Pretty much what I was thinking. This is the first time he's got a chance to cash in. Considering how quickly players can break down, I'm sure his agent is also telling him this can realistically also be his last chance to cash in also.
... and crazy thought for the day, anyone know what the franchise tag would be for a defensive tackle? I'm assuming its one of the lower ones because they tend to not get huge deals.
Ryan Pickett from the Packers was franchised last season. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/85290037.html "Ryan Pickett made $2.975 million last season, but will get $7.003 million with the Packers' franchise tag"
How about not having the cap space to sign him, especially if the Jets sign a S and/or RT? How about they drafted Kendric Ellis to become the starter and also have MTV, and Pouha is solid vs the run. Why would they sign Solai? Yes, he's good, but Ellis is the guy they drafted to replace Pouha and he has the potential to be a lot better player than Solai.
Of all people, Aubrayo Franklin? If Jets do get him, Jets are making public announcement "We are going 4-3 this year." Not a fucking chance in hell. Franklin as NT will completely disappear in the trenches.
The issue is to this point, Ellis is mostly potential and not a proven player like Solai. That said, I would rather keep Pouha than Solai and give Ellis anotehr year or two in a rotation before handing him the job. NT is the player that makes everything around and behind him work in the 34. Having a skilled, expeinced guy like pouha around is key to the defense being successful.
Also, thanks to those answered about the tag issue. Its more than I would like to spend for sure. Hopefully we come to a reasonable extension with the big guy and soon.
No way Pouha goes anywhere unless he's offered insane money. He will probably be the Jets #1 signing priority. Absolute rock on defense and critical leadership on this team. Pretty much impossible to replace.
