would be amazing, but do you really think Schotty would even know how to use him? I understand where the OP is going, but I truly believe the RB talent is already on the team.
Greene, McKnight, Connor and Powell with a year under his belt solid group of running backs pass rusher, right tackle, safety, second tight end who can block and also catch all things to be dealt with with more urgency than running backs
