I don't think the Jets really thought of Brunell as likely to get any real playing time. He was more a player coach than a real backup Qb. I didn't like the situation going into last season, and I like it even less now. Orton is much better than Brunell.
I don't want McDaniels or to a lesser extent Orton, but I was thinking the same thing. If MCDaniels comes, it might be worthwhile to bring in Orton. Lloyd has also indicated he's going to try to follow McDaniels.
Of course I did. The point is that while I do agree with him, he revealed things that should've been kept in-house. And he might be in trouble for it.
what's the point in signing a vertan qb to push sanchez while pretty much guaranteeing sanchez is our starter next year. that being said.. campbell and orton are the only ones worth discussing. i'm not a fan of either but meh. i wouldn't mind seeing them on the team next year either.
I actually think Kyle Orton is one of the more underrated/under-appreciated QBs in the league. He's not gonna put the team on his back but the guy is solid.
In some ways, for Sanchez to reach his true potential, he needs to overcome a QB controversy. Orton would be a good guy to push him to his limit, or replace him without missing a step
how much money does everyone expect orton to take to come and fight it out with sanchez? i mean in all honesty what the hell would he be thinking to come to new york?
I totally agree. Orton has put up some very good #s in the past and is a guy who could step in and still be relied upon to take the team in a positive direction. It's like having 2 starting caliber NFL QBs on your roster.
I would have been happier if the thread had the words "back-up" removed from the title. It is clear that Sanchez is on thin ice - if i was a back-up qb hoping to get a starting gig with a decent team then the Jets would certainly look an attractive option.
I think it entirely depends on whether he is told he will be allowed to compete for the starting job in a fair contest, or not. Put yourself in his shoes - if you think you will be given a fair shot, and you are Kyle Orton, why wouldn't you take that chance? On the merits, he ends up the starter in that scenario. Of course if he thinks he's just supposed to come to NY, be the backup and wait for Sanchez to crap the bed even worse or get hurt, he doesn't take that deal 100 chances out of 100. It's up to the FO and Ryan to decide which way they want to go, and imo it will be one of if not the biggest indications of what they are, and are not, thinking this off season. Putting Orton himself aside, if the Jets essentially do nothing that amounts to pressuring Sanchez this off season, and in effect say his performance this past season was enough to guarantee him the starting position next year, well, that will certainly tell you something. And it ain't good.
The reason I mention Orton, as compared to someone like McNabb, should be obvious. Orton still has at least a few years left in him. McNabb? I doubt he has any years left in him. He wouldn't really be much different than Brunell's situation
I think there are going to be more attractive options for guys like Campbell and Orton. Shaun Hill seems like the best combination of talent level and likeliness.
We had a veteran back-up whose skills have eroded to the point where Rex couldn't seriously consider putting him in a game when Sanchez struggled. I understand the reasoning behind keeping a guy like him on the roster, it took a lot of pressure off Sanchez, but it's clear we need a viable second option now. Thing is, Sanchez is an unknown quantity. He's a high ceiling guy the team has invested a lot of time and effort into developing, but we don't really know what we're going to get from him next season. Maybe he makes the positive jump we've all been waiting for, maybe he remains the same inconsistent guy we've seen the last three years...or maybe he collapses under the mounting pressure fans, teammates, and the media are putting on him. If either of the latter two scenarios play out, it would be nice to have a veteran back-up on the roster we can depend on to deliver a certain level of play. I think adding that sort of guy makes a heck of a lot more sense than going into the season expecting an immobile, weak armed, 7th round pick, who hasn't played a down of real football in the NFL, to step up and be a dependable number two QB.
